So I grew out of Nintendo age

Meh, some things chance while others stay the same. It happens with just about everything. No big deal.

I'm 31 and still loving classic game designs as well as new ways to tackle the games.
If there's one thing I have grown out of it's violent games for the most part.
Violence and brutality is in many cases (not all mind you) used to hide mediocre game design, or simply to attract kids who think they are cool when playing so called "mature" games, even though those games could be seen as "kiddy" themselves.

The sad part is that a topic like this will do nothing but attract every "anti-Nintendo" fanboy with half a brain on here to spew their hate and stupidity for everyone to see.

Actually, Nintendo were responsible for getting me back into gaming! After RE4 came out in early 05 and blew my socks off, i became really bored with gaming up until around the time Twilight Princess and Wii Sports came out, and now I'm hooked again.

I really don't see how someone can 'grow out' of Nintendo franchises. On the outside they may seem immature and childish, but try to get anyone who likes 'mature' games like 50 Cent: Bulletproof to finish a game like Zelda. They will most likely fail and fail hard.

Besides, Nintendo franchises still kicks ass. Mario and Smash Bros. just had their best ever games in their respective franchises, and those Twilight Princess and Metroid Prime 3 games weren't so bad either. And by that, i mean they were completely awesome.

I hate violent games unless they are great (e.g. RE4) and I still love Disney movies (I remember I once thought I was too old for them - that was when I was 5).

Nothing to do with cuddly characters, but I realized I paid 47 Euros for Mario Kart Wii and I could have just loaded Double Dash and would have had the same fun (or lack of it).

It is not that bad with the other franchises, but it is similar.

Am I the only who finds the concept of growing out of something "kiddy" at the age of 40 quite funny?
just that the kiddyness isnt the main reason. just realizing playing the same game again is not more fun for me only because now I can control it with some strange free floating wheel (though it works fine)

I love this thread because not only did it tackle a big problem about Nintendo but it went into great depth about why

I found the problem. Fricken RE4 is that damn good. I'm still playing that game and it prevents me from even getting close to tackling SMG. But hey, then again, I'm playing the hell out of Tanks from Wii Play. That's a lot of fun.

It sounds like you just don't like Mario Kart Wii much. No need to sell your system over that surely.

But eh, it's your money, do with it what you want. Go find another hobby to divert your attention with. Bonsai tree growing is popular I heard!

I agree. Wii's first party offering are top notch. SMG, Zelda: TP, and Mario Kart Wii just oozes with quality. Makes playing game "FUN" again! I got tired of the PS2 and Xbox where the games are nothing but expansions or upgrades. Take Halo 3 or FF's for example, same old...with better graphics and new storyline. I couldn't keep myself interested playing the same crap over and over again...bunch of snooze fests.

So yes, I'm having a blast with the Wii. I applaud Nintendo for bringing quality/fun gaming to the market!! :)

oh i see, you said with better graphics

and who exactly are you agreeing with?

it's always sad when a brotha leaves us

there, there, we will all meet before the great mystery...

My point is, it's not so much growing out of them, it's getting bored of them. Growing out of them suggests you're too old to play the games.

I'm only 20 so maybe it's different for me, but I love Nintendo's first party titles, Galaxy was so amazingly designed, the production was just stunning. The Wii games generally look like ass, and Nintendo seem to allow any old turd out on their console. But Nintendo themselves still produce some amazing software.

I think if someone prefers Sony or Microsoft this generation who loved Nintendo every generation so far, it's more a state of where the companies mindset's are at, as appose to any sort of maturity in the design. Wii is a last gen console in terms of spec, and it naturally feels behind the others because if you just look at Mario Cart next to GT5P you're instantly going to think Sony are light years ahead. But it's just that Nintendo have decided not to progress in the same predictable manner.

NES was my first console but I moved to Sony with the PS1 and have stayed with them since, but Nintendo still blow me away with their first party development.

I have a Wii, I have 5 games on it, which may have been as well be on GC, I do not plan to buy anything on it in 2008, but I still have hope for the future

In the meantime, I will enjoy my ps3

I actually sold my Wii to buy a PS3. I bought it to play Zelda: TP and enjoyed that game. But no so much as Windwaker. Afterwards, games like Excite Truck, Wii Sports and Super Mario Galaxy just left me cold. I admire what Nintendo has managed to accomplish gameplay-wise, but the games just don’t appeal to me. Maybe it’s my age (30). But running around in colorful cartoony worlds collecting stars while making happy blieb blieb noices are just not my thing any more.

Maybe I’ve become a graphics whore. But I like realistic graphics and adult gameplay. I loved Uncharted, Orange Box and CoD4 recently.

Leaving the stupid thread title aside (that's just asking for trouble) I can understand where you're coming from. I'm a longtime Nintendo fan (since the NES) but I haven't bought a Wii yet (no other next gen system either). I'm not a fan of Multiplayer games and the SP games seem too few. I'm also tired of playing with the same characters over and over again, as much memory as they hold.

If only Nintendo would release more new franchises for core gamers. I don't have anything against wii sports or fit, I think they are well done products (or going to be in the case of fit), but they are not the new franchises I want to play. And when Nintendo releases a new franchise, most of the time it by some off studio, from a B or C grade team. Like in the case of Disaster: Day of Crisis, a game like that would never get my EAD Tokyo or some other of the AAA internal Nintendo team. It gets made by some aquired RPG maker who isn't exactly known for making thrilling action titles. You can also tell by the lack of media/hype for games like that that Nintendo doesn't really care about them, they're clearly treated like the stepchild of the Nintendo family. I actually surprised Nintendo is still making them, prolly because they know that they only get shitty ports from third party developers.

Completely disagree about R&C TOD compared with SMG. Though I do enjoy both, there's no comparison between the two; SMG is easily better on every aspect. I would go so far as to say that SMG's graphics please me more so than R&C's does, even accepting the fact that SMG is jaggy filled and low res (plus i'm playing on a 40" 1080p screen).
There's just something about the design behind R&C that leaves it feeling a bit cheap, I'm talking about the level design and how some of the challenges are designed, especially the shitty space shooting parts. Insomniac bring out games in a yearly cycle, I would tell them to take longer on them cos they need the work. I feel that even Uncharted had better platforming elements in it (for the very small amount there was) than R&C does.

I also just want to point out that I grew up the opposite to some of you guys, I've always been an FPS gamer with Doom, Wolfenstein and playing many PC & PS1/2 games, RE etc and I guess stuff that people would wrongly call 'mature'.
With Nintendo's game's I've only had tasters of them from playing at friends places on their Snes' and N64's. The 1st Nintendo system I ever bought was a GC and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I guess whilst some of you are getting tired of Nintendo's games and ideas, I've been getting tired of playing other types of games and find that the design that Nintendo is putting into their stuff, no matter how far apart they are released is just top quality.

People always want to try new and different things, just because you feel that you 'grew out of' Nintendo's games doesn't mean that other's can't still enjoy them and that they're somehow now too kiddy for you because you're older.

You can get tired of playing certain types of games, watching certain types of films and listening to a certain type of music all the time and want to try something new and different. It's perfectly fine, what you don't need to do however, is make a thread about it and infer that these things aren't for you any more as you're now so mature.

Quertz67, are you telling me that you, Quertz67, the biggest Nintendo fan in the history of history, don't really like Nintendo games anymore!?
Well I never!!!....

Also like how you "grew" out of Nintendo, effectively stating Nintendo is kiddy.

Other then that, I don't understand some of the things you say in your OP. In the second paragraph you say games like SMG amaze you, and that R&C should learn things from it. In the third paragraph you say that R&C is just as fun as SMG, and that SMG is essentially "the same old thing".
I'm pretty sure you could explain the difference you mean, but it isn't really clear going by your post.

This.

The real problem with Nintendo is their reliance on the same old characters franchises and they way they repackage the same game for every new console. Whenever the successor of the Wii is released, I already know 95% of the lineup just by looking at previous N64, Gamecube and Wii release lists: a new Zelda game, a new Super Mario game, a new Super Paper Mario, a new Mario Kart, a new Mario Strikers, a new Mario Party, a new Mario Baseball, a new Smash Bros, a new Metroid Prime, etc etc. The only new franchises for the Wii are non-games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

This is just one of those "I used to be the biggest Nintendo fan but" threads isnt it?

:lol Ignoring the lies on your post (repacking of the same game and Wiifit being the only new franchise), the reason Nintendo keeps using those franchises is because they've been successful for 20 years and people still want them, if Sony had them they'd probably do something similar like "repacking" them every two years and making racing-based spin-offs...oh wait.

Nintendo is fine. You just have to buy their console about 4-5 years into the generation, that way you can pick up all their AAA titles for 20 dollars and you won't be bothered by the rather longish "droughts" that happen on their consoles.

That longish drought is because people like you choose to take this retarded option.

Don't complain about a drought if you're the fucking reason for it.

I too don't understand the whole "selling/buying/rebuying" concept. If you add it up, you're losing money. It just seems silly.

he loses money, others make a good deal. The stupid loses, the clever guy wins. Fair trade.

And the best part is that a new PS3 hasn't got full BC, so you couldn't even play good PS2 games if you wanted to.

Yeah, 80GB incoming and all that, but I do not really believe...

Wow... this thread is going down the shitter fast.

I am 27 year old so far, and still liking Nintendo games as much as i did when i was a kid. Maybe that will change, but i doubt it.

Pretty much my reaction to the thread title and poster name. I was ignoring the thread until I realised you people are happy to keep feeding him.

Holy crap, I'm on NeoGAF?

Sorry, I thought I stumbled upon like, a Hallmark presents: TV Movie of the week.

"A struggling man entering a mid-life crisis grapples between the the tough decision of abandoning the childish adventures of a plumber from the past, in lieu of the exciting world of a small yellow rat who shoots everything with bazookas."

I don't think I'll ever grow out of Nintendo. Maybe video games, but I'm 28 and going strong. I love the Nintendo universe.

Funny how the original poster keeps posting threads about growing out of Nintendo. I guess he's had a lot of melo dramatic growth spurts lately!

For me, I don't understand how you could complain about Nintendo having stale games when the competition is basically pumping out the same thing over and over. Resistance, Halo, Gears of War, J&D - what's so new about those? I mean, everyone's releasing the same thing they've been releasing for multiple generations. They're capitalising on key franchises. But then Nintendo comes along with the DS/Wii combo, a ridiculous risk and questionable decision, and strikes it rich - but still everyone complains. What the hell do you want?

Listen, I don't want to start a war here, but how has Nintendo not freshened up their act more than everyone else?

Oh now that is my type of ownage brother gamer!

3D Nintendo offering can be iffy at times but I tell ya this much if they made artistic 2D games, platformers and such again like they use make I could play them for next hundred years. I dont get bored with well thought out magical games like snes era ones. Its shame not even NSMB really went this route though.

You're taking Quetz67 (and by extension, most of the people that spew this bullshit) far too seriously.

yeah... I have a 360, and I love games like Bioshock, Halo 3, etc... but what exactly makes the gameplay in these games any more "adult" than the gameplay in Twilight Princess or Super Mario Galaxy? If anything, the gameplay in Nintendo first party titles is usually more varied and complex.

Something like that for me too. I don't really play games anymore apart from stupid online shooters sometimes, but whenever I take the pad...I mean, the controller, it's for playing a chidish zelda, a infantile mario, or a teenage zelda. Serious business in gaming is boring for me, apart from special gems like RE or even Eternal Darkness.

I think the funny part of this thread for me is that I'VE grown out of Nintendo in a matter of speaking; I don't have the compulsion to play video games because the weather is getting warmer and I don't want to be stuck in front of the TV.

Shooting is cool man. It's much more adult. I don't want to be embarrased by playing kiddy games, you know. Just look at Mario, how kiddy is that!? Eating muchrooms and flowers to throw fireballs and jump on turtles. That's like a drug trip or something....wait....drugs are cool.................................Mario is all right!!!

I'm so mature.
