So is Wii U currently the best second console?

Yeah, for me it has been, at times, but if I'm limiting things to just the three current gen consoles, so far, I'm spending most of my time on X1, then PS4, then Wii U. (Gaming on PC has become a larger factor over the last few years to become my true actual secondary gaming platform, though.) Still, a generally weak gen of games so far, but I guess I'm finding less interest, overall, in the focus of what becomes prioritized for consoles (and mainstream PC) these days. Wii U, as absolutely barren for choice as it has been, still managed some fine releases that get long tail play but there's just not much there for me in the last two years outside of Splatoon, Mario Maker, and MK8 that I've felt especially hooked on. Hoping Ninty does better with NX.

3DS is best primary, Vita is best secondary.
Then maybe Wii U, PS4 will pass it next year.
Though I finally got a decent PC, so I imagine maybe that too.

honestly it's a bad time to buy a wiiu, waiting so long into it's life, why not just wait 1 more year for prices to crash when nx is close. (GameCube was what 50bucks, wiis were like 80nd hand before wiiu launched)

stability of Xbox one and ps4 make them a better buy.

PC + Wii U is the sweet spot.

my vote's here as well.

I have a nice gaming PC, Wii U, and PS4.

with as much overlap as there is between PC and PS4/XB1, I almost never even turn my PS4 on.

meanwhile, wii u has some fantastic first/second party games you can't play anywhere else

To me PC+PS4 is the best combination because of bloodborne, sfv and all the jrpgs announced for ps4. WiiU among other things has too few games that i am interested in for the price (of both the console and games) to be worth it.

Looking at the consoles from last generation, I don't think that we can expect price collapses anymore. PS3 is still over $200 MSRP, and it sells worse than the Wii U by this point in time.

Nintendo will just pull a Vita and stop sending stores much in the way of stock leading up to the NX. At best, you will get a MSRP drop to the $200-250 range.

No. In term of software the Wii U is the weakest nintendo home console to date.

Either wait for the NX or keep a single PS4.

No, PS4 is.

No. You guys really do the most for the Wii U but seriously it isn't imo. It has great games, but Idk, they are not games to write home about. I like them for what they are "fun" and that's it. I don't have lasting moment with them and they are not memorable in the slightest for me. Maybe to others who clearly are always loyal to Nintendo products but not me.

The Xbox one and the PS4 and even the PC has done fine for me in the Wii U apocalypse and that's just my opinion. So no, it's not the second best for me.

It depends on your interests, like anything else. For some people it's the perfect "2nd" system because of the Nintendo exclusives. I think the best combo is PC+WiiU, if you could only have two.

If you're trying to look at it objectively somehow, Xbone is probably the least desirable of them all as a secondary machine. I say that for a few reasons: Xbox exclusives don't cover as many genres as Nintendo and Sony's; many Xbox franchises seem to be coming to PC anyway; multiplats are more desirable on PS4 or PC; XBL offers less value than PSN, etc.

I'm not trying to say that the Xbone is a bad system, but rather that it isn't offering much that's unique in terms of a secondary machine versus WiiU or PS4. Obviously it all comes down to the games in the end, but quantitatively at least, there's not much there. So yes, I think WiiU is the best secondary system - both objectively and subjectively.

Well, that's kind of the most important factor to consider when deciding what to play.

Also, the whole "I guess it's a good system if you're a Nintendo fanboy" nonsense is getting old.

The best secondary consoles is Vita and 3ds.

Assumiing we're not considering backwards compatible titles as part of their respective libraries, explain please.

Disappointing handhelds, especially when compared to their predecessors. I think even gba has better library tthan the 3ds

better than the wii at least. Possibly even better than the n64. GameCube had some third parties so idk.

Xbox one is for me. There's a few genre's that I hate playing on the dualshock 4, as well as the exclusives (and BC) that come with the XB1.

That's a good question. I mainly game on PC and have a PS4 and Wii U.

I rarely play games on either console, but they are actually pretty even with each other for me. Both consoles offer unique JRPG experiences for me, such as Xenoblade and the upcoming Persona 5. Atlus X FE will be another one.

I got Dying Light on PS4 only because my friends were and wanted to play with them.
Same with MGSV.

Honestly that's pretty much it on the console front. I got Bloodborne on ps4 but I'm not all gung ho about the Souls series anymore. I got series fatigue with Dark Souls 2.

On Wii U the only other games I got are Wind Walker HD and Fatal Frame. Sadly games like Wonderful 101, Bayonetta and Splatoon don't interest me.

I suppose a lot of people would view the consoles as a waste of money for me, but I don't. Even if they spend an inordinate amount of time unplugged, I still get a lot of entertainment from them and still more to come.

So Wii U and PS4 are both pretty even for me.

I have been waiting to buy a WiiU cause I thought it was too expensive.
Then Nintendo had the basic model back again, after 1-2 years missing, and I bought one.

Its my most played console this year, and my PS4 is still waiting for the game that makes me play hours like i've done with the WiiU.

Right now its Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze that is my most played games, awesome, hard, and rewarding when you finally make your way through the level.

Super Mario 3d World is another masterpiece, aswell as Mario Maker...

Gonna get Yoshis Wolly world aswell, and Kirby.

Most fun for a long time with this console.

And btw, the IQ in Donkey Kong is awesome, I think its 720P but it impress me way more then anything on PS4 in IQ.

PC + Wii U is the sweet spot.
Yup. You can get almost all the 3rd party gsmes, PC exclusives, and Nintendo games. Once upon a time 3ds + PC was secretly the best combo before Nintendo decoded to switch seemingly all development to NX.
EDIT: BC is a good case for Xbox One.

Wii U has by far the strongest first party. If you have a moderately powerful pc, wii u is really the best console. PS4 and Xbone are replaceable by one or the other or PC. Wii U is truly unique.

What??? 3DS IS LIFE!!!

ahahah great rpgs (bravely default, tales of abyss, EO, SMT IV, SMT IV Final, DQ 7 and, Bravely Second...). Mario 3D land, Fire emblem, Pokemon XY (yes, I like pokemon XY)...

3DS is amazing!

yeah most Wii U games are 720p but most are also 60fps which helps significantly with IQ

It's the best first console if you have a PC. It offers unique games and unique hardware unlike the other two.

May as well be.

Yep, SRPGs, 2D / 3D Platformers, open world JRPGs, Action adventure games, Puzzle games and character action games are all the same.

Some of you don't even try.

Edit: Reading comprehension is hard. The OP dooesn't call the WiiU "the second best console to own" , he calls it "the best second console".

I think like you mostly, which is why I am surprised I dedicate most of my time on my WiiU ! Typoman, the Marios, Xenoblade and lots of other games are the reason why my PS4 and my PC are my secondary platforms. The big hitters have come in rather slowly.

That's not even true though. I'm a huge Nintendo fan and aside from disliking the controller and system itself, the franchises I love most aren't there. Star Fox and Zelda two of those - and I guess I can play them next year. Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon and Mario Maker were really fantastic products - but truthfully the entire amount of great Wii U games aren't enough. Did you see the Fall line up for god sakes!!

Nintendo itself is a world class developer. But their first-party releases don't always ideally represent their variety of flavors. There is quite a bit of saturation of platformers and uninspired mini-game titles that haven't resonated well with myself or the masses. You have a Bayonetta here, and a Xenoblade there, but not enough to balance the system.

It is the best secondary console.
A PC isn't a console so we're talking about 2nd next to PS4/XBone, and even if it was there's too much overlap with the PS4/XBone.

Of course, if your tastes magically align so that you like nothing on the Wii U....

I wouldn't even call it the best third console. I'd bestow that honor to PS3 or 360. Wii U is just a failure all around, and as long as they continue to charge stupid amounts of money for the console and old games, it will never be a factor.

If you have PS4 you currently have little reason to get Xbox One.. reverse the roles and it's a much different scenario. Don't get me wrong, both are quality consoles but you'd be a fool to deny the overlap is huge.

To answer your question, yes, Wii U is way better alternative as a second (or first) console than buying another box with 90% identical software selection to the one you have already. Ultimately it of course comes down to ones taste in gaming, if you're weird and any Nintendo titles don't interest you then there is no point in getting the Wii U.

Oh, and if portables are brought into equation then 3DS is IMO much better alternative than Vita. Although I own, enjoy and recommend both of these machines.

Nothing I said really has anything to do with that. I actually kind of agree with you. Wii U, overall, has been a disappointment for me.
