SIFTD (Shane Satterfield's website) robbed of everything

Either this was an inside job or they got robbed by someone who knew how much equipment they had and how much it was worth.
It's in a building with multiple offices/businesses right? If so and if SIFTD was the only placed that got broken into then abso-fucking-lutely this was someone who knew about what was in there and possibly knew them.

My initial thought was insurance fraud by a company about to go under, but then I read on...

God damn, that is heartbreaking. Just unbelievably awful.

He said in that video that it was tough getting through the first year. It's a new site with very few subscribers, very few Youtube views on their original content, and while it's a great concept, it's competing against pretty much every message board, including GAF and reddit. And stuff like Google Now and RSS feeds. Tough market, tough product to sell, and now this. I feel really bad for Shane. He's a hardworking guy, and SIFTD is an extremely well built site and works really well. It's just a really tough sell in this era of the internet with its shifting business models and everything trending towards megacorporations controlling every aspect of it. I feel like if SIFTD launched in the early 2000s, it would be really huge today (and probably would've expanded outside of games). But today I don't even use it myself, despite recognizing it's a great product, because my needs are already covered by GAF and similar services. It's a real bummer though. It's depressing to see how hard it's become for startups to thrive in this era.

That's the thing about this that makes it especially tough to see. This isn't IGN, or even an ill-fated GameTrailers that this happened to. It's a guy who likely put - and was putting - everything he had into something he was passionate about, and literally overnight it could have been wiped away for good. I can't imagine how helpless he's felt today.

If the insurance doesn't come through, then I think this will be the end of siftd.

The way Shane potrays his site is that it is barely keeping it's head above water.

Losing all this equipment is probably the final blow.

That is unless someone comes in and gives him thousands to get equipment back.

No insurance and cameras not working?

Weird situation.

From my experience most of the 'around the clock' security camera setups don't work right, or often times at all - even when it's a selling point for why you should rent out space and set up shop there.

I'm sorry for Shane. He's a good guy and I always enjoyed him on Bonus Round with Pachter and Garnett and Geoff.

I'm sure he can bounce back from this. It honestly doesn't take much to set up again. He might not have the best equipment to start up with, but he could make it work somehow. And that's a lesson for all start ups to not start spending the money until its rolling in. I'm sure Shane can get at least a podcast and some videos going again on some very basic equipment.

Do people even read anything before commenting? They broke the front door of the building open and went through every office in the place. SIFTD just had the most valuable equipment in it, because the rest of the building is mostly acting classes and yoga studios. Shane is not attempting insurance fraud, and not everything is a fucking Law & Order episode. Christ.

Nah. As Shane said, some resourceful dirtbag built themselves a mechanical door-ripper, ripped their way into the secured building, then walked down the hall ripping secured doors open, one after another, looking for a good office to burglarize. People frequently have expensive stuff like computers in offices, so this kind of thing happens. It's not an inside job.

Once they popped SIFTD's door, they stopped asking what's behind the next door, because they had hit the motherlode. Time to fill the van and escape into the night (but not before knocking back a few of SIFTD's beers, because drunk driving is cool).

Edit: Beaten

This is just awful. Hope things get better for Shane and Co. I'm still holding on to hope that they'll be able to get back to the site.

Getting screwed over by your co-founder, having your equipment stolen...This is terrible. Shane can't catch a break.

Damn, that's awful. I've been robbed before, had a PS1 and Dreamcast and a bunch of games stolen. I knew who did it too and the cops didn't give a fuck.

I don't know what exactly happened between Marcus and Shane & SIFTD, but he's pulling for them.

I thought you were starting/spreading rumors for a second, but then I realized what you're saying and yeah, there's never a good time for this but shit man, this is like the worst time frame for this to happen. (I apologize for getting mad at you in my mind for the moment before I understood what you were saying)

Yeah, I've been the victim of a burglary too, and dude "sort of" got off because some improper interrogation procedure from one of the cops(guilty on theft, not B&E or anything else got off with time served). I had a 42 in TV, 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, my Thinkpad and two cameras stolen. Oh, along with 40 Xbox 360 games (including Mass Effect 1+2 Special Edition and Tales of Vesperia Limited Edition), 20 PS3 games, and 1 Wii game (although that one game was Metroid Prime Trilogy. It was in the system). I had serial numbers and everything, but I think if someone were resourceful enough to have that door-ripper, they probably would be keen to avoid like... the obvious avenues (ebay, Craigslist, pawns).

Really hoping that things can get rebuilt, and the site can get back to growing.

Sorry if I was being vague. I learned about the microsoft e3 thing last week and it me me really mad.

No, no apologies. This has kinda put me in a shitty mood, and I kinda thought you were saying something else at first. I'm sorry. In fact the only reason I brought it up was I wanted to apologize for a feeling I briefly got about you that you'd never know about, lol.
I should probably go to sleep.

Sad situation for SIFTD. Really bad timing for that to happen with the new focus and changes the site was about to do.

Yeah... Not to mention that E3 is only a couple weeks away...

So he is capable of empathy? That's a start.

Yeah, see Shane? Stop whining and listen to internet forum user arbok26 here. It's not a lot of stuff that you lost, it doesn't take much to get set up again, and also don't spend money until you're making it. Easy. Now suck it up and get back to making content for us to consume

What did Beer do? I never followed him much

It can't be a coincidence that this happened so soon after their new pricing options were started. I wonder if, whoever is behind this, actually followed the developments of the site.

Nah. I get why you'd make the connection, humans are wired to see patterns that way, but this is just a coincidence.

What would they have to gain by robbing them at this time specifically, anyway?

I know Marcus means well, but I feel like telling people to sign up to a site with an uncertain future seems a little irresponsible. If there was a way to donate outside of that, I think it would be better.

It's shitty, but thankfully in this case, people sign up for the content, not the production value. If there are no other options, they can use a cell phone and record an audio podcast. I doubt their subscribers would really give a shit.

I'm totally with Shane on this one. This is not fair. To have everything you've worked for taken on a whim is devastating, I would cry as well, probably worse, as others were depending on him and this site doing well.

I hope you find closure, Shane. I don't know of your legacy, but I feel your pain.

If you haven't paid the insurance, it's unlikely you have it. Insurance wants their money, without fail. Sucks that this happened. Catching the perps normally doesn't mean a return of everything stolen. You can sue, but they typically have nothing.

Ian (Easy Allies) does Easy Update using a phone and I think he edits on his personal laptop and people don't seem to mind (I don't), so that's definitely an option.

Read my post. Did I say anything about insurance fraud?

The office had their security cameras offline and the thieves were cocky enough to drink the beers out the fridge. Someone knew the cameras were offline.

My understanding is that he didn't show up for E3 coverage that he had agreed to weeks before and then boasted about it on social media.

In fairness, the CCTV was for the external office. The building got pwned, basically. It may not be a very good, or expensive, building.

I haven't visited the site and I just followed Pachter through YouTube, but this is absolutely terrible. I can't imagine having to pour all you passion into something like this and seeing it all disappear overnight. I hope they'll be able to pull through, I know the situation before was already pretty rough.

Criminals get caught on tape all the time. The other day on the news, they mentioned two who were cocky enough to have sex in front of the security cameras. There's no reason to suspect an inside job.

I initially read the title as thinking that the site itself was wiped out. Looks like they specifically stole the equipment. Still horrible though. Poor guy.

It's funny that you mentioned that; just last week, a couple jumped my fence, cut through the screen, and had sex on the back patio right in front of a camera that recorded all of it, while I was home. Called the police and they caught them in the act.
The sex itself also looked weak af.

I'm kinda surprised how many people immediately think "Huh, something is off here..."
Is insurance fraud that common in the US?

I think people are just less trustworthy nowadays and always focus on the victim before anything else, which then makes things worse when they look for things to add up and find "proof". Yes, there was a lot of weird sequences of events that led to this (especially none of the cameras working), but I think Shane is simply a victim. Now, maybe this is irresponsible on my part, but could someone that works for the building's security be behind it? It does seem suspect that a building that (in Shane's word) is plastered with warnings on the outside that cameras record everything has its cameras go out the same day all the different offices get hit.

I'm not surprised. I'll admit it was my second thought after "oh crap!" And that's not about Shane, specifically. I've seen plenty of restaurants go up in flames.

Shane just announced the other day that SIFTD was suffering financial hardships, and if he couldn't successfully raise prices and increase membership (at the same time), then his business was in imminent danger of collapsing. It's sort of a meme that when your startup fails, you're supposed to give up, burn it down (the fire is cathartic), collect the insurance money, and start again in some other line of work. I don't know how much that actually happens (probably not a lot), but I think the idea of it is pretty common.

Also, some fans were upset about the announcement (some fans can get mad about anything), so there's the question of "How far would a nerd go to satisfy his misguided nerd-rage?" Also, with Shane being a celebrity, he has his share of feuds and enemies. It raises the question of "Are any of his enemies spiteful enough to kick him while he's down?"

But it's simple Occam's Razor. It was an office break-in. They happen.

I'm guessing that the building owner felt that the cameras (and signs saying "look out, we have cameras") were more effective as a visual deterrent to crime than they were useful in giving police grainy video which tells them that the perp was medium height, medium build, wearing a mask, and driving a white van. The owner was too lazy to reset the VCR once a day, and if his tenant contract doesn't specify that he's providing working security cameras, he has the right to be that lazy. He's dismissing it as "just today" that he forgot to reset the tape.

And if the criminal came to this building with a tool designed to rip security doors off their hinges, they were not going to be "visually deterred" by the presence of security cameras. It likely doesn't even matter that the cameras were down. Preparing to defeat a security camera is as easy as wearing a ski mask.

Very good point. If you're right, I wonder if the building manager could be held liable for not providing proper security measures.

Brutal way to go down. Let's hope they can re-energize around a new concept. Hopefully it turns out for the best.

Can he sue the building manager or owner for negligence?

Some person in California was robbed when they had a doorman and they sued the owner and won.

Thanks to California’s rules regarding the liability of property owners for third party criminal acts, I was able to obtain a favorable settlement for my client.

Shave should look into that.

Wow, What a terrible turn of events. Been a fan of Shane since his GT days and I occasionally watch Game Face when I get a chance. I hope their insurance gets sorted out to cover what they lost and the thief's get caught with the left over beer.

I am rooting for you Shane, good luck.

I know it doesn't affect your larger point, but for those who didn't see the announcement, I think you're exaggerating it just a tad. The price increase is happening in conjunction with increased production of premium video content, as the feeling is more original content will drive more memberships. Yes, Shane said the site ultimately wasn't sustainable at the $30/year, but imminent collapse doesn't reflect any verbiage that I heard.
