Well, speaking for myself only, there are three things above all...

One is the freedom of maneuverability for almost all the characters. 2D platformers are my third favorite genre, and they tend to have pretty crazy physics, but I still can't think of any one of them that has anything close to the maneuverability of Smash--you can jump all over the place, double jump all over the place, roll forward and backward and sidestep and dodge in the air, run in one direction and then turn and run in the other without much lag... You really can't get a sense of just how open the controls are from watching a video, but suffice it to say that nearly anything else I play will feel pretty rigid if I'm coming off of Smash Bros.

The second stems from the first: how twitch-based the game is. Because the controls are so simple and the movement is so free, Smash is about as reflex-based as anything--more like a 2D action game than a fighter, almost. How fast can you think, how fast can you react: these are the tests for gamers that I think Smash is most focused on.

Good choices. I forgot to cover this much. And you probably conveyed it in more detail than I would have bothered doing so, certainly. :D

Incidentally, I'm going to break away from Firestorm and Tre and say that the fanservice (other than the music) really doesn't have much to do with it for me.

Sacrilege! :lol

But any way, you do bring up a good point though. The game probably is able to carry itself in a lot of ways beyond the fanservice...I just don't think it would have taken off NEARLY as well without said component, though; but then again, that's my basic argument for all of the "Mario this and that" titles that have come out over the last few years.

I mean, if this was a different time and place, where fighting games were still all the rage, and people would always look forward towards new things besides things that happened to have Capcom characters in it, maybe a "Smash Bros." with a more original roster of characters could have sold well. But I doubt it would have gone over as well as it did in this particular "continuity". :lol

Though it's too late now and won't happen [they'll go with something much more simple] but I'd love a Sonic stage which is based in the "Special Zone" with the level flying between levels based on the Sonic 1 [weird gravity, fish backgrounds], Sonic 2 [Half Pipe], Sonic 3 [Checkerboard Worlds], and other small varieties [The S3&K one with weird gravity and pokies, variants on the Half Pipe throughout the years etc].

It'd work pretty well.

I'm really curious to see what they do in terms of sonic stages for the SSE portions of the game. I'd love to see a revival of the classic 2D sonic platformer/running action.

I think you're right about that: probably millions of people are playing or buying mostly because they love the characters. I'm just not one of them. :D

...Well, I say that in present-tense. I don't think I would have bought the N64 game without Kirby being there (and knowing it was from HAL and trusting them), but by now it's everything else that's keeping me going.

Edit: On a separate note, it's raining. Hope the internets hold out for the return of the statistics Dojo with the four original unlockables and the statistics page!

Anyone know of any cheap time machines I can buy? I need one to get to February, like now.

Ya, but you'll have to bring your own weapons, and I Don't Guarentee Safety.

Tonight's Prediction:
Third Party Character blowout + U.S. and Pal dates final confirmation.

I was wondering if some of you who are familiar with the franchise could give me some insight into what makes it so great. I've seen the videos, I've read about the gameplay, but I must admit I still don't 'get it'. Sure it looks fun, even goofy, but what makes it great?
I've been playing it regularly since the 64 days, and above all, I'd have to say it's just how much meat there is to the game. It's a party game, a platformer (at least with Brawl), and a surprisingly deep fighter all mixed into one. What other game can boast that it can have Charizard throwing a pokeball at Sonic on one side of a stage while Snake and Bowser clash with beam sabers on another. And then five minutes later become a focused and intense game, a battle of wits between two players duking it out in mid air?

Play it, you'll see. :D

Also, which controler would I enjoy using most when I pick of SSBB? I assume the standard wiimote/nunchuck are no good, will the classic controller be worth while (I've been meaning to pick one up anyway), or am I going to want to find a gamecube controller?
Honestly, just make sure you have four usable controllers so all of your buddies can play.

Please be Ridley tonight! A Subspace video of Samus encountering him would rock. I'd assume you'd have to beat him in SE as Samus to unlock him as playable.

Not the same person but...

I dunno why but looking at that picture just got me incredibly hyped for this game. That said, tonight I predict something lackluster, in fact, I'm willing to guess that for the next week we'll already know 3 out of the 5 updates.

You know it's kind of funny -- back in July or August I wouldn't have thought anything of an update for Captain Falcon or Ness since I considered them shoe-ins, but for whatever reason I really want to see a Captain Falcon update. Or Ness, for that matter. Not necessarily because I'm really worried that they won't make it in, but just because I want to see their new looks and find out if any of their moves have been changed.

I don't think we'll be getting anything more than a double update tonight, and I also don't think that we'll be getting anything amazing just because the Dojo has been on holidays for a week. It's a little too early for him to start showing all the unlockables, and if he's got any more megatons saved I would think he'd use them for the 200th update. Still, I'd love to be proven wrong here. :0)

Ness is probably not going to happen.. but Falcon.. man he was a character archetype in SMBM.. its so frustating he is still unconfirmed.. how am i going to hear kirby scream falcon punch..?

I've been having my own little Hitchcock marathon all day. I'm pausing Vertigo to see tonight's update. That's the awesomeness of Smash.

I'm gonna predict a WiFi update - likely something to do with the new commercials which revealed that two players can be play wifi on the same wii.

That's something I had also in mind. Or some other thing we already know through the Jump Festa updates...

Pessimist never gets disappointed ;)

I echo the sentiments about Smash being like an action game. The depth of freedom in this game actually makes me a lot more pissed off at other games when I can't do what I want to do. It wasn't until years into Melee that I really considered Smash a fighting game, before that, to me it was just an action game optimized for multiple people, which is why I was glad they put in Adventure mode and now the Subspace Emissary is coming. The game isn't even about killing your opponents, but rather making ring outs, and the level of customization between items and physics and all sorts of other things make this franchise crazy awesome for me. Heck, Smash 64 was my first game for N64 and would have been my first game for GCN if it didn't come out a month after launch (ended up being my second game).

The update is in less than half an hour and I'm not sure if I should wait for it. I know it's not a character, and I'm hoping it's not an item. The only thing that would make me happy is an interesting How To Play, another cool game mode (although now there's probably nothing left to show), a really long character update (Final Smash updates are great, but way too short, and therefore, forgettable), and finally, another video of just about anything.

Jump Festa update? (You know, can someone tell me if it's spelled Festa instead of Fiesta because it's Engrish or not?)

You do realize that we haven't even gone through all of the E for All updates.

I don't want to see anymore Assist Trophies either. They're a lot like pokeballs for me; half the fun is actually playing the game and discovering them, rather than being told about them.

It's probably going to be someone's final smash. Have they already done Kirby's? I remember seeing a video of him cooking Mario a long time ago.... That's probably it.

i predict some kind of interview, where the staff and developers talk about the "essence" of Smash bros.
hey, they did it for super mario galaxy and twilight princess, which means they could do it for smash bros.
Please Nintendo
:D

Got a tab open for every language and my finger positioned directly above the F5 key!
