It's in a building with multiple offices/businesses right? If so and if SIFTD was the only placed that got broken into then abso-fucking-lutely this was someone who knew about what was in there and possibly knew them.Either this was an inside job or they got robbed by someone who knew how much equipment they had and how much it was worth.
He said in that video that it was tough getting through the first year. It's a new site with very few subscribers, very few Youtube views on their original content, and while it's a great concept, it's competing against pretty much every message board, including GAF and reddit. And stuff like Google Now and RSS feeds. Tough market, tough product to sell, and now this. I feel really bad for Shane. He's a hardworking guy, and SIFTD is an extremely well built site and works really well. It's just a really tough sell in this era of the internet with its shifting business models and everything trending towards megacorporations controlling every aspect of it. I feel like if SIFTD launched in the early 2000s, it would be really huge today (and probably would've expanded outside of games). But today I don't even use it myself, despite recognizing it's a great product, because my needs are already covered by GAF and similar services. It's a real bummer though. It's depressing to see how hard it's become for startups to thrive in this era.
No insurance and cameras not working?
Weird situation.
Either this was an inside job or they got robbed by someone who knew how much equipment they had and how much it was worth.

Getting screwed over by your co-founder, having your equipment stolen...This is terrible. Shane can't catch a break.
I thought you were starting/spreading rumors for a second, but then I realized what you're saying and yeah, there's never a good time for this but shit man, this is like the worst time frame for this to happen. (I apologize for getting mad at you in my mind for the moment before I understood what you were saying)Getting screwed over by your co-founder, having your equipment stolen...This is terrible. Yeah, I've been the victim of a burglary too, and dude "sort of" got off because some improper interrogation procedure from one of the cops(guilty on theft, not B&E or anything else got off with time served). I had a 42 in TV, 360, PS3, Wii, PSP, my Thinkpad and two cameras stolen. Oh, along with 40 Xbox 360 games (including Mass Effect 1+2 Special Edition and Tales of Vesperia Limited Edition), 20 PS3 games, and 1 Wii game (although that one game was Metroid Prime Trilogy. It was in the system). I had serial numbers and everything, but I think if someone were resourceful enough to have that door-ripper, they probably would be keen to avoid like... the obvious avenues (ebay, Craigslist, pawns).Damn, that's awful. I've been robbed before, had a PS1 and Dreamcast and a bunch of games stolen. I knew who did it too and the cops didn't give a fuck.
Sorry if I was being vague. I learned about the microsoft e3 thing last week and it me me really mad.
Sad situation for SIFTD. Really bad timing for that to happen with the new focus and changes the site was about to do.
So he is capable of empathy? That's a start.I don't know what exactly happened between Marcus and Shane & SIFTD, but he's pulling for them.

Really hoping that things can get rebuilt, and the site can get back to growing.
Yeah, see Shane? Stop whining and listen to internet forum user arbok26 here. It's not a lot of stuff that you lost, it doesn't take much to get set up again, and also don't spend money until you're making it. Easy. Now suck it up and get back to making content for us to consumeI'm sorry for Shane. He's a good guy and I always enjoyed him on Bonus Round with Pachter and Garnett and Geoff.
I'm sure he can bounce back from this. It honestly doesn't take much to set up again. He might not have the best equipment to start up with, but he could make it work somehow. And that's a lesson for all start ups to not start spending the money until its rolling in. I'm sure Shane can get at least a podcast and some videos going again on some very basic equipment.
So he is capable of empathy? That's a start.

It can't be a coincidence that this happened so soon after their new pricing options were started. I wonder if, whoever is behind this, actually followed the developments of the site.

It's shitty, but thankfully in this case, people sign up for the content, not the production value. If there are no other options, they can use a cell phone and record an audio podcast. I doubt their subscribers would really give a shit.
Do people even read anything before commenting? They broke the front door of the building open and went through every office in the place. SIFTD just had the most valuable equipment in it, because the rest of the building is mostly acting classes and yoga studios. Shane is not attempting insurance fraud, and not everything is a fucking Law & Order episode. Christ.
My understanding is that he didn't show up for E3 coverage that he had agreed to weeks before and then boasted about it on social media. What did Beer do? I never followed him much

Read my post. Did I say anything about insurance fraud?
The office had their security cameras offline and the thieves were cocky enough to drink the beers out the fridge. Someone knew the cameras were offline.

It's funny that you mentioned that; just last week, a couple jumped my fence, cut through the screen, and had sex on the back patio right in front of a camera that recorded all of it, while I was home. Called the police and they caught them in the act.Criminals get caught on tape all the time. The other day on the news, they mentioned two who were cocky enough to have sex in front of the security cameras. There's no reason to suspect an inside job.
I'm kinda surprised how many people immediately think "Huh, something is off here..."
Is insurance fraud that common in the US?

I think people are just less trustworthy nowadays and always focus on the victim before anything else, which then makes things worse when they look for things to add up and find "proof". Yes, there was a lot of weird sequences of events that led to this (especially none of the cameras working), but I think Shane is simply a victim. Now, maybe this is irresponsible on my part, but could someone that works for the building's security be behind it? It does seem suspect that a building that (in Shane's word) is plastered with warnings on the outside that cameras record everything has its cameras go out the same day all the different offices get hit.
I'm guessing that the building owner felt that the cameras (and signs saying "look out, we have cameras") were more effective as a visual deterrent to crime than they were useful in giving police grainy video which tells them that the perp was medium height, medium build, wearing a mask, and driving a white van. The owner was too lazy to reset the VCR once a day, and if his tenant contract doesn't specify that he's providing working security cameras, he has the right to be that lazy. He's dismissing it as "just today" that he forgot to reset the tape.
If the insurance doesn't come through, then I think this will be the end of siftd.
The way Shane potrays his site is that it is barely keeping it's head above water.
Losing all this equipment is probably the final blow.
That is unless someone comes in and gives him thousands to get equipment back.
Shane just announced the other day that SIFTD was suffering financial hardships, and if he couldn't successfully raise prices and increase membership (at the same time), then his business was in imminent danger of collapsing. It's sort of a meme that when your startup fails, you're supposed to give up, burn it down (the fire is cathartic), collect the insurance money, and start again in some other line of work. I don't know how much that actually happens (probably not a lot), but I think the idea of it is pretty common.
For the love of god someone save Pachter Factor.
