But... I'm in California and I see people wearing it. Also, CA > every state other than HI.

But.. I.. :(

A cousin of mine used to live there. It's a seriously dumpy place. His dad ended up joining some crazy biker gang while they lived there. Then he got a MySpace to show off all his "bitchin" tattoos.

He's 60. Poisoned, I tell you!

The funny thing about Hollister is that only people outside of California wear it. Because if you live in California you know what a trailer trash dump that place is.

Also, avoid text on shirts at all cost. I'm guilty of this myself (I fall for cute bs), but there are too many reasons to list. The jerk who reads it out loud. People staring at your non-existent boobies while talking. Avoid!
that's not true. i see it all over the fuckin place almost anywhere in california

Oh, there's a lot of shit places here. But there's a lot of shit places everywhere. Except Maui. And possibly Duckburg.

I see tons of shit like that at Urban Outfitters. I don't know what's worse, those or the grampa sweaters.

holy shit:

Some of you guys reek of nerd. I mean serioursly, wal-mart? target?

Don't you guys like looking good?

No, just some of us aren't stupid enough to pay big money for a shirt with a specific name on it.

I just get clothes that fit and don't look heinous. I leave the looking fabulous to my woman and then I just look better by proxy. Or the lucky nerd nailing the hottie. Either way I win and my bank account is fatter.

Those guys shame my state. Though that is how most of the suburban Jersey areas are these days. Eh.

Those shirts look like something my grandfathers would have worn, except for the fucked-up collars.

i fully expected this to be about high fashion and how impractical styles actually make it on the runway but whatever.

Ask robertsan21

robertpinktop.jpg

(i'm actually not ragging on robertsan here even though i still think that shirt's just wrong.)

Gotta hand it to Europe though. Lots of great progressive fashions even if i some of it's a little too much for my tastes.

Edit: There's really nothing too wrong with Target's clothes for the price. Same with Old Navy. i just make it a habit to buy off season when the clearances hit and i don't buy all my clothes from there. And there's certain things i typically just don't buy from either store unless i really like them, like button up shirts. i end up ironing them and they still look bad/wrinkled unless i starch them, and that's too much work.

Yeah, I expected it to be about how some popular designers can manage to make the hottest women look completely unappealing.

What kinda shitholes do you guys live in that you consider Hollister, Von Dutch and Abercrombie part of noteworthy/expensive fashion? Definitely not 'fashion'-like. More like.. trashy, generic and overpriced. I'm in NYC.. don't spend much on clothing really and don't buy the best/priciest brands, but I certainly wouldn't be buying the shit at Target, Walmart, or Kmart. That stuff is equally as bad (in its own way) as the Abercrombie stuff. There are many good, affordable in-betweens for someone on a budget to fall back on.

I thought this also and guess that's why I got caught off-guard with the actual shit mentioned.

some people dont really care though. i can go buy cat food, my weeks groceries, a new video game, and a new shirt all at the same store.

target is where it's at.

Right on both counts. I see plenty of douchebags wearing Holister clothes here.

My girlfriend's parents though I was a poor slacker/loser because I didn't dress like this (they're all from New Jersey).

That's Jersey? I always thought that pic was Europe somewhere. What a bunch of clones.

Edit: Jeez . . . having the same shirt and hairstyle wasn't enough . . . they all have to wear the same facial expression. It is kinda scary.

Don't expect fashion to make sense. It doesn't.

Fashion is nothing but high school clique-ish behavior on a grand scale.
Pretty much. I gave up on making sense of it years ago. Just stick with classic men's fashion and what looks good on you. That never goes out of style.

New Jersey is a very scary country.

See, this is a hilarious, incredibly misinformed post right here. People don't buy clothes because of status, and they don't pay more for items because of a name tag. They spend more money on a better quality item. I'll put it in context: You spend more money on a certain video card because it's a better quality board. Just because you go to the mall and see overpriced/underdesigned/poor quality clothes doesn't mean that a pair of designer jeans you've never heard of can't be worth $200.

Exactly. Over the years, I've come to appreciate a pair of denims that cost $200 and are so comfortable compared to cheaper ones.

Also, certain brands just have the style that you feel comfortable with so you tend to rely on them more. I would try to minimize giant-sized logo on shirts though but sometimes it is unavoidable :/

It had better be over a lot of years with the same pair.

Are abrecrombie and American eagle clothes big everywhere else, cuz they are in my town 70%of teenagers where em. I checked out the abercombie site and it's 40 bucks for a regular old shirt, i could buy 3-4 band shirts for that price(2 form a major retailer). 110 for a zip-up sweatshirt i could buy 3 for that price. 108 dollar jeans, there's no way you could tel me that those are worth the money ore look any better than a 20$ wal-mart pair. Its insane these things are just status symbols. People would drive 5 hours to different city and buy 2 shirts for 100$.

Honestly, if you live in NYC, your options for everything are instantly better than most of us.

Someone else beat me to it, but it's not always an issue of paying more just to pay more. It's about getting better quality. i'm just gonna toss out Diesel because that's a brand i can remember ATM, but if you can honestly tell me that a $20 pair of American Pride (or whatever Walmart brand is) jeans feels and looks as good as a $100 pair of Diesels, well, i just have no words. Target's as low as i'll go with jeans, and they have to be on clearance and look good for me to pull the trigger. That's rare. Don't get me wrong, i grew up without much money, so stores like Walmart and JC Penney were pretty much essential, But once you have clothes that actually fit your body and feel good while doing so, you don't want any less.

Jokes aside, yes, denims which I bought 4-5 years are still far from looking worn out. But I've toned down in those years so some are a bit loose now :( I've bought cheaper denims also during certain emergencies and those definitely age much faster.

Why the hell are you hanging out at middle schools looking for the latest fashion trends bjork? Holister is teeny bopper fashion at best. Fuck I live in the midwest and know that.

I like old man sweaters, cardigans and their ilk.
Yeah, same here. Grandpa sweater + button down shirt and tie.

I don't like those deep v necks though. I thought those were only for gay men?

Welcome to the wonderful world of branding. You don't wear Hollister to be a walking billboard. You wear Hollister because you think it looks nice and you (consciously or subconsciously) associate it with the lifestyle that they promote. Branding has the power to give you a certain sense of security and belonging. Superficial? Sure. But so are a lot of things that make life more interesting. It's not about practicality, it's about image.

Absinthe said:
Because this society is all about status. We don't think about things in terms of practicability. I've found that Target shirts are just as durable, if not more, than popular brands, yet people are insistent on paying for a name. It's a shame that a lot of people can't progress past a high school mentality. I generally don't associate with people that place such an emphasis on clothing.
So true. My friend bought an iPod just because he thought it was a status symbol. :lol

Let me rephrase that. I can see how paying 6 times as much for a pair of jeans can be worth it, if they fit and look really really good and are a perfect pair than ya I'm down that, but I highly doubt if they are that much better than regular old pair. i find it ridiculous that someone would pay so much for something that unneseccary.

I don't get shirts like these either. They're disgusting unless your like perfectly ripped. Better than that shirt is that dude's stach.

I wear umm skater clothes mostly. I shop at Pacsun, Express for men and other random places like that.

EDIT: I am in no way a good dresser. Thankfully my gf tries to help me.

I like wearing game clothes :D I bought an awesome Zelda jacket at Hot Topic (don't shoot) and an awesome Nintendo Gamer shirt at Target :D

Actually, I'm wearing the latter in my pic in the picture thread :o

And some of you think hollister is bad....

What i hate about 'fashion' is that people will wear pretty much anything so long as it's the 'in' item. For example those stupid fucking bug eyed sunglasses, honestly here in Australia I'd say like half or more of the girls aged 25 and younger wear them. One of my friends was showing me her new pair just the other day, i swear it took up half her face:lol .

I don't get how American Apparel is better than clothing from Target. It reeks of cheap and poorly cut. If I'm paying that much for a t-shirt it better be fitted.

I like Hollister.
Their shirts are comfortable and durable.
Not a big fan of clothes with huge brand names on them though. Why advertise for "the man"?

But whatever. Fashion is subjective. Unless you dress like a nerd.

I like coming home to see one of my threads on top of OT. :D

Anyway, perhaps "fashion" was the wrong term to use, because I know hollister isn't cutting edge FASHION or whatever. But it's what I see worn around here, and I dunno what other term to use, so nyeh. :p

The Hollister thing sounds like the JL "epidemic" Sweden had a few years back, at least it has died down since then.

Personally I prefer to buy clothes that's a bit more expensive, in general they seem to last longer than the cheap stuff I buy now and then. The expensive stuff are usually more comfortable too.

God I hate all those over priced shops. I can't believe people pay so much for freakin t-shirts and worn out torn up jeans. T-shirt and jeans is more my style. Its comfortable and looks decent. I mostly wear band shirts that I've gotten at shows. The other week there were some of those hollister jerks at the college actually scouting for trendy jerks to work at their new store it was pathetic.

I have the fortune (misfortune?) of being able to wear children's clothes. Mainly just pants, but sometimes shirts/jackets/coats. Jeans are much cheaper, a $79 pair of jeans (regular old Levi's) is $19... insane.

I pretty much wear the clothes I have had since middle school, which is apparently a long time ago. Cross Country/ Track meet shirts, summer camp shirts, etc. I do like Target though, they have nice, tasteful stuff. Unlike Wal-Mart, which seems to only have t-shirts with "witty" sayings printed on them. Like, "I lost my number, can I have yours?" Yes, Target gives me the choice to not wear that, and that is were Target succeeds.
