woo that's pricey. Is that without tax? I think you can get that for around half the price in Europe.

Japan used to be the cheapest place in the world to get whisky, but because the yen is so expensive, that's not always the case anymore. Still, that is actually a not a bad price for that bottle and overall Japan is still cheaper than most places (certainly cheaper in most cases than purchasing directly in the UK surprisingly enough).

Anyone here use a Decanter?

got one for Christmas and haven't used it much. Any use of putting Whiskey in it other than looking like a bad ass from Mad Men?

actually yeah you are right. thought it was a regular bottling. but there seems to be quite a collectors premium on it now.

@stroke
personally i prefer the look of the original bottles, plus you can only fill on whiskey in there. so unless you have a mad men level of consumption for a certain bottling it seems impractical to me
/shrug

Not really, but I know some people who use a decanter to hold the blends they make from malts. It looks smart.

yay, got some new samples

wnAdl.jpg

it's a blend, but aparently a tasty one.

So I'm thinking of picking up a talisker 10 year my buddys going to bring an ardbeg 10 and we are going to have ourselves a very civilised whisky tasting.

I have never tried a japanese whisky. What can you recommend as a starter to break this horrible hole in my whisky knowledge?

since you are in Europe, "Nikka From the Barrel"
it costs a mere 25€ at cask strength (will need some water) and it most excellent. (lots of dry oak, caramel, orange, chocolate)
One of the best price/value whiskies you will find out there imo.

Otherwise you could try the Yamazaki 10 or 12 which is pretty easy to find everywhere.

A kindly secretary just dropped this off on my table, straight from the Netherlands.

Sorry about the crap phone picture quality.

Enjoy that tasty peaty strong motherfucker Glaurung!

Edit:

I just bought this one because I wanted something less peaty than all my Laphroaigs and Ardbegs

I must say.... delicious. Very nice quality for that price.

ah, good to see it arrived.
Just ordered an Ardbeg Corryvreckan (thank you Groupon.de for making this affordable :D)
the tasting notes for this one sound pretty damn good.

edit:
also got a few new samples
[IMG]http://www.abload.de/img/img_4864rxnl.jpg
Ardbeg Uuuhgideal (how do you spell that anyways?)
Highland Park 12
Glenlivet 18 (never had a Glenlivet and it seemingly is a GAF-Favorite?)

Recent tasting notes:

Lagavulin 16 (never tried older) is the dominant flavor of Chivas Regal blends.

Glenlivet 12 tastes like a blend of Glenfiddich 15 and Glenmorangie 10.

just drank a glass of this one and its pretty pleasant.
earthy and honey notes, with ever so slightly peat and smoke and very smooth.

I'd say this is also very suited for beginners

whelp, my first bottle of Ardbeg
a Corryvreckan
img_4865se03.jpg

also that Glenlivet 18 is for that age and price some boring shit. Not recommended.

Macallan 12 yr any good?
Personally, I love the stuff. I usually keep a bottle of it at all times at my place. And almost all bars have it stocked, so I tend to order it when i'm out too.

Good to know. I ought to enjoy it then.

It wasnt that good, to be honest. I have enjoyed some quality or the other in every single malt that i've tasted but the macallan was surprisingly average in comparison.

Gonna finish up the final sips of the glenmorangie while watching taxi driver right now. Gonna go and get some new malts next week! :D

Got a bottle of Yamazaki for my girlfriend for Valentine's Day. Haven't had time to enjoy it yet though. For a college student... that was a pretty big chunk of my budget for something consumable.

You bought scotch for your girlfriend? And this was a well-received gift? She's a keep'er.

I bought this bottle of Macallan in Amsterdam for my dad. I'm not a whiskydrinker, do ya'll think he'll enjoy it? Anybody here tried it?

selling my RPG collection and buying whisky to collect instead, it's part of growing up and staying a child at the same time i guess :P
Haha, I know the feeling. I just sold some of my sneaker connection, because I just dropped a bunch of money on booze this past weekend. Where are you getting those japanese whiskies from? I'm having trouble finding anything that's not Yamazaki 12 or 18 yr.

Being currently unemployed, I don't get to enjoy scotch whiskey as much as I'd like. Anyone have any suggestions for lower priced scotch (or other) whiskey that isn't terrible?

Any good places to order whiskey online? I'm a huge fan of Yamazaki but I'm having trouble finding other Suntory whiskeys (or any japanese whiskeys for that matter) locally.

i assume you guys are from the US which makes things a bit more difficult. i think Europe and Asia have a much bigger premium whisky market.

Some us based whisky dudes can probably help you out better with this but:
if you are not afraid of high shipping costs importing is an option.
like http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com and many others
but unless you order a bunch of bottles (like 4+, maybe together with friends) the shipping cost is way to high imo.
if you are looking for rare (and expensive) bottles
http://whiskyauction.com/ is a great place, they run monthly auctions, sort of like ebay, except they run centralized once a month. (also the website looks like straight out of 90s :P)
be prepared to shell out big bucks there.

some good other websites for whisky in general are
http://whiskybase.com/ which is like those DVD collection websites with an insane amount of whiskys catalogued, where you can manage your collection, read other users ratings/reviews, etc.
your collection looks like this
capturevt8w.png

and of course http://www.whiskyfun.com/
the website of whisky tasting superstar Serge Valentine. it has a huge archive of his tasting notes and reviews. he is super influential, if a limited bottling gets a 90+ rating the bottles sell out in no time and values soar :P

generally there aren't really bad bottling in the 30 $/€ starting range, comes more down to your personal taste imo

Picked up a bottle of this and just had to have a taste, even at one in the afternoon. Very nice. Have to stop myself from drinking more. For whatever reason, I have stronger desire to drink in the morning than I do at night. It just seems a better way to start a day, than end it.

I'm probably gonna finish off my Macallan 12 tonight. Not the best scotch I've had but I liked it well enough.

Maybe try an Oban next?

I'm going to a whisky tasting end May, and we'll be looking through the Glenfiddich whisky's. Not the most exciting brand perhaps, but oh well.. it'll be fun!

The 12/15/18/21/30 years old will be there + a surprise. I've had the 12 & 15 multiple times and the 18 a couple of glasses, but I'm pretty excited to check out those older ones.

I'm a big whisky fan btw, but it's such a expensive hobby. :(

i've been enjoying this one. plums and grapes, some salt & pepper, which will fade when you add a bit of water. light-medium peat, a good balance between fruit and peat in my opinion.

43,50 % Vol. very delicious and good enough to keep a bottle around.
