Skyrim: New(er) Screenshots and Previews

Also, I was wondering if they'd put something in to stop you from going straight to every word wall, provided you know where they're at beforehand. Though I'm assuming some (or a lot) will be in high level dungeons. And of course you'll always have to kill more dragons to even be able to use them.
I'm pretty sure the bulk of the shouts will belong to the main story so they're probably locked in areas you can't access from the get-go, after all it seems the game's main quest is about you becoming more powerful as Dovahkiin.

I'll be getting this on PC, but I was wondering if it'll be like Oblivion where there was a steam version and a non-steam version? Apparently the whole Games for Windows Live thing on the box is just marketing? I love Steam to death, but modability is really important to me, and I seem to remember the steam version of Oblivion not playing nice with mods, so I'm not exactly sure if there's a particular version I should be looking at, or whether they're all just the same.

It's a steamworks game not a GFWL, so you can't be sure that there is an independent version until its detailed, though I very highly doubt there isn't.

There is no Games for Windows Live on the box. It's Games for Windows, which is completely different from Live. All it means is it should have controller support and a few other things(which some GFW games don't even support so just look at it as "It's a PC game!"). The game being on Steam won't affect modability, the only reason mods didnt play as nice on the Steam version was because sometimes steam games are slightly different than their regular counterpart so if a mod was made for the regular version it would have to be changed to be compatible with the Steam version. Since the game is Steamworks it won't matter as the Steam version will be the only one and all mods will be made for it.

Can't wait to use my Ethereal Form and jump off the top of the Throat of the World just because I can. This game looks absolutely fantastic.

So does anyone know any decent preorder deals for the PC version? I haven't really seen any and this not being on green man gaming is really going to fuck me over. I'd rather not buy it for $60.

Also it has to either be a digital deal or online shipping place like Amazon. I'm getting surgery next week so I won't be able to go to a place like Gamestop or Wal Mart and pick it up.

There were some complaints in the beginning, but Valve turned out to be pretty open to modding, and developed a way for the script extender (which was the real issue) to run on the Steam version.

They even allowed this with Fallout 3, although using this meant no GFWL achievements.

New Vegas supports script extensions from the get go, and you can still get (Steam) achievements no matter how heavily modded your game is. The big thing is the console. Opening that turns off achievements until you restart the game.

I can't see why Valve would not treat Skyrim the same way they treated New Vegas.

Edit:

Amazon seems to be the cheapest, but unfortunately ordering through them means risking the dodgy UPS driver delivering to my apartment since November 11th is Veterans Day.

The other option is to preorder through Steam and risk not being able to download it since everyone else is doing the exact same thing. How has Steam handled that in the past?

The few times that I had a game preordered through Steam that unlocked at midnight went well. The only problems I had were caused by developers like Dead Island and Rage. I'll wait for another week and a half or so and see if anything comes up then probably just preorder it through Steam. I hope they do a preload at least.

The Elder Scrolls has removed rpg gameplay in favor of action orientated gameplay because its more popular. This is an undeniable fact. Combat, the most abundant source of conflict in the series (no dialogue with skill checks being another major one in todays rpgs), went from being completely rpg driven in Arena, Daggerfall, and Morrowind to practically straight-up action in Oblivion. Since combat is so prevalent in the series that is a huge blow to the amount of role-playing mechanics the series had.
Hrmm. Simply regard your distance from the enemy, length and style of weapon, etc. as theoretical stats. Consider the enemy's movement and your personal accuracy as theoretical variables. Now you've got a stat-based combat system! Better?

The difference is one of direct vs indirect and its a big difference. One uses the twitch reflexes of the gamer to determine whether or not the monster is hit.. the other takes the command to attack and then uses the stats of the character to determine whether or not the monster is hit. Even the supposed "action" elements in the previous installments (chop, swing, stab) were merely methods to instruct the character what to do. The outcome of the action was based on the characters stats and not on how accurate you personally were with hitting a mudcrab with a huge sword.

I really don't have a problem with that change. Going from Oblivion to Morrowind it's pretty damned jarring when I stand on top of an enemy yet most of my swings miss. Stats still make a difference, instead of hitting more often you do more damage per hit.

Ice form looks amazeballs. I really love how shouts are "magic for non-mages," although of course mages can use them too. One of my biggest problems with D&D-inspired games (pre-4e <3) is that physical characters are boring as hell. Moveset: swing, power attack. jRPGs did this too for the longest time, usually without even the power attack.

Now that there are shouts built specifically for warrior- and rogue-type characters, it feels like everybody has options. Sure, mages still have the most, and I'm okay with that. But being able to enchant your weapons with superspeed, dash forward quickly, or encase your foes in ice so that you can utilize your warhammer to shatter them? Awesome.

Minor mechanics question: does anybody know if the cooldown time for shouts is universal, or is it per-shout? I think it's per-shout, since in the twenty-minute demo we now know that Todd shouted out Slow Time and then Unrelenting Force.

Huh, looks like they might be doing an actual live-action trailer.

There was something on Bethesda's boards about an actors resume doing one...Hopefully it'll be soon!

Agreed, if you want completely stat based combat then play a turn based game.

Cool footage. I said "wow" when
he used Ethereal Form to jump from that mountain
. Awesome.
This is why I shouldn't have watched GTTV. Imagine experiencing that in-game without any pre-knowledge of it. God damn it.

My thoughts exactly. I really wish I hadn't watched it.

Oh well. At least there will be a lot more to discover in the actual game.

I see your point. But I'm confident my jaw will drop plenty more times during the game.

This video was posted in the thread about long games being shorter than they actually are. In this video Dagoth Vemyn is attacked exactly 10 times by a level 1 character and Vemyn is hit exactly 10 times. The characters Spear skill isnt very high because it levels during the batle from 10 to 11.

If you played Morrowind and missed many times at the beginning either use a weapon your character didnt had proficiency in (lower than 10.. but you would quickly raise skill so the period where you character becomes proficient passes in a couple minutes) or you were attacking incorrectly (ie, dont Chop while wielding a spear, thrust instead).

Anyway.. about Skyrim. i dont get the comments that the game doesnt look great. i think the game looks absolutely gorgeous. Since the reveal its been impressive and continues to be so up to this latest round of previews.

Seriously. So awesome. And the animation actually looked cool. Also liked the ice one.

So apparently Todd Howard has put over a thousand hours in the game and he's still finding things that surprise him. Goodbye life :(

Didn't read the video description? He's using Morrowind v1.0 which had a bug that allows you to stack constant effect enchantments. No way it would've worked without that bug.

"I use that bug on keening to gain an extreme amount of speed, agility, luck, fortify health and I also use it with sunder too(Strength, Endurance and Luck). With such amounts I can hit enemies with any weapon no matter the skill level"

Awesome, thanks.

Man, I love the sound of the ice shout. EIS ZA NOOS! I'm gonna get all excited when getting new shouts in the game, and not just for a new power, but just to hear the awesome yells.
I've heard male and female but I assume there'll be unique voices for Khajit, Argonian and Orc? Shame if there isn't (though probably easy to mod).
