So I want to buy a Kindle

There's no time like the present, I say.

I got my kindle a few weeks ago and am already half way into my 5th book.

I just wished it told you what "page" you were on.

This is definitely annoying. However, MY big pet peeve is you can't "nest" collections. I know it wasn't all that long ago they added the ability to HAVE "collections" but it'd be nice to, say, have a category like SciFi or Fantasy, or a particularly prolific author, and then break it down by either author or series from there.

Like how the book on the screen is talking about Toronto yet it won't be available in Canada.

So good Amazon, so good.

Not much deviation, just some fine tuning it appears from the hardware aspect. Which is fine with me. I assume the contrast will be a little better too, since it was boasted about on the DX.

I was fortunate enough to receive a Kindle 2 as a gift a week or two ago. I told a buddy I was in the market for one, and he gave me his. Said he never used it. I was very close to buying one. I'm glad I didn't because I would have been pretty pissed a newer, cheaper model was available a month later!

Dodged a bullet! :lol

decent update. nothing mind-blowing in the specs.

best thing about it is the $140 wifi only version. that’s priced to move.

It's cool on my end because I can upgrade and use my Kindle 2 as a Christmas gift for my brother.

How big is the 6" screen? What are the width and height of it? Just want to compare to some physical books I have. The $140 new kindle is tempting.

BUT IS IT BETTER WITH PDFS???

That's the sticking point for me.

I suppose the WiFi version can be used in Canada without any problems, correct?

resolution is 800 x 600 (same screen dims as old screen).

so, 3:4 aspect ratio. same as old school monitors, but rotated vertically.

Anyone here use their Kindle to read PDF's?

I read a lot of tech related pdf's and would like to get a kindle, anyone care to share their experiences?

Sure, it's not good.

I mean, they look great on a kindle DX with the 1:1 ratio and the whole thing on the page, but you can't easily skip back/forward and I ultimately find it frustrating.

The last listenable geekbo xwithout liang post pax actually made me want a kindle as while I'm reading a lot of mags/web/PDF... Etc. I find the text cability to be not so good for a long read.... Anyone with both an ipad and kindlencare to comment on the difference in usability and experience?

That is some ultra-responsive e-ink. The new tech is a noticeable jump.
It really is nice. So weird because it doesn't even seem like a screen at all. Just seems like liquid paper :lol Sometimes the name of the tech nails it on the head and E-Ink is just perfect lol

I got a K3, but am sending it back.

The thing doesn't work outdoors in sunlight. I guess it overheats (that seems to be the theory going around) and the page turns become very very slow. Like from half a second or whatever to several, and some ghosting on the screen.

Every time I contacted CS, they just sent me a form letter to call CS. Which doesn't do me any good because I don't have a regular phone (yes, I'm weird, but I just have one of those pay as you go things, and I don't want to charge it up just to call customer service)

edit: and the epic "Holy Cow, Don't Take your K3 outside" thread

Got one of these a few weeks ago and I'm still astounded with it every time I use it. I love the fact that I can read my books on my terms (size, words per line etc).

I got a K3 about a week ago. I've noticed some minor ghosting (for me it's tolerable) when panning across a PDF page, but nothing that lasts after an actual page turn. I've had no problem reading it outside, but if the problem is overheating then an October day in Ohio probably is the best test.

Anyways, I love the device. Reading from e-ink is exactly as satisfying as reading from a page, and the Kindle has some perks that arguably make it a better reading experience than a codex overall. I don't think I would want to use it for a book with lots of diagrams or reasons to flip around, but maybe it's better for books like that than I'm giving it credit for.

One little annoyance I have though is how it shows popular highlights from other readers. Is there any way for me to turn that feature off?

Yeah. Settings.

Kindle overheating?
I can't imagine my kindle heating, let alone overheating.
And for what it's worth (which admittedly is not a lot) I used my kindle in over 100 degrees weather with no problems.

So I got a new Kindle 3; it's really awesome, although I have some complains.

Why the thing doesn't read .doc documents is a mystery to me... To get free books from amazon (ain't paying for books, I only read books from the 1800s :lol ) you need to put credit card information, so I just download everything from project gutemberg, then update the information and put it through USB.

The PDF reader is usable; you can make notes, and the most important thing is that you can zoom in (works like the web browser). Also the resolution is very good, so you can read a PDF, but it can be a bitch to do so while zooming because you need to scroll the window left and right with the arrow thingies. If you used a Kindle DX, you wouldn't need the zoom to read, so that is a great device for pdf files.

As for all the iPad discussion; I've used one, and I must say that it is really impressive for reading, I was really surprised, much better than traditional LCD screens; but the battery life (which is very good for a device like that) of less than a month, the price, the weight and the size make it not usable to me.

In the end I'm really happy with it (although I'll have to import the Kindle cover because they don't sell it here =( ); the web browser is kind of buggy (hint: don't use it, it will replace nothing) and I still have a lot of features to try (like instant tweeting anything I'm reading or commenting, text to speech, etc).

OK, now I'm using Kindle to read manga... although the process is a little painful (download manga, transform it with mangle, copy to Kindle in a folder that MUST be named "pictures"), the result is really awesome.

Maybe he's thinking of selling ebooks and doesn't want them to get pirated!....right?
There are plenty of streaming sites offering everything amazon has for free. Why should consumers pay anymore when they can just type in "free streaming books" in google and be on their way?

Circle of life completed. :lol

It takes forever to get an account on NeoGAF. Presumably you were reading the site during the time you waited for your account. In all that time did you never once read the FAQ?!

I suggest you edit your post, pray for the best, and go read the FAQ :).
