• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

So... is the 3DS worth it now?

It's a downloadable game for the eShop...
Wow. Just... Wow.

Also, so 2D = $10 now?
Why is that?

Why can't a 2D game be worth $40? Especially when it's from such an acclaimed developer like WayForward.

I hate 2D haters so much.

Congrats on being unbanned.

You should wait for the revision that mysteriously and miraculously adds all sorts of wonderful, cool shit like:

  • second slider
  • more bigger battery life
  • pencil sharpener
  • game player
  • lunchbox
  • nail clippers

I'd chortle at the "wait until revision" replies, but the revision might have a superior battery and built-in 2nd Circle Pad

Nintendo would have some magic powers if they could make a battery that lasts longer while using an addon that requires its own separate battery.

I don't think this second analog is going to be as big as you guys do.

GET THE DAMN ZELDA EDITION 3DS NOW.

It's GORGEOUS.

Yes it is.

I'm very happy with my purchase thus far. It's leaps and bounds in build quality over my own DS lite (I skipped the DSi and DSi XL's, software wasn't there for an upgrade). The minor improvements (better screens, no scratching, better battery life) in the Zelda edition means that I haven't experienced any of the glitches that the early launch models had. I figure if they do announce a redesign that's significantly better, the Zelda edition will retain a bit more value as opposed to the other models.

On the software side, I'm really enjoying OOT 3DS, which is truly the definitive version. There's also enough meat in the form of quality GB classics and 3D classics in the eshop to keep me occupied for a while. Netflix works great if I want to watch a movie or show in bed.

That's true, there will eventually be a PS Vita 2000 and 3000 down the pipe too.

Even if they don't have official names, the internals will still be shrunk to save on money and increase battery life.

Looking forward to the same people popping up in any thread vaguely related to the Vita telling everyone not to purchase and to instead wait on the redesign.

Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Ocarina of Time, and Star Fox 64 3D.

Next year you've got Luigi's Mansion 2, Kid Icarus, Paper Mario 3DS, Animal Crossing 3DS, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Tales of the Abyss at the very least.

I can guarantee that another price drop is not going to happen until a revision, and we likely won't see a revision until 2013 at the earliest.

If none of those games strike your fancy, then you would be fine waiting it out until we see stuff like Etrian Odyssey 4 show up.

What else would you do with the $200 dollars instead of buy a 3DS? Would you get a 360+Skyrim? Hop on a PS3 Holiday deal? Put it towards a Vita or Wii u? Buy a tablet?

right now, to buy anything but a PC, PS3, 360 or DS, you'll be buying a product based on it's future. So does the future of the 3DS look bright to you?

IMO, if you like JPN-geared games, the 3DS looks like it's in the best spot.

Oh did they fix the screen scratching issue? i've got the Zelda 3ds, but I didn't know if they fixed the scratch thing on the top screen for the Zelda/Flame Red ones

Unless Sony announces an add-on for two shoulder buttons or something, I doubt it'll be half as prevalent as the 3DS whining.

Go for it. Pick up OoT3D, Starfox, and SM3DL with it. There are other games that are worth it too (games I have yet to play). There's Devil Survivor Overclocked and Cave Story 3D as well.

The eShop content is pretty good too. This is the first time I've ever gotten a chance to play Metroid II, and if you've never played it before, Link's Awakening DX is awesome.

Well, I can't blame 'em, the 2000 was a massive improvement over the original PSP, and the ideal form factor would be Sony going back to the Go, but I'm one of the few that really enjoyed that system, it seems.

Selling a 360 for a 3DS? really depends on how much of a gamer you are.

3DS has some system sellers... but if you are some hardcore gamer whats out now wont hold you long.

I say if you have not jumped already, then you can wait.

Not with those memory card prices it isn't ideal.

Actually, it's more likely that a Vita revision will have built in memory. Which would be pretty good.

Given only 1 PSP revision had built-in memory, and it was the one that raised the PSP's MSRP, how likely do you think this will be for the first revision? It won't be. They'll definitely bundle memory cards though.

You know you can resell your 3DS just before a redesign occurs, right? You may lose 40$ in the process, the price of a game. Some are willing to pay this money to play online, others to save games. If gaming is your passion, I don't understand this fear of a potential redesign.

It's fine for me, as the 3DS has reached a more realistic price. I know Nintey is magic, but not that magical. Rather, Nintendium and related Nintendo hardware components are a fusion of science and magic, fueled by Pkmin.

Having bought Skyward Sword, I'm setting my sights on the Zelda 3DS :3

But then you can't transfer your purchases over.

If you walk into a store and see there are a number of games you'd like to play on the system, then yes it's worth it to you.

A redesign will come eventually but only you can decide if the inconvenience and potential cost difference of trading in an old system a year or more down the line is prohibitive to your enjoyment of the system now.

It's a sad world we live in. No 2D game is worth more than 1200 MS points to some people here.

Apparently, After this months update you can.
Don't quote me on that.

But I think you'd need both systems at the same time. So you can't sell the original system and then transfer stuff over to the new one. You'd have to buy the revision first, transfer, then sell the old one.

I'll never understand this mentality. I mean, 2D games are beautiful and often contain far more content than modern 3D games.

eBay the old 3DS after you get the new one?

Another 10-15 dollar game that will be 40 dollar?

You mean another game that will sell for $40 but then be ported to ios within a year and sold for a dollar.

That game is going to tank at $40. Not saying that I hope it fails, but I see nothing but commercial failure for it. :(

Wait, he said it WAS an Eshop title, so still 10-15 dollars I suppose. My ignorance was right this time.

It was worth it before, but it is even more so now with the Mario Bundles, various colours and MK7 coming out, not to mention Revelations in January.

Technically not 2d... but I haven't seen any 3d game do a more 'elegant' dance. Even dance central still looks a bit robotic.

If there is games you want to play on the system it is worth it. I have already got a lot of use out of my launch 3ds. There is always a redesign around the corner. If you continue to wait until redesigns are finished, you will be waiting a long time. You can always sell the old 3ds and put the money towards the redesign, you wont have to pay much for a new machine.

Have they announced pricing? I could see it doing well (for an e-shop game) at a sub-$20 price point.

I don't think any download game on Nintendo systems has ever been over $15.
So it'll likely be $15.

Ah, the 2D animation that was pioneered by the real Prince of Persia.

How robust is the e-shop so far?

Shantae is their most expensive DD game game to buy, and that's like $12-$18 IIRC. I can't imagine they'd make a DD game cost more than that.

It's a shame no one bought their PS3/PSP version of Mighty Flip Champs...
