Sleeping Dogs PC Performance Thread

I'm getting a black screen whenever I start the game up. I'm running Windows 8 and have an AMD 7850 with the newest drivers. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I can confirm that my stuttering is gone. Hurray! But,

1. Why did it take so long?
2. What was the problem?
3. Why didn't the devs just release a note that they were working on it? Would've saved a lot of headache.

But most of all I'm really glad that I can finally play it now!!! Thanks guys.
I could've sworn I'd said we were looking into it ages ago... oh well, at least it's fixed now. That's the main thing.

Guys can you help me to find the High Res DLC pack? If i go to the DLC tab in Steam it says
"Downloadable Content for Sleeping Dogs: There is no downloadable content available for this game."

Im from Germany if that helps.

I had to go to the steam store and find the texture pack there, it wasn't in my DLC section for the game by default.

It has been a while since I have seen such unfriendly problems with a PC game.

Instant crash to the desktop after selecting "new game", with no error message regardless of any settings/compatibility mode/driver updates/etc.

Tried various graphics presets (high, medium, etc), with/without HD texture pack, running as 'Administrator', running in XP and 7 Compatibility mode.

Windows 8 with latest updates,

560 Ti, nVidia 306 and 310 drivers (not overclocking),

i5 2500k @ 4.2Ghz stable for 1.5 years prior to this.

You have the game through steam? Try verifying integrity of local files. It's in the properties menu of the game in the library.

Played for about 14 hours and the game crashed once or twice but now it just crashes every time I play the game. Weirdly enough all crashes occur when I drive a vehicle near the hospital area in Central but that's probably just a coincidence since all my missions are in that area. Tried verifying local content, installing new geforce drivers, "solutions" on the internet (setting some things in Nvidia Control panel).

Running Windows 7 64bit with a Nvidia geforce GTX570.

Does anyone else have a problem with the character voices being extremely quiet / basically inaudible during cutscenes? I've just started the game, and looked it up online and it seems like a few people have run into this, but I haven't found any recommended solutions. Anyone here know how to fix this?

Everything else sounds completely normal, including the voices outside of cutscenes. When you're in the cutscenes, though, all the characters sound muffled or like they're talking from really far away.

I appreciate it but it looks like I came across a fix. Thanks though.

Just saw this post so I thought I'd chime in. I had this happen as well. I have a 7000 series card, too. Solved the issue by downloading the beta 12.11 Catalyst drivers here: http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst1211betadriver.aspx. I was on 12.10 before.

I downloaded the drivers and it's working great now. Thanks a ton!

I got this game about a week ago during the steam sale and am having a very weird issue. My monitor is 1920x1200 and I have an AMD 6950. When I select the native resolution, the game letterboxes my screen. If I drop down to 1920x1080, the game displays at full screen (I'm assuming it stretches it). Has anyone had a similar issue? I will admit that I did not read the whole thread as it is fairly long. Any help would be appreciated!

Is VSync now broken for anyone else with this latest update or is it just on my system? It's tearing like hell and D3DOverrider just seems to make it worse.

EDIT: Ignore me. I must have been playing around with adaptive VSync and forgotten about it.

I haven't been able to connect to the ridiculous in-game network since I first picked this up on Steam. Disabling my virus scanner and firewall does not help and I don't have a problem with any other game.

Minor tweaks and adds support for future DLC.
There is so much damn DLC for this game. I haven't counted but I wouldn't be surprised if the total price surpasses that of the game.

Edit: This came off kind of rude, but it wasn't meant to be. :) Bring on more quest DLCs!

Since I dumped my crappy German version of the game (censored + no updates beyond 1.5) I am running in the clothes reset bug now. + the annoying message when loading a save game that certain content is not compatible.

I wish this could be fixed.

Otherwise this game is my GOTY.

Great game, great performance using the default low settings except for high res textures on my 4 year old low end laptop packing a Core 2 Dup (the horror!) @ 2.8 GHz and an OCed AMD Radeon 4670 card (lol). 40+ FPS at night and ~30 FPS in the daytime unless driving.

Just a question though. Since patch 1.9 there's that TimeStepSmoothingFrames option in the xml, is it best to leave it at 5, or does lowering it/increasing it help you gain more FPS in the game?

Think yourself lucky :-) I'd rather that than have a 1GB 'update' every month! This game has the worst updating process I've ever seen.

Developer's statement: "Thou shall download the dlc whether you want it or not"

I don't have a bandwith cap and 1GB is nothing, so I don't mind the updates. :) Most of the time the updates also seem to includes useful fixes or additions.

Downloading 15gb AC3 on crappy Uplay with bad speeds is whole different story though...

Back to the game, this time for good, since the stuttering seems to be gone! Yay!

But is something wrong with my PC or cars and especially bikes are too damn fast? I got the hang of it and now can drive fine but I still have the feeling they are faster than they should, or at least the game seems to go faster when driving. Can't really express it better than this. I even limited my framerate to 30 with MSI Afterburner but that's not it...
Am I simply too used to GTA4's physics?

Had this game free with my GPU for a while, got the 75% off super cheap DLC today.

I load it up and it just locks and hangs? Tried a few things but still the same, any ideas?

Running on Windows 8

Version 2.1 of Sleeping Dogs for Windows PC will go live today (North American time).

Sleeping Dogs – Update 2.1 Release Notes

  • Support for future DLC packs
  • Reintroduced fix for VSync ‘stutter’ issue
  • Reverted minor unintended changes to some cut-scenes introduced in update 2.0
Essentially, this update reverts the few issues from update 2.0 and adds support for our forthcoming story mission DLC.

Nice, didn't know that was coming. Will definitely keep it installed then, even though I finished it yesterday. Amazing game.

Can you give us a hint about this story mission DLC release date? :P

Details to follow this Friday or, failing that, Monday.

I haven't had a single crash/freeze. It has been running beautifully on my system at 60fps. Looks gorgeous. I have probably logged in 2-3hrs. I have everything maxed except AA which is the second setting (think it's FXAA+SSAA Medium)

One thing I noticed is there isn't an AF setting, I think the game defaults to 4xAF or 8xAF but I enabled 16xAF in Nvidia control panel which fixed everything up.

The SSAO is too strong . There's a visible black shadow outline around everything, looks a bit weird.

bit of a long shot, but i'm looking to see if anyone has a solution for the frame stutter in this game. I just bought it on GMG so I assume it is patched and up to date. Despite the fact that the change log lists fixing microstutter, I still get noticeable camera jitters when travelling at high speeds. It is nauseating.

I have tried: Forcing vsync and tripple buffering through nvidia, forcing vsync through D3DOverrider, disabling vsync and limiting the framerate in game, turning both options off in game and limiting the framerate with Dxtory, and turning off features such as motion blur, shadows and antialiasing.

It's still playable, but I would love for a way to get rid of it.

Are you talking about the shaking camera when driving vehicles at high speeds? It's not stuttering, it's an intentional visual effect. I hated it too, especially since it's very noticeable even at low speeds. I can only tell you to endure it, eventually you'll stop noticing it (and avoid like crazy fast vehicles whenever possible). There's people on the Steam forums complaining about it too.

If you don't notice stuttering when walking you probably don't have it anymore, since it was indeed resolved months ago (then it came back but it was resolved again iirc).

Oh and btw the ingame frame limiter doesn't seem to work, but the one with msi afterburner on-screen display server does. You can try limiting it to 30fps and see if it's less bothersome that way. I had to play the whole game with the limiter on because my framerate was too unstable, from 60 to 40 like it was nothing, so that's probably why I stopped noticing the shaking camera when driving at some point.

That's insane! I can't believe anyone would design such a poor effect on purpose. It doesn't make the car look like it's going fast, it makes the world look like it's shaking. Gives me a headache.

Well. I'll have to deal - my expectations aren't super high since I got this game for 12 bucks anyways.

Vespas all day every day.

Idk what it is, but the games Framerate doesn't feel "low" to me until its in 25s.

This is partly due to the great motionblur... but when I turned it off, the framerate was still great. It seemed to me to be that speed-like camera animation when in motion.

Anyone else agree, or know what I mean?

Yep, the blur compensates wonderfully for the framerate's variance imo. Also, you have to remember the game was targetted for 30 FPS on the consoles.

Is there any way to replace the in-game AA with Nvidia Inspector? Nothing seems to be working.
Nope, not at all. That's speaking from an ATI perspective, though. Inspector may be different, but I have a feeling that because it's using deferred rendering, you can't use anything other than what's in-game (like FXAA :/).
