Man, this final smash looks unavoidable. I don't think it auto KOs though.

I think it would be avoidable if you got onto a platform far enough away from the iceberg. In the New Pork City screen, for instance, there are platforms not hit by the iceberg. Due to the triangular shape of the glacier, I think anything far enough from the center of the screen and high enough would get you away from it.

Grrr...ever since the updates have been bumped up an hour, they've gotten worse. If it means staying up an extra hour for new characters, I'll do it, Sakurai!

Ice doesn’t just make the available ledges smaller and more slippery, but it also damages your opponents!
Hmm. Now I hope there's an ice mode special match type where it's permanently in effect...

It doesn't have to do with time change, it has to do with Sakrai having to streeeetch out updates more due to the delay. If the delay was actually due to more content then the updates would still be on the same course. But its obvious that its not the case.

I missed it, SuperAngelo made a ridiculous bet that cost the thread speculation / hopes of a certain character?

Nice job, pal.

Yeah it kinda isn't fair for the people not involved. Whats that type of government that if someone screws up, we all pay the price? Whatever it is, thats what happened here.

Yeah, we need to make Angelo the thread pariah. Unless we're vindicated.

That makes too much sense for it to not happen.

And MrCheez too. It seems fitting, somehow, that they should be the first to suffer under the new rules.

Thats what I have been preaching about! A slow and painful death for Angelo.

Its not MrCheez's fault! He was swept up by Angelo's charm, good looks, and fast talking. He's but another victim of Angelo.

Angelo, that monster.

Well, besides, isn't the 20th Anniversary not for another month or so?

Why all the speculation now? Makes no sense.

Anyway, much better update than what we've been getting. To the person who said the Final Smash looks unavoidable, I'm sure if you move off to the side and just stay above you'll be fine. Besides, I'm sure the ice berg isn't always dead center.

A mildly interesting update, although it seems a little anti-climactic after all that ban bet discussion.

At least it's another Final Smash out of the way!

Duderz said:

Interesting point, actually. It might come up in the dead center or it might appear relative to the Ice Climbers' location. The screenshots seem to indicate the latter but it's hard to tell since we don't know when these screens were taken relative to the time the Final Smash occurred or, for that matter, how long the iceberg lingers after the Final Smash is executed.

Incidentally, I wonder if you're unable to use this if the CPU controlled partner is KO'd.

-This November 19th marks the beginning of the 27th week of updates, the 130th day of updates, and the 156th update overall.

-The Ice Climbers franchise advances to a grand total of 3 Dojo updates, so it's now tied with Sonic for third-least-represented series--ahead of F-Zero and the Nintendo DS logo, which are stuck at one update each.

-Final smashes have had 16 updates and pull ahead to third-most-common update type, behind stages and character profiles.

-Both this week and last week began with a final smash.

-The known characters without final smash updates are now King Dedede, Lucas, Snake, Sonic, Wario, Zelda, and Zero Suit Samus. (Yes, I know we know what Sonic's is, but it hasn't had a whole update, so brace yourselves.)

-17 days without a character profile update. In times like this perhaps even Rambo and the Contra characters might weep openly without fear of criticism.

I wouldn't worry about this being unavoidable. I mean, they aren't stupid. They wouldn't make a final smash unavoidable. That would be waaay too cheap.

I know it was done is jest from a stupid bet but actually banning a certain discussion from a thread is stupid when the banned discussion didn't actually effect the thread's quality at all.

There was a time a month ago when I was SUPER impatient for every update, pretty much every week there were one or two highlights. Now its all pretty meh, I don't think ill even check the updates for a bit, just to have the quantity make up for the quality.

Not hating on the Ice Climbers, its just that the three month delay really will and already has affected these updates by their mere existence. Being teased for three months before release is fine, but a year? I'm already getting tired of looking at the damn game, its suffering from overexposure.

And we shall weep alongside them.

F-Zero is seriously, seriously due for an update. I'm pretty sure it's gone the longest without an update than any other franchise.

Edit: This is really kind of a depressing update. I mean, it's a pretty lame start to the week and that's bad enough. But now update devotees are losing their faith and sp0rsk sabotaged our discussion.

I knew there was something missing. :( I think just a day or two after the Ice Climbers profile showed up I was hoping the final smash update would reveal this info...

How about we ban mentioning Krystal instead?
No hope for the "instead" part of this, but I guess I wouldn't mind the rest--
--wait, no, how would the Smash Bros. thread keep growing if people didn't have a character to hate on?

Every franchise except F-Zero has appeared at least once since August 20th (that day included). Poor F-Zero, wasting away since July 2nd. I'll keep predicting Captain Falcon, though.

Having played this at E for All, I can say that Samus' final smash seems quite cheap. While it's being blasted your opponents can't move, iirc.

There's still PLENTY to be excited about. Sonic's stage, Snake's final smash, Captain Falcon, the last "mystery" character, various music updates...

Even though the updates will get slow, a slow trickle of info is better than nothing.

When will these lame updates stop? GAF am cry.

I also don't feel quite as excited for these updates anymore. The magic is lost. :(

Captain Falcon is a former secret character and he's specifically has been avoiding showing them off. One can only assume he showed Samurai Goroh before he decided to keep the former secret characters secret on the updates. Who knows when he'll get bored of keeping them from us, but it could be a while.

Even if Samus' final smash was the most broken thing in the game, it's balanced out a bit since she has to become Zero Suit Samus afterward and have a sucky final smash.

...Then again, it's possible Ice Climbers will be balanced depending on what happens to the CPU partner. Where's the info about the final smash of a loner Ice Climber, Sakurai? :(

Here's a question. Let's assume for just a moment that there are "unavoidable" updates or "built in" updates that Sakurai wants to get in before the game launches. Assuming that's the case, based on current information, what would the total number of "unavoidable" updates be that we have left if we just factor in A) Character profile, assuming that each image (including DS) needed a character associated with it (also counting the blank number or numbers and not assuming the images go higher than they are currently) B) Stage C) Music Update (for the stage of course) D) Final Smash and E) Special Moves set.

Obviously this wouldn't tell us everything, it doesn't factor in items, it wouldn't factor in modes. But knowing that information would give us an idea (assuming every weekday till launch gets an update with the possibility they continue updates after the game launches) of how many new characters have at least a possible chance of being revealed.

But when you die you restart as Samus. You can even kill yourself and be up two kills.

Well, all you have to do is get behind Samus when she gets the Smash Ball.

I'm not losing hope for the updates yet. There are still two confirmed franchises that we don't know about yet (I think), a few stages, and maybe even some other random stuff Sakurai seems to spring on us without warning. I'm still staying optimistic for our future prospects. :D

Edit: As far as I can tell, there are three possibilities for a lone Ice Climber:

One, the Ice Climber either can't get the Smash Ball or the attack somehow "fails" when the Ice Climber is alone.

Two, the Final Smash automatically brings back the second Ice Climber. This is unlikely, I think, but you never know.

Three, the loner gets an entirely different Final Smash.

Megaman ban is now in effect.

If you mention anything megaman related, post an image, or have a smash related megaman avatar in this thread, you will be banned for a day.

If you decide to get smart and try to skirt around the rules, you will be banned for a week.

The megaman ban lasts until he is announced (hint, he won't be).

HAHAHAHA.
lol I so knew this would happen.

What makes you think Samus will always be facing in one direction? Once you have the smash ball you can still fight, you're just not allowed to use neutral B because that activates the final smash. I was holding Ike's final smash for quite a bit, and yes I was still kicking ass and not just running the whole time.

But the Final Smash doesn't start instantaneously, right? Assuming there's a bit of lag to start and that the player recognized her Final Smash animation, it's quite possible that someone close enough to Samus could dart to her other side before she can begin the attack.

Or you can just get to higher or lower ground, such as in New Pork City.

I haven't been tracking the special moves, but I can answer the rest of that.

Only if you're playing in Time, and with self-destructs set to -1 instead of -2...

There is a lag but your opponents are frozen in place during this lag. The blast comes out fairly slow but you can't move until the blast fills about half the screen or more. I found this out the hard way because I wanted to know what would happen if Pit's shield went up against her blast.

Basically once you activate a final smash, it activates right away.

Ahh, I see. That actually does seem kind of cheap, when you put it that way. :/

Can Samus' final smash be used when she's in the air? Seems like an odd thing to wonder, but I've never actually seen it used off the ground in videos, so I'm curious.

lol losers

Can we ban Krystal, Items/NoItems, Wavedashing, and Krystal as well?
Or lock this thread from 11 AM - 11 PM Pacific each day.

Yeah, but I suppose it's ok, since you actually have to work for that final smash. You can lose a final smash if you get knocked around a lot while holding it. It is an item after all. So you can consider it a tier item like Starman, I guess. . . except these items basically hand you kills.

And as for Ice Climber, the freezing may just freeze, like how Peach's puts people to sleep. An effective use of Peach's Final smash is when people are airborne outside the platform. They fall asleep in midair and fall to their deaths.

What. :o K*****l and wavedashing I understand, but item debate? You, sir, have gone over the deep end. :( Must be from running Pokemon tournaments that never really--

woah, thanks a lot Jiggy! plus I believe there's one "blank" space for a series, isn't there? so that would be another 5 updates assuming we got that update before the game was launched. So we have, assuming all updates must be completed by game launch 32 (or 37 if the unrevealed series is revealed prior to launch) updates that are probably going to happen.

Don't worry, I gave up. I dunno what happened to temjin. If you and WolfofMebu want to finish up go ahead and report to me. The winner gets the LV90something Modest Rayquaza I got from someone on NSider.

Wavedashing isn't even in the game anyway, so debating about it strikes me as being rather pointless. The item debate seems to have more or less run its course.

But ban Krystal, definitely. We can still hate on Bowser Jr. and Jiggy and I still have Cloud.

There are two blank spaces, #13 and #19, which could get us as high as 42 updates if both of those spaces were covered and he really intended to cover moves/final smashes/stages/music/characters for each symbol...

Interesting thing is we only have 45 days of updates before the Japanese release. Of course, who knows how many of those will be double or triple updates. >_>

Plus I also wonder if we might see a post not dissimilar to his post on all the retro items that were basically the same. I'm thinking that Samus is largely unchanged, Pikachu is largely unchanged, etc so he might cross-post the same type of update for them or at least handle them as a triple update since veterans of melee would be familiar with them anyway and the numbers game gets interesting with every update.
