So far this gen: Skyrim = Best WRPG. Xenoblade = Best JRPG.

Definitely getting Xenoblade now that I have a Wii. Waiting for Black Friday for Dark Souls.

Boney, Mother 3 is last gen by all measures.

Shhh He thinks gens are determined by years and not consoles/handheld. Best not to argue. Ihough I guess gens could be determined differently if you want, but meh i'll go by what wikipedia and the majority of people think in this regard.
Since I haven't played either yet I can't really judge them. But for best Jrpg for me it would be Bowsers inside story or TWEWY. As for WRPG....I can't really say, I havent played much of any sans mass effect(if you think it's an rpg blah blah) .

Can't speak for Xenoblade, but I doubt I'll like it more than Persona 4 or FFXIII (Gasp!), especially since I hated FFXII.

Not sure I follow your train of logic. FFXII and Xenoblade have about as much in common as Batman and Cinderella.

I always wanted to play Last Remnant on PC after a bit about it on the Cruncheons (or Borecast back then I guess) podcast talking about some of the rougher battles but I can never pull the trigger.

It's a good port that runs well.

Now the game...that's another story. I mean I am not a jrpg fan at all anymore but that game has pretty much everything that I hate about jrpgs in it. I struggled and grinded about 15 hours of it a few months back but I just haven't been able to go back.

Game awards should have a moratorium of a solid year after release so people can let it sink in and we don't wind up with so many oddities. There's too much... giddiness in this hobby. Also, so my own lists won't make me look like I was abducted by aliens by contrast.

"I like Ghost Trick and Infamous 2"

"What the fuck are those?"

Well I'm gonna say you're wrong and still say it's mother 3.

But Drkirby agreed with me. And he's a doctor!

It has multiple endings and branching dialogue from previous actions. It's a RPG.

Crap, I forgot it had dialogue trees. Huh. Genre definitions fucking suck anyway, so I'm not gonna debate it much :lol

Don't you like Star Ocean 4 too?

No, that's Ultros. I forced myself through it and thought it was pretty mediocre. Dungeons were too long, combat was annoying whenever not doing the sidestep thing I can't remember the name of and I don't think I need to say anything about the story/voice acting/characters (as unintentionally hilarious as they may be). Such a shame too because I LOVED SO3.

Grinding is actually detrimental in TLR, so maybe that is one of the reasons you didn't enjoy it.

Well I just figured they were similar based on combat. Really not a fan of the pseduo MMO style free movement in command based RPGs. Doesn't mean I wouldn't give it a shot and who knows, I might even end up loving it, but that's my impression right now. I'll get around to trying it eventually and hopefully I'll change my mind because I do like the Xeno games and Monolith a lot.

I haven't played much Skyrim (only about 4-5 hours) but the combat alone is already turning me off of the game. Melee feels just as shitty as it did in Oblivion.

I was using grinding in the sense that it felt like a chore to play, not like actually grinding like in most jrpgs :P

Xenoblade wont exist to me until its released in the U.S. Sure I could mod my wii and import but its just not the same.

What exactly changes? I ask because I've imported games all my life and the experience doesn't cheapen or anything for me.

If Skyrim is an RPG, then Dark Souls and Deus Ex certainly are, too.

The solution is nothing is a RPG, because that isn't a genre. The idea Dark Souls and Deus Ex are in the same genre is dumb, the idea that Dark Souls and Final Fantasy 13 are is utterly dumb. Then you have to ask yourself what a WRPG is, because Skyrim doesn't play like Baldur's Gate at all. Maybe this is all too controversial for a thread about jerking off this dude's two favorite videogames.

Are people saying dragons are push-overs playing on Master difficulty? Had to put down the game for school and haven't really gotten the chance to really get into encounters with them.

The stat system is a bit weird, but all you gotta do is follow a few rules.

1.) Don't go out of your way to grind.
2.) Don't fight battles where your morale starts blue.

That's it.

Nah it's actually the opposite. There's been people in the OT bumping up the difficulty when a dragon approaches because on Adept (normal) they can be pushovers, though I have personally been demolished by a couple (but I've demolished some myself too).

Hard to decide what my favorite JRPG was but I think it might end up going to either TWEWY or Tales of Graces f. Really hesitant on the latter since I didn't like the story, characters, or themes all that much.

Conversely, games are inheriently a product of their time and the technology available and affordable for that period. They're not wine. Age is unkind to a lot of games that were fantastic for their time.

Some, like Mass Effect 2, were a product for a shared experience...akin to watching a TV show and talking about it the next day at work versus viewing it years later on DVD after the original concepts have been picked cleaned by lesser talents.

Some things, if you're not a part of at the right time, become lessened through no particular fault of their own.

SO4 has to have one of the worst casts ever assembled in a video game.

Lymle, Sarah, Meracle are atrocious characters, Edge makes Tidus look like John McClane, why the hell does green haired guy do what he does, and Reimi was the only character that seemed decent. Robot dude and scythe guy and dude with laser swords are forgetable. (Baccis .. seriously can't remember the others.

For my vote...New Vegas and Xenoblade. Xenoblade has many flaws but is still the best put together jrpg in years imo.

not to start up the whole kerfuffle about xenoblade again, but last I remember wasn't NoA humoring people by saying they'd be watching the Euro sales? is there anything from that or is the only option for the foreseeable future to just import it?

It's got the best turnbased combat system this gen. You have to both plan how to construct squads, positioning in combat matters, etc, etc. The story is cliched stuff but the combat system makes up for it.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the best wRPG so far this gen.

Dark Souls and The Witcher 2 are my picks. Played both more than 3 times in a row, although I've yet to play Skyrim.

My general trend with Bethesda games is that I have an amazing, wonderful 20 hours or so then I never want to play them again.

No idea what Xenoblade is like, but I have no faith in the modern Xeno series. Loved Xenogears, but Xenosaga was garbage and Xenosaga 2 just looked too horrible for words. Xeno series went from gritty to moe garbage in no time at all.

I disagree.

Honestly I found Skyrim to be a boring mess and Xenoblade while I liked some of the ideas and the battle system was interesting I found it boring as well.

For me personally my favorite wester RPG is Mass Effect 2 (LOTSB is so amazing) and Final Fantasy XIII is my favorite JRPG, loved the battle system and liked most of the characters.

I just like having consistency across my collection. Its a petty thing but i just can't help it.

They have nothing to do with one another. At all. Well, except for that Xeno thing. But that's just the name...

I can't tell whether you're serious or messing around. You're about to be torn to pieces by both wrpg and jrpg fans in a minute though.

Xeno series was gritty? Seriously? Gritty is the word you choose...
Ok breh.

Frankly I don't give a damn if people hate my opinion.

I loved both of the games and can't wait to get both Mass Effect 3 and Final Fantasy XIII-2.
