First of all, the "Smash-verse" is not specifically tied to any of the other Ninty worlds, though it does utilize some aspects of 'em. Here, the characters are all represented by "Figures" (or "Trophies", in the US version), that basically just do more to represent that character as a whole, as opposed to any one specific rendition from a particular game (unless the case may be where there are characters like WW Link to go along with TP Link, in which case there is a bit more to distinguish).
Therefore, Smash Zelda can change into Sheik, if that's what Sakurai wishes; and it works, because this is Smash Bros, not Zelda proper. It's the same strain of logic that dictates how Jigglypuff's Rest attack can knock you the FUCK OUT, Mewtwo can learn Teleport (when he can't learn it in any Pokemon game), Mario can use the Cape just as much as he uses Fludd, Bowser can turn into Giga Koopa and so many other things that are either just exclusive to Smash, or are just otherwise taking extreme liberties with a character.
Thus, the reason why Zelda turning into Sheik is not that big of a deal. Me not caring about the character all that much not withstanding, the "canon" is the least of the worries for such a decision.
I'm growing more and more curious in regards to the identity of the series that icon #19 will represent, and I wonder what reason Sakurai has for continuing to hide it from us. Since Metal Gear Solid is at #17 and Sonic is at #20 with a first party series (Kid Icarus) in between, it's not necessarily a third party franchise. But if it isn't, it begs the question -- why has it remained hidden so long when additional series' have been revealed ahead of it? Maybe this is just another way of Sakurai teasing us, but I don't think it would make much sense for icon #19 to be a series that remains hidden until post-release. Personally, I have an inkling that it's a placeholder for our third and final represented third party series, and the 200th update (either as part of a multiple tonight or a single/multiple on Monday) will mark its unveiling.
Of course, this prediction is almost entirely based on complete guesswork, but that's fine. If Sakurai does intend to celebrate the site's 200th update though, I'd say a new third party fighter would be an unveiling worthy of such an occasion.
Or because of what Sakurai said. You know, how Smash characters are entirely different from any timeline. They're just trophies representing the character in general. They can have attacks from different games.

yeah, i was thinking the same thing. But i also thought that he was taking characters from specific games, more so the most recent games in each series.
For example:
Mario (sunshine)
Link (Tp)
Fox (starfaox armada)
etc.
I'm going to try to guess something that nobody else is, because a right answer will seem so much more impressive that way. An orange update, regarding one more feature of the Stadium, with a side order of stealth-update-age; namely, "This is the Solo menu" and "This is the Stadium menu" screenshots. I won't guess the second part of a double update because I'd just end up getting it wrong anyway, so I'll leave it at this.
EDIT:

I do, hot stuff Mc. Jiggy, and I bet I could do things with him you wouldn't expect.

But again, you see that Mario still uses the Cape, just as much as he uses his lil water gun (FLUDD). And Smash Fox persistently sticks with his lil saturday night special laser pistol (which got worse in this game), in spite of him getting much better stuff to play with in Assault. And the only really outstanding thing added to Pikachu's arsenal of moves is Volteccer/Volt Tackle, his Final Smash; there's a lot more that they could have added to Pikachu this time around, but Sakurai decided to largely let Pikachu stay fundamentally the same.
And etc., etc.
So, as you can see, newer games and "logical progression" don't always take place as one might expect in Smash. The characters do more to just represent the overall character as a whole, not just the latest rendition.
So it seems like the Sheik thing isn't that certain after all, since from what I've heard the Japanese on the card is 100% illegible, i.e. there's no way Zelda's moves could possibly have been read off that picture. It seems like the translations are actually from text accompanying the scans(on 2chan I think?), so there's no knowing for sure whether or not the specials list is actually authentic. Does anybody have a link to the original source? Do we know that the guy who posted the info is reliable himself?

Regardless, it was mentioned months ago in an interview with the Twilight Princess art director or something, that the re-designs for Sheik and Ganondorf had been submitted to the smash bros team and approved.

I wonder if Jiggy's nightmare is that next day's Dojo update is that the game has been changed to a fully 3D fighting game with Sega Saturn level visuals...
