Boston has a similar system with similar pricing, and its launch last year was actually really successful. They're supposedly doing rapid expansion this year because many stations had bikes almost always checked out.

The only difference in pricing for Boston's system is that the first half hour is free after you pay the initial fee (also $5 for 24 hours). The price is pretty steep after that, as bad or even a bit worse than Fort Lauderdale's. But, the first half hour of each ride being free means that most people will only pay the initial fee, as Boston is geographically pretty small for a major city and they have stations everywhere.

I think a day pass is 5 bucks here? Monthly pass is 40, and yearly pass is something I forget. Those were the prices last time I checked.
Ohhhhh my god last night some guy on a Bixi bike asked me where a station was so he could drop his off, I told him I didn't know and I was literally right down the street from there.

Yeah, $6 an hour is pretty insane.
In Europe, they have much better bike vending machines for far cheaper.

7-8 euro a day for a bike here in NL (that's amsterdam as well, probably cheaper elsewhere)

This thread is a great revelation in forum hyperbole to me. The outrage at the pricing is puzzling and I guess it's because of a misconception about what the service is about.

Bixi have been in Montreal for a couple of years now and as the other Montrealers have said, it's a huge success. It's part of life in Montreal now. Good luck trying to find a bike during rush hour!

The idea is not to rent a bike for the day. The idea is to speed up short commutes between two points. For example, to replace a short taxi ride with a short bike ride, replace a commute that's depdendent on a rigid and unreliable bus schedule with a flexible (as in available now) bike ride, enjoy the summer weather, cram a little exercice in your daily grind.

In those scenarios, which are a good part of city living, it's perfect and it's competitive, price wise. If you need more than 45 minutes to bike from A to B, chances are a taxi, the bus or the subway are better and faster alternatives. Hence, the fact it's free for the first 30-45 minutes is plenty enough.

From personnal experience, the service is great. For example, getting from any interesting place (bars, restaurants, etc.) to my place is roughly 15 - 20$ by cab, I can cover the same distance by bike for half that. Let me tel you, there's nothing better than cruising the city at the wee hours of the night after a night out. Other scenarios are traveling between the subway station and work; much faster than walking.

I don't know how it fits in a city like Fort Lauderdale, but in a tight city like Montreal, it's perfect and now indispensable.

So 8.50 if I need it for 45 minutes?

LOL NO

Or a $1.00 if you just return it to a station and get another one for those last 15-minutes.

Yeah, the 30 minute thing is expensive, but you can game the system depending on demand and/or just get a $5.00/24 hour pass for the day and use it heavily (or don't).
