Sleeping Dogs PC Performance Thread

It's been a few weeks since I submitted the stuttering problem directly to SE, and mentioned that they could alleviate almost literally 99% of our problems by including a borderless windowed mode. Any word on progress by the development team? I have stopped playing the game since it is quite annoying to see the image jerk whenever I dare move the camera.

Also on the invisible mountains thing, I get that sometimes no matter what Nvidia drivers I have used all the way back to pre 300 drivers.

My drivers have been fully up to date for months - months where your game has been on the market and should have been functioning properly. These are the brand new beta drivers that only came out in the last two weeks.

The high and mighty attitude is not appreciated, especially when so many of your customers still have a broken experience to this date.
Hey, sorry for the snarky reply earlier... and you're right, the game should have worked properly for you right out of the gate. Please accept my sincere apologies, it's just that I've been on the receiving end of so many tech support requests which were solved by people simply updating their drivers. FWIW, I'm just glad that the new beta drivers have gone some way to resolving your issue. Tbh, maybe I should have just said that instead and left it there.

I'm afraid I've no progress to report, but I'll re-flag it with the Production team.

Is United Front working on a patch ? I read this a couple of months ago on dso-gaming.
We are working on a patch for the HKship.exe crash issue, but we need your help to effect it - please see this post for details.

Also, Jeff Bell LOL. I remember that the first time round.

It's cool, I think I probably jumped the gun saying that the issue was fixed - after restarting my PC in the last couple of days, the stuttering problem seems to have crept back. So I don't think it's to do with drivers. It's really bizarre as sometimes when I randomly jump into the game, it will be fine, but most other times it will microstutter (the framerate counter in FRAPS goes wildly between 59-61 fps when this occurs). I'm now looking into what processes may be running in the background and what the CPU is doing when it stutters.

I've since found that locking it to 58fps with triple buffered vsync enabled helps reduce (but not totally eliminate) my stuttering problem. Putting SSAO on normal helps with drops below this number (I got this nugget of info from the official forums to boot!).

Bugbear fixed a similar stuttering problem in Ridge Racer: Unbounded by updating the software they were using for the HUD. I think it was Flash or something similar. Maybe something to pass on to the tech guys.

Is it true that people are having issues after installing the hi res texture DLC?

Err..I hope I have no issues on my PC ;x.

If I do, any chance to remove the DLC?

Fnished the game yesterday and I am wrapping up missions, favors etc.

In terms of crashes, the game crashed twice while in-game, for no apparent reason, forcing me to replay a couple of missions.

However I have a frequent problem with crashes when I launch it, when the first screen comes up. I don't know if it's been mentioned before in the thread, but once the game launches, sometimes the 'steam community shift+tab' meassage does not pop up, and that's when I know the game has crashed. To remedy it I just terminate the exe.

Scaleform (which is flash-bashed), I believe, is what they used for GUI and apparently so does Sleeping Dogs so you might be on to something here.
how much more taxing are the high res textures compared to without in regards to FPS on average?
I don't think I had any fps hit with them on 1920x1080 on a 5850 as long as I kept the shadows at a reasonable level.

Quick question. I had steam open, was looking at the in store browser for DLC packs. And I left it open for a bit (stopped to look at the googles) and I come back to see the game is updating 4.5gigs O.O what the hell just happened. I already have the HD texture pack... Can anyone help me out here? After its finished downloading I want to check the size of the game folder in steam to see if i doubled up on anything. Can anyone tell me what size the folder should be with the HD texture pack installed?

This isn't cool considering I have a monthly cap.

patch is downloading for everyone, it started for me just now. No idea what the patch is doing though.

Yeah, no changelog on their forums.

Pretty big so I guess it contained data for new DLC packs. I think the next one will add a new Island with a fighting tournament.

The only thing I noticed has changed is the borderless full screen app no longer works with the game. Now it's even more unplayable for me. It was a fun 5 hour run, but nothing I do ever results in smooth gameplay.

The hell 4.5GB? better be worth it that's massive for a patch.
I swear i have never had a game work so hard against me (well......except ES:IV)

Ugh, I decided to finally start the Nightmare DLC but for some reason no matter what I do I get screen tearing. In game Vsync, Inspector forced Vsync, and D3D Vsync all don't work. I've never had this happen in a game before @_@

If you're using windowed mode (or a borderless windowed hack) then you can't have vsync.

I just fired this back up for the first time since it launched. I didn't really play it much back then so I don't remember...but it has unplayable stuttering for me on my 580. Even when it says "60.1" on the afterburner OSD.

The developers have really missed the boat on this stuttering problem. The only response I got for a remedy was that it was the Nvidia 6xx series issue where the framerate would go from a solid 60 to ~55 and then back up in a split second. That has nothing to do with this games serious issues.

I've requested the v1.8 Patch Notes and will share them here as soon as they have been made available to me.

Changes
 • Support for upcoming DLC packs including the Zodiac Tournament
 • Added the option to disable the in-world GPS arrows
 • Various minor UI and gameplay fixes
Unfortunately the fix for the v-sync issue didn't make it into 1.8, but we should be able to get it into 1.9 (which won’t be far off).

It looks like it is gone. I think there might be a performance boost too. My game has never run this smooth before.

Edit:
Looks like we aren't imagining things. From the official forums:

Hi all,

We've put out a new patch today that we hope resolves some issues around framerate stuttering. Feel free to vote in the poll and let us know if this improves performance (not necessarily framerate, but overall performance smoothness and consistency).

Sleeping Dogs 1.9 Patch Release Notes
• Potential fixes for vsync and fullscreen “stutter” performance issues
• Fixed an issue with stuttering and low-framerate at the start of a police chase
• New option in the displaysettings.xml to adjust the number of smoothing frames <TimeStepSmoothingFrames> (default 5)

Enjoy!

So micro-stutter is gone now, but it looks like the V-Sync option is still broken for me. I'll try D3D/inspector some other time.

Just started to play again tonight after almost finishing and stopping for some reason a few weeks ago.

Game plays much better with the newest nvidia drivers and the new patch. No motion sickness from driving and fast camera movements.

I wonder if the TimeStepSmoothingFrames introduces any input lag. It sounds a lot like a maximum pre-rendered frames type setting that caches frames to improve smoothness but also increase input lag. Either way, it's a welcome option for those with the stuttering issue for sure.

I can confirm that my stuttering is gone. Hurray! But,

1. Why did it take so long?
2. What was the problem?
3. Why didn't the devs just release a note that they were working on it? Would've saved a lot of headache.

But most of all I'm really glad that I can finally play it now!!! Thanks guys.

I'm still getting a fair bit of some kind of stutter... it'll drop frames around 25% of the time, the other 75% is capable of hitting 100fps+. I guess it's some kind of thing with either loading assets or textures or geometry or something, because most of the time on foot it's barely noticeable. No idea whether it's just that my PC isn't up to scratch (wouldn't have thought so... 5850+5970, game running of a RAID-0 SSD config and 2500K @ 4.9GHz) or what, but it's weird not seeing people in here mention it.

That's an interesting set up. Tricrossfire with different GPUs? Do you run into many issues?

Not at all. They're the same architecture, but the 5970 has stuff like more pipelines per GPU, so it only uses the number that's on the 5850 for both. Other than that, as long as I run them at the same memory and GPU clock speeds (but I have a feeling that even if I don't) it runs flawlessly. Still smashes the fuck out of pretty much anything, with the only bottleneck now being the (effective) 1GB of VRAM.

The game runs and looks and plays really good so far, I'm really happy with the purchase, not like GTAIV. Core 2 Duo E8500, 4GB ram, GTX285. It mostly sits at 40 fps, quite often in less busy areas at 60 and so far it only goes down to around 30 when I'm doing things like the final rounds of the street fighting stuff which have you against a whole lot of opponents at once or very rarely when driving through certain areas. I'm not sure if this is indicative of how it will perform for the whole game but I could still reduce some settings, I have it all set at around medium level (detail on high, motion blur off, most of the rest on normal) and it still looks nice and slick, only with some obvious pop in when driving (actually it was more obvious with detail on normal which I first tried but upon setting it to high performance wasn't impacted much at all so I'm keeping it).

Stutter has been completely eliminated for me with this latest patch. Wonder what the specific problem was? It would help a large number of current games with this issue.

Stutter free here too. Great work :)

Two additional things i would love to see:

1. Depth of Field on/off options

2. More refresh rate options.

picked it up for £3.14 from greenman, no stutter here even on triple screen 6040x1080, plays great maxed out barring aa

I am having great fun with this game! I haven't had any issues but that is probably because I use an AMD GPU. The game looks amazing thanks to the High Res Packs as well. It has honestly been on of my fave open world titles to date.

Congrats to United Front, my framerate has gone up dramatically, I gained 10fps after the pach if the benchmark is to be trusted.

The daylight stuttering was already subtle before, it bas been completely disappeared now.
