So what is considered "nerdy" these days?

I mean back when I growing up in the 80's/90's computers, video games, star trek were considered for nerds/geeks. I can't imagine this being the case nowadays so what is it?

I'm not in high school anymore, so I couldn't tell you.

As far as social status towards outsiders goes, I guess Hipsters are the new Nerds.

Nerds are still Nerds, it's just that it's no longer weird or socially unacceptable to be one.

No no no, Hipsters are the new douches

being a computer/tech nerd used to be a bad thing, now its acceptable because the way technology is going

Certain types of videogames are still considered nerdy, especially Japanese ones.

Fedoras and neckbeards go without saying.

I think it's funny how the definitions of nerd/geek/dork or whatever are so different. To me, a nerd is simply someone who studies a lot. All the other stuff - otakus, bronies, gamers, comic book fans, LARPing - all that manboy stuff - is dorky. For computers and technology stuff that's what I call geeky.

Programing a vidoegame about waifus would be geeky. Having painted models of said waifu on your desk would be dorky. Spending hours with your face in a book to learn how to program would be nerdy. Obviously, there's a lot of room for cross-pollination.

I have always considered stuff nerdy that was intelligent. Like programming, engineering, geeking out with model rockets or something. This stuff is now pretty accepted these days.

The geek shit is the stupid culture crap like star trek, ponies, and anime. This stuff will always be scorned to one degree or another lol.

Probably has more to do with the extent to which you're into something than what you're into. At least in my definition.

You got it backwards I think. Nerds obsess over things to the point that it excludes normal stuff out of their lives. Geeks just means you have a strong interest and knowledge about something ex. Film Geeks, Art Geeks, Band Geeks, Gaming Geeks etc

yep. normally adjusted people know how to dial back their hobbies and interests. "nerds" live it. it's on their clothes, the tips of their tongues, takes precedence over sociability etc.

When I think of nerdy, I'm thinking of what kids are getting bullied for. Star Trek/Star Wars are pretty mainstream now so it's more accepted now than 20 years ago. I imagine a kid in high school with a MLP backpack is going to have a rough time.

I'd consider Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons type shit pretty nerdy.
Most anime stuff too.

I've never really seen anyone bullied for it though, in my school it was always just general weird people that were bullied, not for liking anything in particular.

everybody plays videogames and watches Star Wars/Trek.

Pretty sure if you're into My Little Pony you'll get your ass kicked no matter what your age is.

I think we are saying the same thing. A geek is into something that is kind of culturally weird. A nerd is into something that is of an intellectual nature like programming. Obviously a lot of overlap here haha.

less and less as time goes on. in the past a smartphone, some tech device that does a whole bunch of shit, would have been nerdy as hell but it's the opposite of that now

Comic book characters becoming popular as films makes them less nerdy too, but still can be

No I'm saying the distinction is not what subject matter they enjoy but the degree to which they obsess over it to the detriment of other normal parts of their lives (hygiene, social life, sex life, etc)

I just take it as stuff that we choose to take up out time as a main hobby etc. next to what people might do one day randomly.

Going to see a Star Trek film in the cinema isn't "nerdy", just like watching Twilight doesn't make you a Twihard, or whatever they call people obsessed with the books. It is when we dedicate our time do we become the nerds and geeks of this world in whatever subject that most of the population shies away from.

The difference for instance between me and my friend with Star Trek is that he might have occasionally watched it on TV when it was on just because and go to the cinema to see it just like any other film that is on, while I would sit down at the same time every week and move other things around to watch Star Trek, so in that aspect I wouldn't call him a nerd, just someone that has an interest but it has never developed any further than that.

Still the same stuff. Just some nerdy stuff has reached an acceptable dosage for mass consumption. However, once you go beyond that, you've turned into a social leper.

Watch Avengers film = normal person
Discuss the best Avengers lineup in the comics = NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD
