Shouzou Kaga (Fire Emblem creator) developing doujin game with SRPG Studio

Why you no kickstarter? D:

Doujin only means fan based work. There are doujin games of all kind and obviously doujin manga, but they can be anything from pornographic to non pornogaphic.

The term doujin to refer to sexually explicit manga isnt a wrong term, really, but its more than just that

The shocking thing is, the majority of doujin work is SFW in nature. It's just, they're obviously will never make it to the english side of the internet.

Seriously, GAF, Shouzou Kaga is coming back to actually making games and the thread is two pages long. I am disappointed.

I am also hyped as hell. Please be good.

I've never actually heard of Shouzou Kaga, but if he made Fire Emblem what it is he has my attention. I'll have to remember his name. Hopefully his project makes it completion, and eventually to the West. He's established a wonderful franchise with Fire Emblem, and I'm sure he has cool ideas to share.

And as to SRPG Studio, I really hope that makes it to Steam some day. Sounds like a really cool product. With RPG Maker-like asset support, it would be a lot of fun to fiddle with (at my skill level) or make some cool projects (for the pros).

The game maps all look really bad art wise, but the character portraits look leagues above whatever the shit the new FE games are doing.

This game is going to be better than Fates. :p

Probably won't be out for a long time judging by the article. I can't wait.

Looks like Fire Emblem. I'm in, just curious how it will make itself different than Fire Emblem.

Honestly I'd just be down for a Fire Emblem-style game on PC. There aren't enough SRPGs on PC even though they're the perfect platform for them.

I hope it gets a fan translation.

Edit: I'm confused. Is the circle called SRPG Studio or D's Soft? The Siliconera article says it's SRPG Studio, but the blog says D's Soft.

The art looks great, but the actual graphics are so much trash. Can we raise a few hundred gs for the guy to make something that doesn't look like an SNES game?

I'd love to get my hands on an English SRPG studio. I had a blast using RPG Maker, and can only dream of working with an FE-like engine.

I actually find it really charming. I mean I agree, it's nothing spectacular, but I didn't find FE:A spectacular visually and enjoyed the hell out of it. I think this style works well for turn-based SRPGs.

I really want to post on his blog with an offer to translate this thing (even though I have no such experience). It sounds like a fun project.

Those designs are so much better than the actual FE designs lol

Well, technically, these are actual FE designs. The current portraits used in Vestaria Saga are of unused Tear Ring Saga characters, which were designed by the same person who did the character designs for Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.

From what I can tell, the game has little to no original graphics of any kind since practically everything is taken from the default SRPG Studio assets. So far, anyway.

Text heavy doujin games rarely get localised into English but this will likely be of a good enough quality to make it worthwhile for someone like Carpe Fulgur to pick up.

There is not established doujin circle here. It's just Kaga making the game himself with some of his personal friends. SRPG Studio is the name of the doujin SRPG game maker software which he is using. It's developed by SapphireSoft. You can find it here: http://srpgstudio.com/

D's Note is just the name of Kaga's personal blog.

Creator is a word that always gets thrown around loosely. It's a bit muddy, but Shouzo Kaga was hired by Intelligent Systems / Nintendo to be the scenario writer of the original Fire Emblem.

After all the series is a piggyback of the Famicom Wars title created by Nintendo R&D1 and Intelligent Systems.

He eventually became the series director for a while, but it's hard to say what he created besides the script of the original. But I will say that Fire Emblem 4 and Fire Emblem Thracia 776 are the best Fire Emblem games I ever played.

It's not really muddy or hard to say. There have been many interviews about Fire Emblem since the series was created. Kaga wasn't just "hired to be the scenario writer" at all. That's really disingenuous. He was the scenario writer and game designer for the first Fire Emblem, while the director and producer were Nintendo staff supervising the project because it was a brand new thing.

Kaga might not be the sole reason that Fire Emblem exists, but as the writer and lead game designer for the first 6 entries of the series over a decade, there is no question that he is regarded as one of the creators of Fire Emblem.

I can't say I agree, especially with the imply that I am saying something outlandish. I'm not saying he was only a "script writer", but that the main concept of the game does not have a clear origin. I've read a variety of Kaga's interviews from the original to the BS edition, as I am Fire Emblem fan myself. I can't say I ever read where he specifically states he created the game mechanic, which probably was something that the Wars programming team kind of came up with collectively. I believe that Kaga's main contribution to the original title was the script, of course he also contributed to the game design, maybe even some or many of the series' defining tropes (I think he suggested perma-deaths) - but the game design usually in those days came from the entire development team not one sole entity. Obviously he became the series director from the sequel on - forward.

I participate in these arguments about Metroid, Zelda, and Star Fox. No different really.

I'm sorry .... but I just don't see this, I mean you can give Kozaki some crap for the skimpy armor and weird armor designs (which are more on the art director), but .... his portraits ... are just a billion times better.

Although, I do really miss the 3/4/5 battle animations and they were there in Tear Ring Saga as well.

edit.

I wonder if there will be a map with borders in this game.

Just a slight correction, he left after Five (Thracia 776) and before Six (Sealed Sword the first gba game) and that's when the first Fire Emblem fan schism occurred.

Looks like something you could play on Windows 95. Heck, it reminds me of Legend of Cao Cao (which you should play if you like Fire Emblem BTW):

I'm absolutely in :] I want all the Fire Emblem and Fire Emblem-like stuff I can get. Plus I'm 100% sure there's no face rubbing in this game!

Pretty sure the original SRPG Maker was made for Windows 95, oddly enough.

A comment on the old Siliconera article stated Kaga and his team are actually open to supporting fan translations.

Definitely liking the look of those update screens---hopefully both the project and especially the engine can indeed continue to make progress at a good clip. You'd think the "genre creation tools" scene would be at a better place here in 2015 given how far back on hardware and power the old RPG Maker suite and their assorted compatriots goes, yet here we are with most open ground ceded to mega-engines and the notions reduced to wispy plugins or some such...

Same as most, Playism/Carpe Fulgur/anybody please---no telling how many other projects this man will wrangle, but surely this has enough of The Stuff to be well worth getting out there as a nice uptick versus otherwise.

What could happen is this gets a lot of attention following launch, enough for Playism or another localizer to inquire about polishing the audiovisuals/recreating the game in a better engine for sale.

That looks good considering he's doing it as a hobby project when he has time, lol. A sprite artist would be pretty amazing.

Is the art new because it feels like they're using stuff from Tear Ring Saga, or at least that style.

Unused art from Tear Ring iirc.

If I recall, the title screen artwork is fanart done for Berwick Saga, mostly as a placeholder and won't be in the final product.

I wonder if this will be a better SRPG than the new Fire Emblem. In terms of design, it certainly has a chance.

What is his actual job now? He's no longer in the industry, that much is obvious.
