Eh, "Fire" was pretty good. Watching both episodes back to back as a sort of "film" was definitely the right way to go. I'll be doing the same for "Pure" and "Rise".
I thought that it was interesting that the two episodes of "Fire" worked as a sort of microcosm of the show itself. Episode 1 (and seasons 1, 3, and 5) was much lighter and happier than episode 2 (and seasons 2, 4, and 6) which was pretty much the typical 'Skins' misery porn with everything going to hell followed by a sort of upbeat ending. Also, someone died in episode 2 (well, Naomi is going to die, but it doesn't actually happen on screen) which keeps with the tradition of killing someone off in the final season (Chris in 2, Freddie in 4, Grace in 6). I hope "Pure" and "Rise" do their own thing, however.
Other thoughts:
Naomi - "I have cancer, I'm dying, Emily will be sad, etc. etc. sad stuff"
Effy - "Stop talking like a dick!"
I literally laughed out loud when she said that. oh my god
And of course they'd end these character's storylines by having Naomi die, Emily wallowing in misery, and Effy going to jail. lol skins
Also, Effy just had to do coke one more time:
I was a bit disappointed that they didn't make a new remix of the 'Skins' theme song. I was really looking forward to hearing what they'd do to it this time.
From the moment the episode started with the subdued version of the Skins theme...
I thought heard a bit of a jingle at the beginning of the first episode, but it didn't really sound like the theme to me so I sort of didn't register it. Maybe someone will put the bit on youtube so I can listen to it again.
Skins never aired beyond series 3 in the US and no dvd was released beyond 4. Americans kinda got screwed if they wanted to watch it.
Hulu had all the seasons of it available online for free, and they aired new episodes the day after they aired in the UK, starting with season 5. Netflix acquired the rights though and now Hulu doesn't have it anymore. :/
The Telegraph gave the episode four stars:

As all adolescent boys find out early and never learn: playing with ice can be as dangerous as playing with fire.
Um, what?
I don't think the episode felt much like Skins but I really enjoyed it. Seems like the show has matured with its characters
I didn't think so either. It definitely felt like something new - something a little more grown up. I dug it. I really enjoyed seeing Effy as a workaholic, rejecting Naomi's partying lifestyle in favor of her boring job. That was a nice little twist.
i thought it was a genuinely thoughtful look at how effy's character would adapt to the real world.
I thought so too. Effy's developments felt true to her character. I felt that they really put a lot of thought into what/who an adult Effy would turn out to be.
She learnt everything (well enough to start trading) about FX, hedge funds and derivatives in one day, one evening in fact. To even suggest that's possible is a sin.
Yeah, the plotting in the first episode was very shaky. I didn't buy for a second that she could learn all of that in just one day. Especially when all the info was drawn in chalk on the top of a roof.
And finally, that ending shot was just perfect.
