So who is the worst Star Trek captain?

People putting Sisko remotely near the top of a best captains list.....so much wrong.
You're right he shouldn't be near the top, he should be at the top.

It's hard to put Sisko in the list, because his series is so different than the others. But, if I had to pick a Captain to serve under, it would be him. I feel he had the best balance of characteristics - he was the working man's captain, and seemed to balance the highest callings of Star Fleet with the realities of existance better.

So, using that standard, i feel Janeway was the worst. I'd be terrified to be part of her crew because there was no condistancy in her decision making.

Captains in Star Trek are pretty solid. It's a trope that it's the admirals or flag officers that are the truly whacked out ones (hell even Kirk becomes an idiot when he's promoted and gets his butt whooped by Khan.)

I have to say probably the captain I'd least like to serve under of the main characters is Sisko. If I saw I guy acting like him I'd assume he's having major manic-depressive episodes.

Yeah, pretty much. Avery Brooks seemed like he had two modes to his acting. He'd either be sleepwalking through a scene, or he'd have this halting, yelling delivery that seemed like he was going for a really angry cadence while trying to suppress hiccups.

I'd also throw a shit fit if he told me to pilot our lone ship into a wormhole to take on an entire Dominion battle fleet.

Janeway is the worst. I didn't like Sisko at first(because of the actor) but he really grew on me. I just pretend that movie Picard never happened.

Kirk's obviously the best. You got the dashing, heroic Kirk on the TV show. And then you got the somewhat more grounded, fallible, yet still heroic Kirk in the movies. Both are good Kirks.

Picard was a great sort of elder statesman on the TV show. But movie Picard was awful.

So 2/2 Kirk beats 1/2 Picard. It's just math, guys.

Janeway. Archer is pretty bad too but Janeway takes the absolute worst spot for me. Enterprise had some nice characters like Doctor Phlox while Archer being the worst in the show. These last two years I've done a rewatch of all Star Trek again and it's definitely Janeway. She did more fucked shit than Archer. Archer was bad first two seasons but his character got a lot better the last two, the last two seasons of Archer is better than the entire captaincy of Janeway. Fact.

Ain't got no time for Janeway, she wasn't a leader either, go watch how many times she had to give explicit orders to the crew to obey, other captains it never happened or very rarely. For Janeway it was all the time. Crew didn't want to carry out her orders because she was terrible and they all knew it.

Janeway is the most incompetent and genocidal captain going

The way it's written Voyager wouldn't have even been a series with a competent captain, as a competent captain wouldn't have destroyed the array before it had taken voyager home in the series debut.

She had three options:

a)Load the array with timed explosives
b)Stay behind on a shuttle and make sure it was destroyed, sacrificing herself for the crew
c)Destroy the array and strand voyager in the delta quadrant

she choose option c[razy]

And then she went on to murder people (tuvix) and straight out change trillions of lives because she didn't like what happened to tuvok (Endgame)

he also made Worf respected

Like when he told Worf he would never captain a ship lol

Best captain is pretty hard. Definitely Kirk or Sisko though. Picard was a bit too detached when he shouldn't have been at times

The only bad decision I can remember Archer making was not providing that gene therapy cure to the alien race in Dear Doctor.

There was a fan rewrite of Voyager that spanned the first few episodes that I read a few years ago that would have made things a little more comprehensive for Janeway's character, in my opinion. She wasn't the Captain, rather a Lieutenant Commander/Science Officer that had command forced on her when they were sent to the Delta Quadrant, which made sense as to why all her decisions were batshit insane because she had no idea how to command.

He also let his dog piss all over an important alien artifact in the first season. I agree with a post above though, he got much better by the 3rd and 4th season.

Janeway was nuts and Archer stupid. Not a easy pick. But I like Quantum Leap a lot more than I like Mrs. Columbo, so Janeway it is...

Was Janeway a first officer/commander? I just recall she was the science officer for Tom Paris's dad. and it doesn't seem to be a requirement even in Starfleet to carry the rank of captain to be in command of your own starship (Sisko). Did she just get a promotion because Voyager was essentially a scout ship?

On the show she was always a captain, and early in her career she served under Tom's Dad.

Couldn't stand Enterprise so I'll drop Quantum Leap in the bottom spot but Janeway is close due to my just slightly-less-than-Enterprise level hate for it.

From best to worst:

1 - TV Picard
2 - Shatner movie Kirk
3 - TV Kirk
4 - movie Picard
5 - Sisko
6 - new movie Kirk
7 - Archer
8 - Janeway

Okay, the last two seasons of Enterprise were good enough for Archer to rise a spot or two, but the first two were boring and bad enough to drop him right back. Picard is greatest even if the character was a bit weird during the first TNG season, and the movies made him too aggressive and emotionally unstable. Shatner's Kirk was truly great in the movies. Even in Generations he was the best part.

The thing with Janeway is that she was in a completely different situation to all the other captains, all the others had StarFleet to fall back on, i tended to see her as more of a mother figure, the crew was much more of a family than on the other ships & she had to be more than a captain, she was also made an admiral not long after getting back to Earth.

For me the worst has to be Archer.

Picard.
Janeway.
Sisko,
Kirk.
Archer.

100% correct.

If Voyager was such a "family" why did she only go back far enough to save the people she gave a shit about? To say nothing for the children of crew members that were wiped from existence just because she felt bad that Chakotay and Seven died.

The problem with Janeway was that she was written as a broderline Mary Sue because the writers were absolutely terrified of making the woman captain look weak. All interesting conflict with the half Maquis crew was removed from the show and only the subject of 2 or 3 episodes because everyone had to love Janeway. The fact that she is not a tactician and her new first officer is head of a guerrilla force is never an issue as Chakotay is pretty much just Janeway's yes man for seven years. She is always right, and everyone else is always wrong.

SFDebris put it pretty well. "Voyager is where good ideas go to die"

Trick question: there were no bad captains.

Except maybe Kirk.

No idea why that guy gets so much love.

Agreed. He was a huge egomaniac, a womanizer, and a giant dick to his entire crew (I haven't seen the movies, so I can't comment on him there). I'm currently watching TOS with my girlfriend, and all I can think when I'm watching is 'why does everyone think he's the best?'

Picard, on the other hand, is easily the best. Well-respected, level headed, and he has an awesome voice, too. Also, I think people are being a little harsh toward Janeway. I think she was a better captain than Kirk was.

Janeway. I don't know if it's even close. It was mostly for her voice though. Very poor casting IMO. PEACE.

They originally cast a much older French Captain for Voyager's pilot. Much more in the mold of Picard, but female.

Trust me, Mulgrew was a huge improvement by comparison.
