So I'm playing Resident Evil: Code Veronica X

....and it's really good!

I've been really getting into the RE series lately. I played through REmake, Re2 (2019), and RE4 before diving into Code Veronica. I'm playing the emulated version on PS4.

So right up front, the tank controls (and frankly the UI in general) are....not the best. Even if you ignore the tank movement, the game feels old. There's no way around it. But if you haven't played before and you're interested, the good news is you will get used to it very quickly. Within the first 20 minutes things start to feel fairly natural, though still not amazing.

But if you do commit to acclimating to the controls, you're rewarded with an excellent, classic RE experience. Liked RE and RE2? You'll really like Code Veronica. I came into this game just after finishing 4 (which I also enjoyed) but it felt like a homecoming to get back to a puzzle focused, resource constrained RE. And the story arcs are actually interesting, which I didn't expect. And the dialogue is B-tier enough to be...idk, endearing?

So this is just a thread to talk about RE:CV, and to encourage those who either just haven't had the time to play it, or have been intimidated by the old fashioned nature of the game.

Please spoiler story points, as I'm near the end but haven't quite gotten there yet.

I actually prefer the old tank controls and the locked cameras of Veronica and the original RE titles. I just feel that the games were able to create more "horror" moments, if that's an understandable way of describing it, with that old setup. The old camera combined with the extremely limited ammo supply could really make walking around a corner feel dangerous.

A very unpopular opinion, I know.

I had a great game with this game back when it came out on Dreamcast. I wasn't a big fan of the original RE3 but I loved Code Veronica. It felt like the proper evolution for the series at the time. Everyone loves to hate on Steve but I loved the straight up camp it was ridiculous.

I got into the story and reading the documents in CV much more than I did when I first played RE1-3. It may be unpopular but I always thought RE2 and 3 didn't deliver on story like RE1 did. Code Veronica was almost at that same level to me.

Game wise I still think it holds up alright. Like you mentioned the UI and controls are a bit rough but the overall game design is pretty damn good. It chugs a bit during the start of the second disc but it all comes together for a trademark crazy climax.

Code Veronica is part of the main series, which is what a shocking amount of people don't know. the naming doesn't help with that of course.
so that's why many often ignore it when talking about the main series, which is sad.

So yeah, if you like RE and you never played it... PLAY IT! it is the actual Resident Evil 3 really...
Resident Evil 3 startet its life as an action oriented spin-off and only got renamed and reworked into a main series game after development issues with another RE project made them up the scale and PR for Nemesis. and they named it Resident Evil 3 because they thought it would be better for PR reasons to have a neat numbered trilogy on PS1 instead of RE1, RE2 and RE: Nemesis.

I've heard it can't run on a PS5

you heard wrong! it can! but they had to reduce the resolution to 240p and half the framerate
1.0

My first RE was RE2 remake. Great game. It made me a fan. I guess I held off for so long because of the horror aspect.

I am not as much as a chicken anymore. Benefits of getting older.

dude you HEF to play resident evil revelaitons

I actually just bought Revelations and Revelations 2 on Steam during the last sale.

I'm open to playing the series in whatever order. I was planning to do 0 next since it was the next chronological release, but if i should do Revelations next lemme know!

I consider myself a hard core Resident Evil-fan, but for some reason (never owned a Dreamcast for one) I only played this for the first time a couple of years ago.

Needless to say, I loved it. I would put it up there with the best games in the series.

Revelations 1 & 2 are overrated. Don't believe the hype that they once had. I'd say play them if you can get them cheap but don't expect them to be great like people would like you to believe.

I would also say for those of you who haven't tried the RE series because you're not into scary games or movies, at least of the games I've played so far I haven't found RE to be 'scary' exactly. They can get kinda intense at times, I guess, but they're not psychologically disturbing or anything.

I'm an anxious dude who has never enjoyed "being scared" and even for me RE is very tame.

That said I haven't played 7 yet which I've heard is more intense?

the game has really good gyro aiming, so you don't really need a circle pad pro... but it's also a good way to play.

I really like Code Veronica too OP, although i never played the PS2 version but i played the DC one several times over.

I like Code Veronica a lot also. Has been ages since I played it.

The atmosphere was more horror, like the original, the puzzles were more challenging and the ammo was scarcer. Despite the action filled opening CG, which made me worried at the time, the gameplay was true survivor horror!

Some people says there is too much back and forth in the exploration, but I had a blast from start to finish. It was always fun to search for more ammo/keys/health itens.

I agree. Despite the zombies, RE is more suspense/tension than truly scary and disturbing stuff. IMO the experience is more akin to the movie Alien than Stephen King movies. You fear not having ammo and being killed, not losing your soul to demons.

The only exception is REVII which has more psychological horror. It isn't in the level of Silent Hill but there is more scary stuff. VR must increase a lot the horror I wager.

Code Veronica is the real RE3, full stop. It's dated now but it was awesome at the time and I will never understand why some people frame it as a misstep for the series.

I would love to see it get the remake treatment. I don't think it will bit it rightfully should.

Definitely play Resident Evil: Revelations next. It'll be a nice little change after having played RE Code: Veronica

I just played Resident Evil: Zero and it is something best saved for when you have a lot of patience imo. I would save it for when you have more RE games completed under your belt, personally. Will be able to appreciate it better that way

I know it probably won't happen, but out of the OG RE games I think RE 0 would benefit the most from a remake. It has some really cool ideas and a good setup it just doesn't pull those things off all that well.

The initial 2 person puzzle in the train where you transfer things via dumbwaiter (I don't remember exactly what it was, I beat the game 16 years ago) was cool but the lack of an item box and the over reliance on the 2 person system without being intuitive just wrecks the game. It's one of those games that nails the first few hours and just gets worse from there on out.

Code Veronic is my favorite Resident Evil among Resi 2. I liked it a lot back then, the atmosphere is very, very good.

My fave Resi Evil. I kind of wish they went this style with the newer ones, the same fixed viewpoint style, but using polygons allowing for camera movement and panning etc.

I got stuck on a bad save for the airplane Tyrant fight with low ammo and healing items. After banging my head against that scenario for hours on end, I finally eked a win. I remember thinking, "thank Christ that is over, I finally beat this game" only to be greeted by Antarctica and realizing I was only roughly half way through. I never went back.

Unfortunately things like that can happen a lot on older games, where you get screwed over, or screw yourself over. Thankfully its somhting thad devs have been able to avoid in modern games.

Code Veronica is the shit. I remember playing it day one on the Dreamcast and blown away how much better is looked than Nemesis. Fun fact they only came out 5 months apart.

First time I played the game the same thing happened to me. I just ended up starting a new game. The good ole days where time wasn't an issue

one of my favorite RE up until that part where you can get locked in the game without possibility to continue if you mismanaged ammo
boss fight inside a flying plane

RE CVX is awesome, it's a survival horror epic. The Ashford twins are creepy af and are truly suitable for a survival horror game. I should replay this sometime soon...CVX HD for PC when?

Yeah. That Tyrant cargo plane fight took a great toll on me. I still like CV, and wanted to give it another playthrough but my PS2 compatible phat 60GB model YLOD-ed on me again. This, after 3 reflows and arctic silver thermal paste.

The game has some pit falls other RE games don't really have. There are a few instances that can fuck you over so bad that you have to restart. Technically you don't have to, but if you're not adept you probably will.

The game wasn't bad, but the gameplay was a step back from RE3.

CV has the best knife though. Knife runs are rather fun.

Yeah I usually end up with tons of ammo and health items because that Knife is so good.

Urgh, too much zombie inside a room, no more violence toward the zombies (no decapitation for example), steve being annoying, the worst boss battle of the series, the bad character swapping, the evil backtracking inside the island...

I still think CV is still one of the weakest entries with RE0 and RE5, even if I'm quite fond of the cheesiness of the good old Alfred. .

Everything bad with classic RE up to 11, the game.

Cheese.
Braindead key-and-lock puzzles that require half your equipment space to bring all the stuff you need with you.
Cheese.
Blind camera angles that prevent you from seeing enemies than can see and reach you no problemo.
Cheese.
Highly impractical boss room layouts.
Cheese.
Longer loading screens for perfectly normal rooms because, uh, suspence.
Cheese.
Poison everywhere.
Cheese.
Mansions. Oh, and more mansions.
Cheese.
Tyrants and countdowns.
Did I mention cheese yet?

Code Veronica is redundancy distilled. And the story, characters and voice acting, dear God.
Only Zero managed to do worse.

RE0 is the only mainline game in the series I didn't play. It was initially exclusive to GC and then later bad reviews put me off this game for good. I just noticed its only $7 dolaroos on playstation store! Worth giving it a try, or not worth the time?

Regards

Man, i wanted to play Code Veronica on my PS4, but then i've learned it's the 50hz PAL PS2 game...
Like really? You had already an updated port on the PS3, and now we're back to that? 😥

I like the game for what it is but IMO it's one of the weakest classic parts. The graphics make it looks least horror-like from all entries and while I like backtracking and all, I'd say they went overboard with it here.

Idk, I've enjoyed the puzzles and to me, part of the fun of RE is inventory management with key items. Poisonous enemies are a pain (FUCK the spiders), but poison itself isn't a huge danger in this game. Best I can tell it just prevents you from knowing exactly how much health you have? It's pretty easy to tell just based on how your character is moving.

I do agree that the blind corners can get frustrating at times, but to me it feels like an intentional move to heighten the suspense. Also yes, the constant loads from room to room (particularly the 'heartbeat' ones that you mentioned) have gotten really old.

Even for a Gamecube / PS2 game back in the day there were some beautiful shots (scenery) really early into that game. I agree, it has a lot of potential. I have a ton of ideas for it

Damn! You must have really wanted it to be over quick lolololol

It took me like 20+ tries, that part was definitely frustrating. The entire game is tough. It took me so long to beat it. For me, it's the toughest Resident Evil

Resident Evil: Zero is now the most frustrating game I've ever played in my life, but CVX is the game that had me working for it the longest. I would have never completed this game in my teens. Same with RE0
