So what's the digital/physical split on GAF?

All physical *

* If I happen to get a digital game for free, I'll play it, but I'll never pay for a download.

PC is all digital. Even when you buy physical it tends to just lead to something linked to a service like Steam that makes the disk worthless as soon as you use it.

Console is just whichever has the cheapest offer. I have a mix of both.

PS4 owner here. I prefer digital because I can share my game library with a close buddy of mine so we always split prices in half, even for PS+ subscriptions.

Across the forum I'd be willing to bet it's a large spectrum; and would average to be 50:50.

Personally that's probably my split.

I go physical whenever possible on console and handheld. For PC, I'm mostly digital.

I even go the extra mile to import a physical version if the US version is digital only, which is happening with alarming frequency lately...

Digital for the most part.

2DS: 52 digital - 1 retail (Curtain Call)
n3DS: 1 retail (Xenoblade)
Wii U: 45 digital - 1 retail (Nintendoland)

Wii U - All digital

PS3 - All digital

PSV - Some physical, mostly digital

3DS - Mostly physical, some digital (I tend to take more of a risk buying into new experiences on the 3DS more so than any other console, so I buy physical in case I don't enjoy the new games)

PC - All digital, mostly Steam, some DRM-free

Books - Fiction all digital on Kindle, but all my mathematics & computing texts remain physical (would prefer digital but they are poorly optimised for Kindle)

I'd rather not have walls & boxes full of games, films & books - makes me feel overburdened.

I used to go primarily physical last gen, about 70% of the time. This gen I'm actually about 80% digital, due to mandatory installs removing the savings on storage-space.

My Wii U has the most discs, and a lot of old Wii games. Since Nintendo print nice discs and manuals. But I've still moved towards digital there as well thanks to convenience and a 1TB HDD. I'll be getting Zelda and Yoshi physically though.

I was thinking bout this the other day. At the moment the only PS4 digital games I own(that had a physical release) are Ground Zeroes and the free game of Plants vs Zombies from EA. I got roughly 16 discs on the PS4 but Ive made a decision to limit the physical games to my favorite single player games only. Having the mp games, fighting games, racing games etc on digital tap can be easier for me to join friends games quick smart. I dont trade games in or sell them second hand so that aspect of being "stuck" with digital purchases wont bother me.

Been 100% digital on PC for a very long time now, not sure my discdrive even works anymore tbh.

On the PS3 I was pretty much Physical only, and now on PS4 I'm 70-80% digital.

Getting Steam syndrome on the PS4 with buying shitloads of games on PSN sales, and not playing them...

Mixture. While I prefer physical, if the digital price is too good to be true, I don't mind paying for it.

Also if some games are digital exclusives in the West like niche games (Ace Attorney 5, Corpse Party, Brandish) then I'll support those as well.

On current-gen consoles, if you intelligently time your purchases of high-budget games, your playing of them, and trading them back in, then you can reduce their price to £25-30 on average – about the same as PC.

If you buy all digital, you're looking at £50-55 for every single high-budget new purchase. If you want to get a new AAA game a month, that's like £150 over quarter of a year. But if you buy physical and trade in intelligently, it's like £80 or so, but that saving just keeps on going if you can chain trade-ins consistently.

I love that I can access the few games I went digital on (sure-wins like GTA VR and TLoUR) immediately. it really is fantastic. But the highest-barrier price-point is just a no-go for me. I'm staying physical this gen unless games are on a really good deal - like Tomb Raider reboot remaster for £12. That is sick on current-gen.

Also Destiny. Destiny pretty much turned me off buying anything digital ever without knowing what it's like first. £55 down the fucking drain.

Im all digital on Xbox One, game sharing rocks. Im all digital on ps4, only got a couple of games though. Im all digital on PC, as it should be.

Last-gen stuff is mostly physical ofc but I cant remember last time I bought a physical game for 360. Must be 2012 or 2013. Last physical game for ps3 was the last of us at launch, after that I bought demon souls digitally as the final game of last generation.

In short: all digital on all current platforms.

All physical, digital seems pointless to me. I play games for me (online game-sharing and all that stuff is just not applicable to me) and even of I don't generally sell my games, I'd like the option. Digital games have zero value in my eyes. I'll only buy digital if I have no other option, like with Legend of Grimrock II (which was my goty of 2014).

/edit: I should clarify that I don't play too many newer games anymore (AAA gaming these days is generally just rehashes and shallow gameplay) and I gravitate more and more towards older games where digital often isn't an option.

My Wii U has the most discs, and a lot of old Wii games. Since Nintendo print nice discs and manuals. But I've still moved towards digital there as well thanks to convenience and a 1TB HDD. I'll be getting Zelda and Yoshi physically though.
Nintendo stopped prining manuals as well, if you're lucky you'll get a flyer in the box, but that's it.

/edit: sorry about the double post.

I only buy digital when physical isn't an option, at least 99% of the time.

Same here.

Sometimes I'll skip out on digital-only games that I'd otherwise be interested in. I'd probably have all of the existing Sega 3D Classics if we had received a physical compilation like Japan did, but I haven't bought any of them.

A mix.

It depends. If I plan in advance to buy a game, I go with the cheapest, so often physical through amazon. If the US release is way earlier than the European one, digital, If I forgot, if I am lazy, and I want a game without leaving the house, digital. Sales also get me to buy more digital games.

And PC is 100% digital.

Consoles? Physical outside of the odd digital only title and PS+ games. Digital prices for full titles are ridiculous in the UK (and everywhere in general). £55 for something I can get at retail for £35 on release... Don't be daft.

PC is pretty much digital only.

I think the last physical game I bought was Half-Life 2. I play exclusively on PC these days, so digital tends to be the cheaper and more convenient choice. If I had a console, I would probably buy physical instead though.

Physical on console unless a sale price is practically giving it away.

Digital on PC, but I only buy games on sale. Last 6 purchases on steam: mortal kombat komplete, injustice gods among us, lego lord of the rings and Marvel for $5 each, spelunky and brothers tale of 2 sons for $3.74 each. At that level its basically pocket change no-brainer level. I'll probably pick up the KOTOR games for $2.99 this week.

Mostly digital on vita if the price is right, and physical on 3ds because of Nintendo's account system.

I mostly buy indies these days so mostly digital by default. But for retail games I usually buy the disc because PSN prices are fucking insane. Give me price parity with retail and I'd go all digital no questions asked. I am pretty much all digital on Vita though.

All physical for me on PS4, all digital on Vita. For me its a variety of reasons for physical on PS4, but mainly:
- they're usually cheaper because PSN is basically a digital distribution monopoly;
- I don't really want to upgrade my HDD just to download games; and
- the game sizes are enormous and take forever to download on my internet connection and use heaps of my data quota.

Finally, call me old fashioned, but I like having discs and boxes.

Unless there's a really great sale on digital, I'll always choose physical. I prefer the freedoms that have always come with physical ownership.

I think we've already had a lot of threads like this one recently, but did anyone actually ever bother to count the votes? Would be nice if OP could do that. ;)

Anyway: All physical on both PC and consoles.

Mix 'n matchin'

For console games (just PS3/WiiU to be fair) I'd like to be able to bring my copy to someone else's place for the rare multiplayer meet ups. Being able to lend/borrow stuff is great too. Still have plenty of eShop only downloads too tho.
Most PC games I play only have online multiplayer and are (way too) cheap so I have less of an issue with going full digital there.

All physical.

(Final Fantasy VII is the only digital game I have, though I also owned it physically for like 16 years -- and still do -- before buying it digitally.)

If a game only exists digitally, I won't be playing it. I'll live.

PC: 95% digital, only some very oldschool physical games.

PS4: 75% digital, but I bought the console just a couple of months ago and only have 4 games. lol
