i'm going out of the country for the last two weeks of december. i was wodnering will it be cheaper for me to buy good scotch from hithrow or other asian airports rather than buying domestically within the US? also, what are some good websites, if any, to order whisky from?

and my current brand of choice:

I'm a big fan of The Glenlivet. I love to treat myself every once in a while to a nice bottle of that...perhaps I may do that this weekend.

Glenmorangie. Of the three years available (10, 15 and 18 year olds), my favorite is the 15. The 18 year old is amazingly smooth and mellow, but 15 shows more of that fire-in-the-belly quality you'd expect in a Highland dram.

Welsh whisky. Mmm.

I love Tobermory, despite the fact that the bottle looks like a cheap port bottle.

wow, a 38 year old Oban. 399 pounds or dollars? lagavulin is awesome, as is caol ila. anyone tried bruichladdich?

edit:

my collection

balvenie portwood - 2 bottles
balvenie doublewood - 1 bottle
caol ila 12 - 1 bottle
macallan 12 - 1 bottle
talisker 18 - 1 bottle (i need to buy more)
glenfiddich 12 - 1 bottle (why is this the most popular single malt again? its just, so, standard!)
bowmore 12 - 1 bottle

PS: really like lagavulin, i love the islays.

I've been digging on the

bruichladdich lately.

TBH I really don't know a good cheap place to buy nice scotch though. I have been going to this local place with a good selection and helpful staff.

i just bought a Glenrothes Lonach, 35 year old, single malt.

anyone have any idea about this one? i sorta bought it blindly. :lol

I work next door to a bar that boasts the largest collection of single malts in the world. Not quite sure if it's true, but they have weekly tastings and it is awesome. Haven't quite picked a favorite yet, but there is one that I cannot remember that tasted almost exactly like a campfire. In a good way.

Big Lagavulin fan myself. I highly recommend the Distiller's Edition, that was matured in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. Talisker, Caol Ila and Laphroaig are also rather excellent -- heck, I like pretty much any Islay whisky. They tend to be peaty and complex.

Outside of Islay, The Balvenie (Speyside) and Highland Park (Orkney) are two of my favorites. If you'd like to try a good Speyside, a bottle of Balvenie Founder's Reserve (10 yrs) isn't expensive (under $40) and it's possibly even better than the older, more expensive ones from that distillery.

I managed to get two Glenmorangie Golden Rum Cask 12 year old bottles of whiskey on the cheap, they are really really good

this man has the right answer.

I love the words used to imply that alcohol and tobacco products are somehow premiums.

"Single Highland"

"Rare malt"

"Natural Cask Strength"

"Authentic Collection"

"Pounder's Reserve"

"Original"

"Pure"

Could add "BS".

For the money, I've yet to find anything that bests Bushmills 10yo single malt

You guys should look up their aging process ... its quite interesting :)

Such a complex flavor. No signs of peat at all, but an interesting overtone of rye. Damnit, I'm staring at an empty bottle of it in my liquor cabinet right now :(

I just picked up a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year. It smells so good, it is taking every ounce of willpower I have not to pour a glass right now. I am trying to save it for special occasions.

i like lagavulin. glenlivet and glenfidditch and macallans are alright too, and those balvenie scotches are also good. i've had some of those talisker ones before, i believe i liked those. anybody ever try any aberlour scotches?

lagavulin rules because it tastes like a bog

i tried suntory single malt when i was in japan, and it was surprisingly really good

Can some one recomend good Japanese singel malt whisky ? I was bit skeptical with Japanese whisky but after few random tastes i find them pretty darn good. So good Japanese singel malts ?

Wood and to be more precise it tastes like oak. But after "studying" several whiskeys you start to taste the differences in them, but first you propably just taste the woodish taste.

it depends on what it's been aged in and the water involved in making it, which is a regional difference...but yea it generally has a woodish taste

Jim Beam is shit. Jack Daniels isn't terrible, but you'd do far better spending the same amount and getting Maker's Mark.

But, this is a Scotch thread, not a bourbon thread. I love Balvenie, Oban, Lagavulin, Johnnie Walker Gold or Blue. One of my favorites from years past was Loch Dhu, the Black Whisky, which is no longer made.

Like meeting a 43 year old woman with 7 kids, going back to her place, and then the obvious.

That's the effects of Whiskey.

If you do drink it, do it alone.

I soooo want to try single malts but I'm poor and out of the loop. Damn you education.

You can probably find a sampler - I know there is an affordable one by Balvenie, three small bottles for about $15.99 or so.

Best damn scotch in the world. It's hard to find though and as far as finding it in a cafe or bar... Well that's pretty much nil. I have found it in one cafe though in the Blue Mountains of all places (Australia), and it soon became one of my favourite eating places.

Others I enjoy are Glenmorangie, Highland Park, Talisker, Macallan, and a few others. But nothing beats Lagavulin. Everyone needs to try it at least once in their lives.

depends on region, aging process and whether it's blended or not, and of course whether its made from barley (most single malt scotches) or rye (bourbon, rye whiskey).

single malt (the brands mentioned in this thread, aside from jack daniels and jim beam) = uses a uniform batch of malted barley to create the liqueur.

blended scotch (red label, black label, most cheap whiskeys) = blend of different single malt batches

for taste...single malts will have the most complex flavour. could be woodsy, smokey, caramelly, orangie, vanilla...it really depends on the aging process and whether the malt was peated (charcoal dried) or not. and finally the kind of barrels it was aged in. usually oak barrels, but distilleries will often have side-brands aged in port casks, rum casks, sauterne casks to give the whisky a different kind of flavour.

usually you wont understand whisky in the beginning, but after tasting different single malt batches, you will start to learn and appreciate the tastes and differences.

single malts are not to be mixed with anything, just strictly sipped.

for reference, whiskey and coke, 7 & 7 etc are made with blended cheap whiskeys.

edit: i did try aberlour...it is a good whisky, but i'd definitely recommend the lagavulin over it (same age, only $5 more). aberlour is speyside, whereas lagavulin is islay, but lagavulin is very sophisticated and subtle, its not a wild islay whisky...so they can be compared to an extent.

I tried two whiskies this week, recommned by the bar keep at the pool hall, Had two singles neat of course. Some of the best hours of pool I've played. :

Good Good stuff. I enjoyed that alot more than Walker Black.

I also tried the 12 year Glenlevit at chilis. That was their "top top shelf" liquor. I almost laughed a little at the waitress. Don't ge tme wrong, that shit was delicious and smooth, but it was just funny she was calling a 12 yr whisky top shelf. =D

I know this thread is super old, but there's some good posts in here. I'm about to delve into buying my first bottle of single malt, well 2nd as I bought a Glenlivet 12 a while ago, but i'm looking for options in buying a good quality single malt whiskey. I've been drinking Johnny Walker Black for a while, and want to step up my game.

I've got Highland Park 12 & Macallan 12 on my short list, any other suggestions for a guy coming off JW Black?

Perfect timing. I bought a single malt this morning.

Is this one any good? I'm a n00b, hopefully it wasn't a bad choice.
