Someone just refused to take a picture

Her response is out of the ordinary but not rude.

Not everyone behaves the same in social situations. She didn't blow up or be aggressive towards you or anything, so I'd pay it no mind.

It's rude and pretty outside the norm, I'd say. I've traveled alone a lot and asked strangers to snap photos of me plenty of times across Europe, never had a single person ever say no.

How is it rude to say no to something I absolutely don't wanna do? I think it's rude for you to assume I'm entitled to take a picture for your ass just because you asked.

I'd hate to know how you react to something that the rest of the human race actually finds borderline rude. Do you get in to a lot of arguments with people thinking like that?

It's not that I think she owes me anything, it's just me trying to put myself in her situation and imagine why I would ever refuse a simple request from a passerby that has the possibility of making them happy with almost zero effort from myself. I guess it was the lack of kindness that jarred me? Is this something I shouldn't expect from people? Sorry if expecting that is "entitlement", but :/

As I kind of expected typing it this is already by far the most popular thread I've made in years here. Asking people to take a picture may be the new tipping.

Wtf is wrong with you? Sometimes people have shit to do or don't want to interact with strangers.

If you look and behave as strange as you are coming across in these posts then I'd swerve taking a picture for you as well.

Goodness gracious.

I've also never seen anyone refuse to take a picture, hell, I've seen plenty of people actually ask if we needed them to take a picture for us.

They don't have to take a picture but it seems a bit rude to say no.

If politely saying "no" to a yes or no question from a stranger is rude, asking a stranger to take a picture of you is the height of incivility.

When I was in Tokyo, a photographer in front of the summer palace refused to take a picture of my family because he would only photograph Japanese.

Welcome to Japan; about half the people don't like foreigners of any kind. Even hotels will refuse you service!

A picture.

If you ask someone you don't know for a favor, you don't get to be annoyed if they say no.

Maybe she didn't want to touch your grotty phone?

Really? You really couldn't think of a reason she didn't want to take your picture and jumped to "rude"? Maybe she had a lot on her mind, maybe she wasn't comfortable with it, or maybe she just plain didn't feel like doing so. Unless she said it curtly or something like that, then it's not rude to politely decline.

I guess you could wait for a defense force, but... It's looking bleak.
There was a small one forming earlier but I'm feeling pretty stranded out on the island of 'doing small nice things for strangers is expected in a civilised society.'

I rarely get into arguments with people.

She said no, and that's end of discussion.

Wow.

Guess you've never been in a scenario when someone runs off with your camera. What would you do?

you know OP, the two examples you gave of what she should of said is still just two longer versions of "no, sorry"

God I hate taking peoples picture. Next person to ask me to take their picture I'm either smashing the camera or running away with it.

A stranger is expected to take a picture of you? Are you fucking kidding?

Oh god lmao.

You were not laying on the pavement bleeding out asking for help. Get over yourself.

Because there's a thing called common courtesy for your fellow human being who is just looking for some help. You do you, though.

I feel like a lot of people in this thread have a distinct misunderstanding of the definition of "rude".

I was visiting China and some teenage girls tried to sneak up either side of me while their friend ahead took a picture.
I motioned to just take it and posed. No idea whatsoever why they wanted a picture with random guy.
