So I can finally max Crysis...

Runs better too.

Crysis 1 was a combination of being ahead of it's time and not being able to account for hardware improvements properly needing to brute force it's way since release years and years later. The Crysis 2 DX11+Maldo mod looks and runs better on my same rig than Crysis 1 did maxed out; i7 970 Hexacore+ GTX 580.

Crysis 2 squandered a lot of the original's performance-killing features though - features which actually affected gameplay instead of just looks. Things like much more massive open levels, dynamic destruction of foliage / huts, much more advanced AI which could navigate around all that destruction, etc.


Sure Crysis 2 might "look" better, but looks are not the only reason why the original Crysis was far ahead of its time. It also presented encounters that I've rarely ever seen (especially not in Crysis 2 and 3)

Yeah. The AI was really downgraded to be able to be used on the consoles.

I remember playing Crysis 1 after C2 because I didn't have a PC to make it justice, and wow, C2 was bad. C1 was fun and challenging.

C2? I found how to cheese the AI so it became easy.

Pretty sure this is all on Crytek.

Crytek is the epitome of delusion and squandering of their own potential. They had a hit in Far Cry and Crysis. Both of them sold really well, and both of them made a profit, despite the fact that they were both exclusive to the PC.


Crysis could have sold even better, but Crytek fucked up their own PR at every opportunity.
  • They didn't quell concerns about the type of computer needed to run Crysis enjoyably despite the fact that a $200 GPU and a moderate CPU at the time could handle it on medium settings very well.
  • They should have called "Medium" settings "High" or "Very high" instead since that's exactly what they were compared to every other game out there
  • They complained about piracy endlessly and constantly attacked their legitimate userbase with intrusive DRM and insulting language instead of rewarding their legitimate customers and celebrating their profitable success
  • Their delusions convinced them to go to consoles for their next games, thereby giving up the advantages they did have. They thought they deserved Call of Duty success when they never really have and few other companies have ever done so.
  • Their budgets ballooned because developing for consoles is fucking expensive (not cheap to optimize / cut down games to squeeze them onto underpowered hardware)
  • Crysis 2 sold much better than Crysis, but not *enough* better to make it a success like the first Crysis was
  • Crysis 3 sold worse, because it just wasn't a very good game

And now we are where we are. A victim of their own delusions as they continually ignored their strengths (open-ended sandbox gameplay, technical prowess), and instead played up their weaknesses (storytelling, more linear levels, console development)
 
It'll take time, but we'll see it.

Really doubt that honestly. The effort required to do it for the small amount of people that can take advantage of it just isn't worth it.

That being said, I love looking back at games like Crysis. We usually get a PC game a few years or so into the new generation of consoles that gives us a taste of the future and it's always incredibly interesting to me to look back and see what kind of technologies were being utilized to make these things. Doom 3, Half-Life 2 and Far Cry were more examples of that but Crysis...man.

There are certainly prettier games on these new systems now but this thing came out in 2007 and would look right at home on the PS4. It's ridiculous.
 
Ah Crysis, the one game that actually killed a gfx card.

I still remember the loud whine, pop, and dark screen, and my absolute disbelief that such HOT GFX had executed my beloved PC.

Worth it though. What a shame about the sequels, i had to force myself through 2.

This thread prompted me to load it up again and, lo and behold, it's actually playable at 4k now. Not 60fps but if I cap at 30fps it can be done at the highest settings. It looks insanely crisp downsampled from 4k to 1440p, I must say. FINALLY getting results on par with the non-playable screenshots people were making years ago.

It's obvious that some of its visual elements are now out of date and could be improved but, on the whole, it's still a stunning game and was way ahead of its time.

I'm not convinced on this point. The AI in Crysis was never its high point. It was very common to find AI opponents performing strange actions or getting stuck on things.

Honestly, AI has always been a huge point of weakness for the series.

I do think Crysis 1 is the best of the bunch and one of the best shooters ever made but it really needed better AI. It was either completely oblivious to the player OR too aggressive - there was no middle ground and it wasn't all that fun to toy with them. Enemies in all Crysis games are simply too black and white.

What?? I thought it was one of the worst looking games when dropping everything to low. Everything at max though is the complete opposite. Still amazing looking and now should be completely playable with today's hardware

Ha ha, actually, seeing that does at least remind me that Crysis was a massive improvement over Far Cry from an AI perspective. The AI in Far Cry was simply dreadful. Compared to the original Halo or, the next year, FEAR it was a complete joke. It actively ruined the game for me.

Now THAT I can't agree with. Unlike Crysis 2 and 3, I actually think Crysis 1 on low is downright ugly. Nobody wanted to play on low for that reason.

Crysis had huge potential, unfortunately it was taken the opposite way.
