So how does this Wii Zapper actually work?

So, the Wii Zapper makes shooter fanatics who accidentally bought a Wii (like me) happy that Nintendo also thinks about making more shooters.

I watched a movie of someone showing RE: Umbrella Chronicles and it looked great. But I have a question.

Is it only a plastic peripheral or anything else? Because I hear people talking about "Bla bla, this game supports Wii Zapper" and I was thinking: why should you support Wii Zapper in a game if you only have to put your Wii mote and nunchuck in a plastic thing? Can we play all shooters with Wii Zapper or what?

I think the only problem is when there are some movements you have to make with the nunchuck and Wii mote. But I would LOVE to play Scarface with it, for example.

The way your Wiimote works actually, exactly the same but it keeps both the dongle and the remote in one place.

And yes it is stupid to say a game supports it

Ok thanks. :lol

The only thing a game should do then is not do things where you have to make nunchuck movements and wii mote movements independently.

Actually in the capcom showcase vid they had the nunuck out of the shell.. No idea if they just hadn't put it in yet though. But I guess it would be stupid if you could take it out then what is the advantage of even having the shell. It will be the exact same config as without a shell.

It's a plastic shell. Stuff like this shouldn't even be worth the word "peripheral".

It's only $20... which is close to the price of the Wii remote itself... either they loose a lot on the Wii remote or... well, make quite a bit of money on each zapper sold ;).

Nintendo couldn't possibly make a shitton on each accessory, :D

Yeah, I made a thread on this a few days ago, and it does indeed seem to be just a piece of plastic. Nothing more.

Which is a damn shame. They should've added some real functionality to it.

I don't get it. The Zapper is making you emulate the grip of a machine gun or a Tommy-gun, right?

The default weapon in most shooters is a handgun, so why the fuck would I hold a handgun like I hold the Zapper? It doesn't even make sense!

Isn't it so stupid! Gah!

you can turn the reticle off in ghost squad

Cool, then it must be 1:1. Does it have a calibration screen? I wonder if you'll have to recalibrate every time you move or pass the controller to somebody else.

Not really, you could have games that were designed with the Zapper in mind. Though the zapper isn't really necessary, it's compatible at least.

On the other hand there's games like Metroid Prime 3 which doesn't work with the Zapper, since it uses the motion sensors in the nunchuk... unless you detached the nunchuk i guess.

I don't like look of the Zapper the way they designed it, i expected it more like a handgun or rifle, but i'll leave my opinions till i get to try it for myself.

Sadly, a third party has already taken care of this. Similar to Nintendo's crappy plastic shell, except it's shaped like it should be.

Yes, the current Wii pointer implementation is not universally 1:1. You need something that lets the Wii know the size of your TV, which would be accomplished by putting infrared LEDs on the top two corners of your TV and inputting its aspect ratio (widescreen, 4:3).

I think a Wii update could allow for such a sensor setup to exist, since the technology in the wiimote is just a camera.

The zapper is a housing for your nunchuk and wii remote. It doesn't much else than that. It's doubtful you will be able to aim down the "barrel" of it and shoot with much accuracy.

So basically Ghost Squad lets you turn off the reticle but doesn't provide the kind of gun goodness that a GunCon title provides. In fact, it's going to be sloppy and inaccurate.

You can do it with almost perfect accuracy by using a calibration screen akin to the one in TP. You will have 1:1 aiming as long as you do not move significantly from the spot you calibrated at.

A Wii remote is 40 dollars...which is twice the price. Hardly "close".

It seems odd that Ghost Squad would allow you to disable the reticle as the actual arcade game itself uses one (a rare thing for light gun shooters). It was for that reason that I believed the game to be a good fit for the Wii.

I expect the "almost perfect" part is the issue. Followed by "as long as you do not move significantly from the spot you calibrated at". e.g. by standing up or sitting down, going to the toilet, leaning forward or anything else that unglues you from where you calibrated the game.

With the move to high-definition displays in light gun games, more and more games are using the aiming reticule, as they are using the same technology in their guns as the Wii uses with its sensor bar set up. Its more of a rarity now to see new games not use an aiming reticule rather than it is to see them use one.

With that said, I do think its incredibly odd to have Ghost Squad provide the ability to remove the aiming reticule. Anyone have a link to where they said that? Ghost Squad wasn't balanced for a perfect 1:1 gunplay... Even in the arcades. I'm not quite sure how well that'll work for the game on the Wii.

Or handing the gun to your friend who is sitting on the other side of the couch.
