• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

So its been a year since the PS4 was announced on Feb 20th.

I remember saying that FFXIII Versus would be retitled FFXV and development would be transferred to PS4. Boy did some of the members posting in that topic try to make me out to be an idiot lmao saying that "it'd be too expensive and a waste of resources on SE's part" just to paraphrase. Now look how the tables have turned and the mighty have fallen! Well hopefully the game achieves the expectations both SE and the gaming public at large have hoisted above it's head

Ah, the PS4 reveal. That thread was the primary one that motivated me to stop lurking and create a GAF account. I pretty much knew that I was going to pick one up day one, and I haven't been disappointed.

Lol!!!

8GB DDR5 announcement was so clutch. Then pretty much every media outlet predicted a $500 price tag and Sony dropped the $400 BOMB.................

One thing that stuck in my mind after the announcement was how crazy the media got. It was as if Sony killed someone's dog how aggressive the gaming press got versus the online reaction.

Rumors of the Durango got leaked and instead of pressing Microsoft the media discounted the rumors or laid the "Sony Too" argument all over the place. People got mad at Sony's silence while seemingly playing soft ball with Microsoft.

Then E3 happened. After that it was hilarious to see damage control dressed as Objective Opinions.

Congrats to Sony. You set a plan stayed the course and blew away the true gamers in the face of an Industry dictating how to bone yourselves over. I'm glad they're being rewarded for a gamers first console. Can't wait for the anniversary of the Bone reveal. Should be interesting.

It was insane.
So much disbelief, incoherent rantings, people being banned left and right, GAF being dead 90% of every refresh attempts, dogs & cats living together, MASS HYSTERIA!

Tell him about the Twinkie!

I lurked that day (despite being a member), but that was a fun thread to read.

So, reading this, I remember the "They need to make it so the light bar can be turned off" thread(s). No an issue for me at least. The 8GB DDR threads, the ESRAM vs. compute that blah blah blah I can't follow the math threads, the how will Eurogamer talk about Sony vs Microsoft threads. Good times. Good times.

There are still light bar threads.

What an amazing year for Sony in terms of their home console.

So many debates, some personal favorites;

No ESRAM? Got to feed the Gee Pee YOU!
GDDR5 latency very much thank yous
Cloud is the equivalent of forty three sixties and eighty one-eighties, this box will keep growin'
You do know you can add up ESRAM bandwith?
Microsoft juss stumbled on extra bandwythz, "didnt realize we could write and read at the same time"
GDDR5 is uncomfortable
Unbalanced Unbalanced Unbalanced

And Richard Leadbetter lapped all of it up.

It went by fast, but I'm a bit disappointed that we know/seen so little of what the PS4 has to offer later this year and early next.

Oh God! That takes me back to the FUD leading up to the PlayStation Meeting!

- All third party games are exclusive/timed-exclusive to Durango
- All developers predict MS Durango will dominate right out the gate
- The Durango with a dGPU
- Orbis with the repeat of the $599 price tag
- Sony is too broke to offer a competitive machine and instead will offer a modern day Wii!

Oh and countless GAF posters thinking we're going to see an incremental improvement in visuals (their leader was iLo!) from next gen.

It truly has been amazing to watch Sony repeatedly slap all the FUD and naysayers down.

They continue to do that even now, all there doing is listening to the consumer and the hardcore gamer.

Sony absolutely played Microsoft all last year. So many reactionary moments and baiting.

Keeping quiet on the DRM until E3, letting Microsoft double down on it, certain publications CONVINCED Sony would announce the same even after the great #PS4NODRM then announcing the next day that their console had none of it and was cheaper, leading to preorders forcing Microsoft's hand to change it completely.

I almost feel like Microsoft were expecting Sony to drag the PS3 along for another while due to announcing games for it, hence all of the half-baked, half-finished, ass backwards ideas Microsoft had, while Sony just did their own thing.

The mystery surrounding that event, the hype, the unknown, the wait, everything was perfect. One of the best moments in GAF ever.

If you're losing a battle of PR, wits and public reception, of course you're going to want negative reactions to stop.

MS were monumental dickbags in the pre- and post launch days of the Xbone. Openly hostile in policy and comments to the wider gaming industry and consumers. And then expect sweetness and light from all sides when the reality of their situation takes hold. They made their bed, now they have to lie on it.

I forgot a lot about this show.

David Cage: With Next Gen we can push so many more polygons. Its going to make everything better

Media Molecule Guy: Polygons are dumb. Here are some puppets rocking out.

That was an amazing time. The run-up last year for these consoles was incredible.

Some of the stuff that made 2013 quite a memorable year:

8GB of GEE DEE DEE ARE FIVE!!!!!!!!
The constant denial in the dozens of technical threads
GDDR5 latency
ESRAM
Power of the cloud
DRM
TV TV TV TV
The Family Plan
The entire Xbox division acting like amateurish clowns
Kinect!!!
Adam Orth
The mystical Family Plan where you can share full games for free
Gaming journalism failing every step of the way

Day 1 music.

And this is 100% true.

Very few people are aware of this, but the character modelling for Crash Bandicoot was performed by Andrew House. If you examine the brief video clip of the 2013 PlayStation Meeting [...] when Mark Cerny took to the stage (10:40) and Andy exclaims "That's not how we rehearsed it!", he pays homage to Crash by swivelling around to face Cerny in classic arcade style

whaaaaat!??
