So they just left the 3DS to die?

3DS compared to Vita is far superior in terms of exclusives. Vita has barely any worthwhile ones.

3DS, while not as good as DS, is still amazing.

To those saying Nintendo never said the N3DS would have more exclusive games, that's not true. First of all because Iwata himself said more exclusive software was in development (I guess he wasn't technically lying as The Binding of Isaac and the upcoming Lifespeed are exclusive to the N3DS). Second because in the Japanese Nintendo Direct that announced the N3DS, Iwata said one of the reasons they made it was because they could make games like Xenoblade Chronicles that weren't possible on the original 3DS.

I don't really care either way as the screen size of the N3DS, head-tracking 3D, and Lifespeed are enough to make me want to buy it to replace my broken original 3DS and 3DS XL, but people who expected more are not wrong.

In Nintendo's financial Q&A they said they had more 3DS support in the works.

It also has to be mentioned that DQ XI, the biggest game of 2016 in Japan, is coming to 3DS and is the most wanted version according to the Famitsu most wanted poll.

n3DS was probably supposed to be like GB Color in the way of exclusives. it just didn't play out that way

The jump from BW to colour was a bigger factor then more cpu clock, plus the gameboy colour was a good price at release while new 3DS is something like £130 or £160 for the XL.

The 3DS has been a really disappointing piece of hardware, I was expecting a god tier software library like the DS. That was to be expected I guess, the DS was on a different level.

My 3DS is a Atlus machine and will probably remain that way, unless the DQ remake gets localized.

The 3Ds has a fairly disappointing 2016 lineup, having sold much more than the Vita, one would think it would still have a good amount of games that would be underway.

Between the 3DS and the Vita, I love my Vita so much more. Despite the Vita having a pretty shitty image of being an otaku handheld, the Vita has an extremely diverse library. It has its 1st party games such as Gravity Rush, Tearaway and Killzone. It has a good VN selection, from horror, mystery and even Otome. A good amount DRPG's and of course Persona 4 Golden.

But it does have a good amount of games underway. Whether that number is smaller than the games coming out on the Vita is possible because the games coming out on the Vita don't take up as much time and resources for publishers as the games coming out on the 3DS. For example projects like Monster Hunter X/Stories, Youkai Watch 3, Dragon Quest XI or Snack World are tentpoles for their publishers so shitting out a lot of small games is a waste of resources.

Magic 8-ball (and common sense) points to no. Neither Square-Enix or Nintendo is going to bother localizing a 3DS title for what would almost definitely be a 2017 release. It's taking Nintendo the better part of a year just to localize Fire Emblem. They are slow. Given no firm release window, I doubt DQXI launches in Japan before Q4 2016. The west will get the PS4 version. That's probably a large part of why it exists.

What the heck is going on?

I have nothing to look forward to coming out on this - what an amazing console this was for Nintendo and I feel like the support has either haulted or stopped altogether!?

Anything of substance coming up? I guess I got too spoiled after they amazing Majoras Mask this year.

What ?!

I've to choose this end of the year between so many games on 3DS :
Etrian Odyseey mystery dungeon
Etrian odyssey second story
Youkay Watch
Animal Crossing : happy home designer
Zelda

orz

Nintendo is localizing like 5 huge text jrpgs a year. I see almost nobody else but Square doing that.

The 3DS version of DQ XI is going to sell 3-5 million in Japan. Someone will bring it over.

I don't get why Nintendo doesn't push DQ in the west, it has potential to be a moderate success, I mean even a DQ spin off got localized in the West, why can't a mainline DQ title make it?

Who knows how long Vita games take to localize and what not, they are smaller budget games but they are typically text heavy. Then you have all the major niche publishers localizing content for the Vita.

I don't want this to become a contest on which handheld has the most games, I just find it odd that the best performing platform doesn't have a robust 2016 lineup despite the NX likely launching at the end of the year.

And you forgot Fire Emblem Fates in your list ;) I'm actually interested in that title.

Honestly, the 2016 3DS lineup looks far better than what we got in 2015 (though Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was pretty amazing).

Right out of the gate for next year we have:

Fire Emblem Fates
Shin Megami Tensei IV Final (assuming this gets a quick localization like its predecessor)
Mario & Luigi Paper Jam (if it turns out good)
Zero Escape 3
Ace Attorney 6
Metroid Prime Federation Force
(the GOTY of 2016)

And possibly:

Picross 3D 2
Monster Hunter X (if MHXG isn't in the works)
Yokai Watch 2

Good riddance, I can't stand to look at that screen another minute. Say what you want about mobile games, at least they dont run in 240p.

And more actually if you look at some other titles. It is a good library.

OP, there's more than likely a few top tier DS titles that you never got around to for whatever reason. Ever play Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes? Unbelievable puzzle/rpg

It does not seem fathomable to me that we can rake Nintendo over the coals for not the best 3DS lineup when Sony killed vita after 6 months...........

The 2016 lineup already is good and they have not even announced the pokemon yet.

Are there people that only play exclusives or something? Overall the Vita has a better library than the 3DS to play games on the go.

Woooo lordy

I know, opinions and all that, but holy shit is this ever the most assbackwards thing I have ever seen. It's not even remotely close. The 3DS library shits on the Vitas library from a towering height. This isn't a DS, PSP situation. Sony flat out abandoned their handheld and so did just about everyone else. Its just... a landslide. It didnt HAVE to be this way, but Sony decided to check out, so.... oh well.

Sony didn't really kill the Vita after six months. Let's be fair.

And even if they did, that really has nothing to do with Nintendo or how they've handled 3DS.

We have new mainline Shin Megami Tensei and Etrian Odyssey games coming, and possibly Pokemon Generation VII (I can't see it releasing for NX in 2017). The 3DS hasn't even peaked yet.

Hmm. i forgot I'd better pick up Yoikai Watch before the store closes.

I can't see how you are out of stuff to play unless you dislike RPGs and/or Nintendo games. I could always use more, but there's plenty to play, for sure.

Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, Hyrule Warriors Legends, and Project x Zone 2 are all coming soonish. Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon in particular comes out in 13 days, and its looking like its going to be amazing.
Besides all that though, Etrian Odyssey V is coming eventually, and I think it can be assumed that we're getting a new Pokemon game eventually.

I think the 3DS is doing fine.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon still coming? HOpe it's better than Gates to Infinity. What a turd that was, and I loved the first two.

Oh damn, it's close. Can't wait to see impressions. Don't care for official reviews though. The first two games got reviews in the 50s and 60s but they're honestly my favorite Pokemon games.

I would normally agree with you but you have to understand, the Vita still gets plenty of games, many of which could be considered quality titles. Its just that they're all super niche anime-y type games, so if you have a Vita and are into them its probably the greatest thing ever.
It all depends on taste, really.

This post is pretty much spot on. Vita gets loads of Japanese and indie games. If that's not for you (and for many it isn't), then Vita isn't for you. 3DS was mainly about Nintendo games, and there's still a trickle of those coming through. Same deal though- if that's not for you, 3DS isn't for you.

I think what everyone needs to accept is that neither are in an ideal situation. There no point in console wars here.

The 3DS is far from an Atlus machine it beats the DS on at least one point, first party support, thered have been great games like 3D Land, KI Uprising, FE Awakening, A Link Between Worlds,Pokemon, Dream Team, the Zelda/Star Fox Remasters, etc.

Besides some gems from third party not available before like REvelations or KH 3D. wich were exclusive and portable.

new Mario and Luigi, that pokemon clone, Hyrule Warriors?

Remind me the new Mario and Luigi game?

I just started playing Dream Team.
What's its reputation? I like it a lot. I realized I've never played a M&L game before, curious how DT stacks up.

I've played the Paper Marios, though I always figured these games to be the same so usually skipped them.

DT is the weakest or second weakest game in the M&L series depending on one's feelings towards Partners in Time. The first and third games were the best.

For me, and I wonder if I am alone in this, is that handheld gaming feels much more dead. I have a new 3DS XL and a vita and played each of them maybe... 2 hours this year. I have Majora's Mask untouched and all the Layton games untouched.

Only time I'll pick it up is when traveling, and this year I just found it more convenient to use my phone to switch between browsing the web and playing Hearthstone against my wife than using the 3DS XL, which feels much more limited and archaic/retro than my phone. The social aspect is killing Nintendo imo, I know with my phone I can do stuff with people I may be around whereas the 3DS/vita is a "leave me alone, I wanna do stuff solo" thing. I don't even take it anymore on short trips since I know I won't use it.

So yeah, not sure what Nintendo would have to do to get me to buy a new handheld, it would have to be pretty spectacular. On the other hand I'd definitely pick up any new Mario or Zelda games they release on mobile, the game I enjoyed most this year on my 3DS was Super Mario 3D.

The new Mario & Luigi is actually a M&L/Paper Mario crossover.
