So 3D is some sort of scam on consumers, right?

Is it just grumpiness about holiday shopping that has people throwing around "scam" so often lately?

it is a scam and totally worthless.

i mean, it does kinda work, but it's just really fucking stupid.

You should see the Imax 3D movies before making a hasty decision. Seeing a big ass shark come right at you in 3D is pretty breathtaking. The same goes for watching astronauts float around on the international space station.

I do think it's mostly a gimmick for content that isn't video games though (with nature documentaries as one exception). In games where it's properly done (Shadow of the Colossus comes immediately to mind) the experience really does change compared to 2D.

Having said that, improved display technology should have come first. LCD panels are still coming out with horrible screen uniformity issues, backlight bleed, poor motion handling, etc. The switch to 3D only fixed (in some cases) the motion handling, while not tackling the other issues at all.

(Plasma is a different story. It's a great display technology that no one wants ><)

I was reading more about this and could the 3D modes make a difference? I used "auto" but the TV has "side by side" and one other one. I assumed those were for multiplayer games but I'll go try those now :p

Some tv's have the 3d images side by side or above and below, if you don't have the right settings it wont be 3d.

If auto isn't capable of figuring out what type of 3D is being received, the TV is broken.

Like I said, I have never paid extra for 3D at the movies and I don't think plastic toy glasses as kid count lol. I guess I have no reference point for 3D. Apparently the game I was playing isn't compatible either.

You should probably go and see a movie in 3D just to find out once and for all if your eyes/brain work properly or not. When you spend the extra money, just remember it's for science.

It's one thing to hate or like 3D but if you can't see the difference there has to be something wrong with the source material, devices or OP.

To me it seems that 3D would allow you to gauge depth more accurately, which seems great for fps games. I would get it if I had more money.

I'm sorry you never saw Avatar op. Say what you will about the plot and acting but it looked damn cool in 3D.

I love Avatar but unfortunately my copy isn't 3D. Not sure how that movie can look any better though :)

ps: Trying Uncharted 3 now

Well, if you already like Avatar on its own you NEED to track down a theater still showing it in 3D, preferably an imax.

Can't you watch 3D trailers on your PS3? My Sony Blu-ray player has a Sony "3D Experience" app with stereoscopic clips and trailers.

Good 3D Devices work fantastic. Even with 2D to 3D conversion feature on my TV I can see fantastic depth etc added to a 2D movie.

It seems the exclusivity of Avatar 3D from when it launbched finally ended because all stores sell Avatar in 3D now

You do realize you have to activate your PS3 to do 3D right?

Go to Settings > Display Settings > Video Output > HDMI > Automatic or Custom (You get many options here)

Now your PS3 is 3D Ready

The way you know is a Black Screen with 3D Info + Health Warning Appears before the Game(s) launch

Also get Super Stardust HD ASAP and have your mind blown in 3D

Yep, huge scam. They're trying to fool people into buying 3D TVs and paying extra to see 3D movies in the theater. Those suckers. They're being duped.

I didn't know different options or choices were a bad thing

Learned something knew today

If I hate it, the world hates it, whoever loves/likes it is a huge sucker

Porn in 3D is fucking Freaky, Lawl!

2 years and you've never so much as happened by a 3DS demo to know whether or not you can see 3d?

If you just keep popping different things into your PS3 and looking at your new screen and going "Nope, looks the same to me lol" then we'll never know if something's faulty or set up wrong or whatever, or if it's really you being legit 3D blind. GO TO A 3D MOVIE lol

I have 20/20 vision. Like I said, Batman just looked shinier but the movie looked like any other blue ray
Your vision is fucked then in the sense that you cannot see 3D. My little brother has the same issue. If the image looks blurry/doubled without the glasses, and not-3D with, then you visually cannot perceive it.

I understand where the OP is coming from. When you hear 3d, you expect the image to POP out or have crazy depth. A lot of movies these days just have minor visual changes, but claim it to be 3D. The Avengers 3D IMO sucked bad, it was deff not noticeable or a game changer.

Umm yeah. Anyways I tried Uncharted 3. It didn't look any noticeably better. Maybe I am 3D blind? lol

I'll try a demo unit at Best Buy next time I go there :p

Did you turn on your glasses?
They are active shutter correct?
Did you charge them? (say overnight once you purchased your display) or are they battery operated?

Cause you can instantaneously tell game is running in 3D
You will get this Pop Up Book Effect

Killzone 3 and COD BLOPS stand out

Sorry, I thought I made the sarcasm obvious.

You can't tell anymore here on GAF, Doritos Pope, my meter must be broken =/

Some truly despise 3D, why I have no clue, they'll just move onto 4K

See if you can find a 3DS demo unit. Crank the 3D slider up and see if it looks like the screen is a window and not a flat screen. It usually looks like the games and menues are behind the screen.

I've played Uncharted 3 in 3D; you'd know it was 3D if everything was set up correctly and you were capable of seeing 3D.

Do you have depth perception in real life? Like if something is coming towards you, can you judge its distance aside from the fact that it appears to be larger or smaller?

Good 3d isn't a simple on/off thing - it's a combination of tuning and hardware to get it where it's comfortable and presents a lot of depth, least for games that's been primarily the case.

GT5 actually taught me quite a lot about adjusting 3d, since it's the only game that exposes both Parallax and Convergence controls in game. With some tweaking I can make the entire scene sink deeper into the set or have some elements on the screen pop out.

A good display is the starting point though, and that playstation panel may not be up to the task of producing quality 3d.

It definitely sounds like you're stereoblind, Cloudy. You will never know real joy.

Or at least, you will never know exactly how far away real joy is.

4K

Yes they are active shutter and no I didn't charge them. I thought they came charged cos the power light comes on when I turn it on. I will charge overnight and see if I'm a total idiot lol

I have the same TV and games.

Batman's 3D feels more like you're looking into a window and into the world. (Can be underwhelming, as I had to look for the 3D)
Uncharted 3's 3D to me felt completely non existent.
Motorstorm seemed iffy, sometimes stuff really popped, otherwise I wouldn't have noticed it.
Avengers 3D is also pretty much not worth it, it barely feels like it's there.

That being said, AC 3 in 3D is pretty neat. OH OH, Shadow of the Colossus is actually pretty fucking awesome in 3D, probably the best game I've tried with it. Crysis 2's 3D is pretty good too. As for movies: Up looks great in 3D and Tron Legacy looks pretty spiffy too as soon as they get to the tron world.

Try downloading the super stardust HD or wipehout HD demos, those games have 3D and if I'm not mistaken, they should be pretty noticeable.

Edit: If the light blinks on your glasses, it's working. Mine had charged glasses out of the box.

Oh yeah, completely forgot Killzone 3 has 3D. It's pretty solid too, I really LOVE the HUD effects. It makes me wish all FPS were 3D.

Oh I did see the pilotwings demo on 3DS when it first came out. I could see that but I don't think I ever turned the 3D off to compare lol

You try COD?

It's decent, not jaw dropping, but sometimes certain things on maps look so fucking weird on it

Like the boat in the middle of the road really standout, your like Holy Shit there's a boat on the street, usually you pass it by not minding or paying attention
(I think it's called Overflow)
