So what was the best game reveal this year?

Death Stranding by a mile.

The Berserk game kinda came out of nowhere.

The only real surprising thing about TLOU 2 was that it felt really soon to me.

Had to stop it about halfway through because it just got to the point where he seemed to be complaining for the sake of complaining. But Cory actually addressed a number of his complaints in interviews. He pointed out that the usual GoW elements are there, so they wanted to show something completely different from what you'd expect. GoW reveals are usually big setpiece experiences (which are still there), which meant that this allowed them to do something different instead of making people think that it's just GoW but prettier.

Yeah, maybe I'll like how the game turns out, I don't question the developers at all. However, at first impression the combat did look very mild and slow compared to the previous games and slow walking bits for father figure bonding in a motherfucking God of War game? That's just not cool IMO.

The whole thing screams TLOU which is a weird direction for a God of War game.

God of War, easily. I thought the concept of Norse mythology was a little dumb when it was tossed around in rumors, but they freaking delivered on that reveal.

Does anyone actually think that uncharted lost legacy trailer was good? It felt like it went on FOREVER and looked like standard naughty dog. The last of us 2 was cool to get confirmed, but dont think the trailer itself was that good.

Was Horizon Zero Dawn this year? Thats a hell of a reveal

It was really good.

And the reactions were all overwhelmingly positive. Check out the thread:

I'm gonna go with Spider-Man as best reveal. Knack 2 was my most unexpected though since we had all those rumors about Spidey.

does Super Mario Switch count? I'm more stoked for that anything else unveiled during a press conference or whatever

if not, GoW

Breath of the Wild E3 trailer was glorious, and that high rode for all five hours of the Treehouse demonstration. Not even Crash coming back moves the needle that much for me.

Resident Evil 7 is an honorable mention because it threw everyone off guard.

Resident Evil VII for me. Catches you off guard with the new direction. As much as I didn't like the gameplay shown I will say that the God of War reveal was done well. The Switch was shown off nicely in that video too, a much better first impression than the Wii U.

actually I change my answer to the new 3D Mario game shown in the Switch trailer

yeah it was all off screen and yeah they barely showed anything

but the triple jump is back

God of War

Epic orchestra into a cinematic trailer with a closeup reveal of Kratos rocking a beard in a new setting that then turns into gameplay that shows a new direction for the series.

It's between God of War and TLoU Part II. Can't choose which one was better because one was full of epic and the other full of feels.

Has to be Spider-Man.

As soon as that voice came on it was simply magical.

Despite the rumours it was so out of nowhere as well.

1: Sonic Mania/Sonic 2k17
2: Dad of War

While GoW looks great, Sonic Mania was the top of the pops for me. It looks like a proper sequel to Sonic 3&K, with Sonic 2k17 looking like Generations 2. Can't wait for my fill of Sonic goodness.

Nothing for me. Most of the stuff we saw coming or it was leaked. Or it was stuff that didn't show any gameplay. A big factor of a reveal is how excited I get from it. I didn't feel that this year.

Death Stranding has been outstanding, but it still bugs me that we have no idea what the actual game is. Kojima's spent the past year making trailers and talking in high-minded philosophy about connections... but I don't see how this becomes an actual game in any reasonable period of time. I feel like we're settling in for two years of frustrated silence on Death Stranding, before we finally see gameplay - just to let out a collective "That's it?".
