Just imagine if you went back about 10 years and showed yourself all of these videos of Brawl and said this was a game you'd have to look forward to in the future :lol

Are you nuts? I'd have kicked my ass and taken my time machine and traveled all over time and space. I'd already be playing PS4 & Wii2 by now.

back on the pokemon trainer issue...

couldnt he just simply stand on the platforms in the background?

there are plenty of them, as long as whats-his-face doesnt throw like a girl, he should be able to hop around back there.

Hmmm I think I might go buy SSBM and play it until Brawl comes out.
I was thinking about the same thing, but i already own it.
I figure that if I put in about a month training, I can at least put up with the best smash players on brawl:lol
I don't want the difficulty of online matches to ruin my love for the series.

You should just find some people who are a little below, a little above, or just on par with your skill level... That's where my best and favorite matches always come from, anyway (as opposed to one-sided slaughterfests where I either destroy some noob who's been playing for six months and thinks he's awesome or get destroyed by a real tourney player >_>).

The sad thing is, I don't know anybody who brought the gamecube or even ssbm. Considering the sales of the wii, hopefully there will be many people that purchase this game and go online.
I'm left with the a.i. thats within the game to serve me as some kind of trainer. The specific things I hope to master is: recovering onto the stages, and the controls.

It's a good way to build proficiency with a character, but so much of the advanced stuff comes from reading and anticipating your opponents. Personally, I'm looking forward to getting demolished online, as that will be excellent practice for tournaments.

Hmmm, found something interesting.

The Mother 3 Porky's Theme song is actually from the Mother 3i soundtrack.

It uses the portion of the From Utopia track. Listen from the 1:42 time point here: http://www.goear.com/listen.php?v=017275c
Huh, good catch. That explains why the credits for composition and arrangement were the same.

But now I can't help but browse through other official arrangement albums, wondering what might make the cut for Brawl.

I am too, but the problem with me is that I've been turned off to alot of online games because of the initial difficulty. :lol

I have that problem with FPS games. I'm hoping since I'm more acquainted with Smash, I can do my fair share of demolishing as well.

Personally, I don't think I'll be utilizing the online function that much. I got a regular group of friends I play with, including a bunch of "Serious!" players that I could hit up if I was interested in that type of party.

Between all that, I think I'll be fine. The fact that I stand to own the game for a whole 2-3 weeks before most people on my side of the 'hood will probably help me prepare... :lol

My use of the online function is going to rely mostly on how random the "with strangers" mode is. If it matches by relative skill (win vs. loss or something) then I probably use it a lot more than if it's just completely random.

I wouldn't play Melee until this comes out and saturate myself on the formula to be honest...I mean as much as I love the Smash Series, but I haven't played Melee in maybe 3 years, and don't want Brawl to be too familar if you know what I mean.

I'm kind of the opposite--I don't want Melee to be too familiar when I'm playing Brawl, don't want to get too used to the SSBM mechanics and gameplay speed and everything else when a lot of it will probably get thrown out the window for SSBB anyway.

Also, I have bad memories of suiciding three times in under a minute and a half because the first stage I got put in for SSBM was Yoshi's Island and I kept expecting Kirby's running A attack to be anything other than that horrible, horrible, uncontrollable fireball that sent me through the yellow blocks unto my doom.

At this point, I'm not even sure it is the same "universe". Mother 3 might as well be its own continuity, just like Mother 1 and 2 were different continuities, as well.

Are you sure about that? Now granted, my source here is Wikipedia since I haven't actually completed Mother 3 (I won't until Starmen.Net's translation is finished), but I have read that Ness and his quest are mentioned numerous times in Mother 3. Besides, in Mother 2's ending, Pokey says that he's going to escape to "some other era to think about my next plan". Mother 3's story is probably the fruition of Pokey's "next plan".

The prospects of a new generation of Mother neophytes thinking that Pokey's name is "Porky" saddens me slightly. Now I know how all those people who insist on calling Dr. Eggman "Dr. Robotnik" feel.

What's this notice on the JP site?

"ジャンプフェスタ2008"において、
本作『大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズX』の
体験版が展示されることになりました!!
12月22日(土)、23日(日)、幕張メッセにて。

くわしくは、こちらで。"

Edit: Nvm, just saying it's at jump festa

Why is no one freaking out about late update. Is my internet down and I'm just viewing a cache of old pages?

Oh right. It's Friday night. Well that was 7 minutes wasted.

FF spells will always be Fire 2, Bolt 3, and Cure 4 to me. None of this Fira, Thundaga, Curaja junk. >:(

Random tangent. I'm always just the slightest bit irked by how video game spells and special moves seem to never know that thunder is not the thing that electrocutes you. It's lightning, people. Lightning. Won't somebody think of the lightning? ;_; Not that thunder couldn't have its own great in-battle effects, like intimidating the enemy or paralyzing them with fear or something, but it isn't lightning. :|

Actually, a direct hit with thunder would be pretty devastating, as it's essentially a very localized sonic boom. It'd probably crush most of the smaller, more fragile bones in your body.

But yeah, that always bothered me, too.

aw fucker, i feel stupid for staying up now that i just realized that its friday. oh well, i guess the night isn't a total bust, i got something done unrelated to this...

And it is...but not necessarily in the way you may think. I won't spoil it for you, if you haven't played it yet. :D

Again, yes, but not necessarily as you may think. In the end, Porky accomplished his goal of world domination, but only because he jumped into another timeline/continuity/universe where Ness and pals were far and away removed. In the end, Porky "cheated". Couldn't beat Ness, so he fled away where his red hatted former neighbor wouldn't be a problem. ^^;

Not in the same school of thought, in my eyes.

Phonetically speaking, Porky and Pokey are basically the same thing in JP. So, for all things considered, they're one and the same. It really doesn't matter how you got about "romanizing" it, because both are technically correct.

But it's my general opinion that the only reason we got "Pokey" in the first place was because NoA's Dan Owsen and his translation team probably missed the "intended" meaning for the fat bastard's name (which is an honest mistake, I'll admit). And so, like so many other things when it comes to JP -> ENG efforts, it was just a thing lost in translation that just became a part of tradition, any how.

You know why this is?

When translating the game, especially NES and SNES games, there are text limits on what you can fit in. Translators were afraid that Lightning would get confused with Light in general (not necessarily a spell or element) and no amount of working around it, like Lghtng looked right. Everyone understood Thunder, though.

Pikachu's 100,000 Bolt attack in Japanese becomes Thunderbolt in America because you can't fit that in the space for the move.

Omg I didn't know that 10,000 bolt attack thing of pikachu =0 that was pretty interesting .. u_u I'd choose to say 10,000 bolt attack instead of thunderbolt, sounds more epic

I haven't sent any of the Smashing Live CDs yet. Only 1 person paid me so far. I'll see if I can send that Monday. (I'm taking them with me on vacation)

ShockingAlberto is correct. Fira, Firaga, etc is actually the true naming convention since FF1j. It's just that translators kept the Western naming convention until FFVIII came out, in which it seemed like Square was trying to fancify spell names, when in reality they are what the spell names were actually called for the longest time.

So there's no reason to be attached to Fire 1, 2, 3 other than Western gaming nostalgia. Square did not ruin anything by switching to the Japanese naming scheme.

And most Pokemon names and move names ended up getting changed. I remember watching an episode of Pokemon Sunday News and they were playing English Pokemon Battle Revolution, and as they saw "Close Combat", one of the hosts screamed out loud, "CLOOOOOOOSE COMMMMMMMBATTT!!!" It was great!

I'm tempted to ask you for one since I don't know what happened to mine.

I wonder how they will set-up the Subspace Emissary adventure. I hope it is somewhat similar to like you move along a map instead of just going directly stage to stage so that you can find some secret levels and stuff like that.

I wonder what the Christmas surprise will be then? An item container? Confirmation of holiday variations on the AC level? Christmas NiGHTS? Who knows!

A map for Subspace Emissary has been confirmed for a long time.

Has a Christmas surprise been confirmed, or are we succumbing to hype again. I need to know, my doctor is forcing me to limit my level of disappointment.

Guys, I know what the "real" names of the FF spells are. I'm just saying I don't care. :P

Hmm. Well, that sucks. :(

It's pretty safe to say that aside from possibly Pokemon, this will be the most popular game on the NiWiFi service

I think that is understating it. This game will probably be the highest selling game on the platform, and maybe of the generation if it has legs like I think it will.

Well given what it looks like we'll be getting as a 'Christmas surprise' on the Virtual Console this Monday [DKC3, Blades of Steel, Rolling Thunder 2], I wouldn't get your hopes up for something amazing on the Dojo. Of course, Sakurai is independent of NOA's inability to generate consistently awesome news without filler crap in between, so maybe we will get something.

Just like we were going to get a megaton on December 3rd, right guys? And on Miyamoto's Birthday? And when Coro Coro released on the 15th? Keep hope alive! D:

If you go to the Go Nintendo blog and scroll down, you'll find another Brawl roster de-confirmation.

I'd specify, but I don't want to get banned.
