So...games with ACTUALLY good endings

The Last of Us is by far the best ending I have ever seen in a game. It is just perfect. In fact, even though it is something subjective, I would say TLOU ending is objectivelly the best ending in gaming, because it is simply the best ending the narrative could possibly have. In that sense, I dont think there is a game with a ending so honest to its own entirety.

Other really good endings: ICO, Persona 3, Portal 2, Uncharted 2, Hotline Miami, Batman Arkham City.

Came here to post Lightning Returns as I just replayed it this week, glad I'm not the only one thinking that.

So damn good. Not what I wanted. But what was appropriate.

I figure these threads are good for turning people on to games they might not have played. Sooo showing a turbo-spoiler from the end of an untitled game might not be the best way to handle it!

Yep, Last of Us was so good it made me actively not want a sequel in fear of it fucking up what it just did... And that music cue right after the final word. So good.

I'm going to say Bioshock Infinite as well. I'm a fan of Grant Morrison comics, so I eat the kind of stuff Bioshock was serving right up. Sure, it was a bit info dumpy, but the way it was presented was fantastic. I went nuts after Elizabeth saves herself and Booker from Songbird. Such a sad moment too.

Definitely agree on Bioshock Infinite.

Ending made me appreciate the game as a whole lot more. Its just a damn shame it isnt all that fun to play (the core gameplay). But the way they tied the the entire Bioshock universe with the ending made up for that.

The best in my opinion is The Walking Dead. The last two chapters are just brilliant. Other notable games would be: Unfinished Swan, Journey, and The Last of Us.

The Witcher 3. If you manage to get the good ending, it's immensely satisfying.

Cant really agree with this. Yea the ending itself was awesome but the way you are just back in the world with the timeline set back.....you feel lifeless and a longing to at least see some of the npcs that were with you for the journey.

This is the only game ending that legitimately made me tear up a little bit. Not because it's trying to tug at your heartstrings or anything, but because you grow attached to those characters so much and saying goodbye was rough. Never More was a great song too.

Final Fantasy 4. You get to see about 20 minutes of how all of the characters ended up in their lives. I've seen 6 said earlier in the thread. 6 was disappointing in comparison since the game didn't tell you what the characters lives would be like after.

Most of the time I get tricked and love an ending based on the mood of the sequence rather than the story. I mean, oftentimes I could tear up just hearing a nice-sounding, melancholic song during the credits.

Thinking carefully, the only ending that made me think "wow, the story comes together perfectly in the end" is Odin Sphere's. Everything there is just so tight plotwise and thematically.

How could I forget the GoAT.

No More Heroes was still cool too.

NMH was good, yeah. But that killer7 ending was just...everything suddenly makes sense and it was a huge "holy shit" moment that I don't think Suda will ever recreate. The closest we will ever get is if he releases The Silver Case in English, which might, just might actually help us to understand the ending of Flower, Sun & Rain better.

what were you trying to link to OP?

anyways, Uc2, Me2, Yakuza 3, Uc3 I guess, Me1, LBP2, digimon world 2 I guess, GTA4 (only with the deal ending), GTA vice city, all off the top of my head

I highly recommend these titles if you like a good story:

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons will have you bawling. There is no actual dialogue and the feedback from your controller is interwoven into the emotional finale. Can be played in 1 sitting like a good movie.

The Little Inferno ending will make you think hard about what you just did and how you live your life. It has a fantastic kitchie feel and lets you burn pictures off Facebook.

The first Bioshock has an unexpected twist ending and there are actually 2 possible outcomes for the final cinematic depending on if you harvest Adam or not~ Both may have you crying for altogether different reasons.

I'm currently playing Life is Strange and really enjoying the story, but episode 5 is not due out until Oct. 20th. It is hard for me to endorse an unfinished game; However, if you enjoy the concept of time travel/butterfly effect coupled with pacific northwest imagery and music, LiS offers the player a chance to experience serious topics in a non-heavy handed way through the story of an 18 year old photography student.

The Walking Dead season 2 had something like 5 endings, I think 3 of them are pretty unsatisfying -- but 2 of them in-particular are some of my favorite game endings ever, and end very satisfactorily, to a point where I absolutely don't want a season 3.

My personal favorite is the one I saw on my first playthrough, when Clem and the baby enter the refuge, only to have to reluctantly leave Kenny behind, it's a really fitting end to Kenny's character arc, he gives you his hat, and wands off into the vast nothing, a redeemed man. It's funny really, because the game seems to push the 'shoot Kenny' ending as the only real way to stop Kenny from being completely crazed by the end, which is odd, as the 'go with Jane' endings were really quite average, compare that to the 'Leave Kenny at the last possible minute' ending, which made me tear up, it affected me more than killing him would have.

The other ending I, the one where Clem is alone with the baby, she covers herself in guts, and wanders towards the herd, cut to black. It's really powerful, the final shot in particular stands out to me, it's fantastic. More ambiguous than the 'go with Kenny to refuge' ending, but very, very strong.

But The Last of Us... it's perfect, literally perfect, I don't think there is a single problem with that final scene, the performances, the swell of music before the tension is capped by the credits, the editing especially, the timing of the "Okay" and cut to black, it's fucking flawless -- I dare anyone to try and pick it apart.

I felt the Witcher 3 had a very satisfying ending (given the choices I made). I think because the game is so big with so much to do combined with the fact that both the story and characters are so very very well written, interesting, intiguing and well crafted that when it's all said and done the finale feels very conclusive and fitting. The whole journey of that game was immensely satisfying, making all those choices, slaying all those monsters, weaving through the war torn political landscape, meeting all those characters, finally finding and helping Ciri, plus watching the relationship between Ciri and Geralt unfold, grow and reinforce itself over and over again was just about the best gaming experience I've ever had. 11/10, would complete contract again. Can't recommend it enough, my GoTY so far considering I doubt anything else will come even remotely close to usurping it.

Wolfenstein: The New Order also had a pretty solid ending as well. Then again that whole game consistently exceeded my expectations left, right and centre. Great cast of well written and well acted characters, original and engaging story, plus the tremendous gameplay that made mowing down hordes of Nazi scum feel very enjoyable and pleasing. Hope the rumours of the sequel are true!

That... is sort of presumptive that MGS V left "everyone" with a bittersweet feeling. I quite enjoyed the story. To answer the actual question though I'd say Akiba's Trip 2 since it was the last story based thing I played before MGS V.

P4's ending got me so fucking hard man. It's not particularly deep, but it's emotional. You've lived there so long and now you're sayin' good-bye.

I acutally surprisingly liked Witcher 3's ending too, even though I got one of the "not good" ones. I found two of them to be pretty satisfying.

I also thought Ghost Trick had a satisfying "twist" ending.

Shit yeah, forgot Max Payne 2, another really good one.
Also Drakengard 1 is like the opposite of this topic. Every ending is just a giant troll. lol.

I also forgot Fatal Frame 3/Project Zero 3 has an absolutely amazing ending that ties together the entire story in a really satisfying way.

Corpse Party: Blood Drive's ending is one of the most wholly satisfying trilogy cappers I can recall.
We're still 3 weeks from people being able to experience it, though.

Shenmue 1
Shenmue 2
Grim Fandango
Persona 3
Persona 4
Danganronpa 1
Steins;Gate
Broken Sword 1
Chrono Trigger
Monkey Island: LeChuck's Revenge.

I'll throw in Shadow Hearts 2 in there, but only if you've played Shadow Hearts 1.

Most recently though, Danganronpa 2.

Lightning Returns. Beautiful FMV, perfect ending.
That ending was essentially Nomura making Lightning talk to the camera, possibly to himself. On top of a ridiculous convoluted storyline involving the Goddess constantly making up rules for kicks.

These on the other hand.
A scene straight out of the books, fantastic way to do a prequel

An amazingly bittersweet ending.
