Sonic 4 Episode 2 leaked on Steam

Eh. Sonic CD wants to have a word with you. Sometimes it felt as if they made the enemies purposefully hard to see so that they fade into the background....

Well, okay, yeah. But I didn't get a Sega CD until well after the Playstation era began, and I'm not super fond of it, so I never really lump it in with the Genesis games.

And yeah, the review I wrote for Sonic CD literally says:

It would seemingly appear that all of the annoying level design trends experienced in the Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush games were actually secretly adapted from Sonic CD, which has no qualms presenting you with a spring that will launch directly in to a bed of spikes hidden off screen, or outright punishing you for running a little too fast without knowing what’s ahead.

So I'd agree with you 100%.

Has anyone made a picture compilation of every Bubbles homing attack chain in Episode 1 yet? Because I saw at least FOUR CHAINS in those two Episode 2 videos.

Really?

Watching Tails transporting Sonic underwater, and the bubbles coming out behind him + the 'bubbling' sound makes it look like he's farting

My opinions from what I've seen in the available videos so far..

Metal Sonic Mad Gear zone - YEESH! He moves more artificially than Sonic did in Sonic 4. At least he has the excuse of being a robot. He's pretty dang fast though.

Spaeking of, I love the sound effects given to him. Whether he's speeding off or gets hit, it sound very metallic and artificial.

Is it just me, or is most of the level just the exact same as what we've already played? Even in design it look identical.

Sylvania Castle Act 1 - Diggin' the music this time. They seem to have cheated a little and jazzed it up with a few extra instrumentals almost to a point where it no longer sounds like what a Genesis can do.

Level design seems very straightforward. Most likely due to being a first act.

Sylvania Castle = Act 2 - Music's still really good.

Sonic barely touches a wall and it crumbles to dust. Pretty fragile walls there.

The level design seems quite a bit better from the previous act. some good platforming and underwater parts.

Tails submarine mode makes it look like he's shooting bubbles out of his ass. Gassy Tails mode confirmed.

Yeah, Sonic CD always seemed like they got B-side levels from an older sonic game and then sit a toddler down in front of the level editor with a mouse and let the kid randomly add shit everywhere.

Yeah, I noticed it sounds like they remixed Aquatic Ruin (which makes sense, since the level is basically that + Marble Garden)

Level design/ obstacles are looking better...but I thought they said they changed the physics?

Please stop making semi-automated slopes in areas where they arent necessary.

I bet £100 you can't roll up that slope with a full spindash either.

Also look at that air dash move, "oh no you are in water you have lack of speed.... oh wait no problem run at normal speed it's ok"

Heh, the funny part is, there is a spring hidden in the bushes on the left, so that should have been enough to propel him up the slope. Or at least that should have been the deciding factor if you couldnt get enough speed normally. Find hidden spring, save yourself from drowning.

EDIT: I'm with Lyphen. Generations DLC please...at least before the Unleashed porters deliver on their PC mod.

Watching new videos, the call tails anywhere to fly button is way too easy to abuse, wastes time too like the stupid slow super sonic animations in the last few sonic games, yuck.

I love how Act 3 is full of platforms that you have to homing attack before you can use them. Or at least it would be that way, except the level design invariably lets you keep going with just the bounce from the homing attack, so having them be platforms is completely meaningless. Might as well be Bubble chains.

Flying with Tails looks gamebreakingly powerful, but I suppose it's at least a way to dodge the Dimps Pits. Rolling with Tails looks clunky and redundant with functions the spindash should be able to handle.

Music is still Senoue not getting it, but Act 2 isn't bad. Reminds me more of a Castlevania tune though.

Watching that guy skip some of the platforming with the tails flying mechanic was about as painful as the homing-platforms mechanic. Especially in the middle of the video where he just kept making it harder on himself for no good reason.

EDIT- Started the Boss video. My ears cannot believe it.
EDIT EDIT-
I do like how they try to trick you into thinking its going to be a rehash of the Aquatic Ruins boss
Spoiler'd in case anyone cares about surprises in this game.

Ha ha, I remember being stuck for a while in the first episode on some half pipe because of this.

:(

Why does Sega keep giving DIMPs work? Their last Sonic game that wasn't absolute shit was Sonic Advance 1. That was TWO GENERATIONS AGO.

Whats the point of bosses if you're just going to give the players all the tools to fucking trounce them from the getgo.
Tails Flying + Homing Attack is practically cheating through the console levels of gamebreaking.

Worse yet, unless the boss drops its head down, that seems to be the way you're supposed to fight him. Of course we'll never know for certain since everyone will have killed the boss by that point.

I'm liking what I see, honestly. The music's horrible, and that hurts the heart like nothing else, but the game looks great visually, and seems to play alright.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but here goes:

In my opinion at least, Sonic was never that good a franchise to begin with. Adding all that useless extra side characters did not help.

This was a game from and for the 90s.

It seems pretty clear to me that they don't know what to do with Sonic anymore. I have a suggestion: Let him rest in peace and move on.

Maybe the music is beta too...
I can hope

So speaking off the boss (I'm spoiling something about it)
its not a hammer. That means DIMPS now can't even get their tradition of "first boss uses a hammer-thing" right

White Park Act 1 looked kind of alright when it wasn't being blatant hold right sections

He drops his head down a few times at the start before the player goes into Tails abuse, so maybe they did intend for you to stay on the ground.

I don't understand Sonic games. It's simply no fun if you're jumping and the ram into enemies which you simply could not see because they were outside of the viewable on-screen area...

What Sonic games have you even played? The Genesis games never gave me that trouble, at least not a lot.

Music is still kinda ehhhhh. Act 2 of White Park seems to have a bit of
Twinkle Park
mixed into it, which is neat, I guess.

Best fragment of music in the game so far.

A shame that the level on rails is rather literally on rails. At least it's not minecarts.

And that's kinda funny since this level is a ripoff of the only classic Sonic level to feature
a hammer boss.

Response from the Sonic 4 Brand Manager Ken Balough:
Hey Guys,

Well it just wouldn't be a proper Sonic 4 game without a code leak!

As I'm sure most of you saw this morning, there was a slight error where a very small amount of people who pre-ordered the Steam vesion were able to download Beta 8 version of the game.

So let's come out and talk about it.

Yes, it did happen, and yes its unfortunate. However I'd like to ask that people not judge too much what they see from these videos. Beta 8 is a was very early Beta from SEGA and is filled with Bugs that are fixed in the final version.

With Episode II we wanted to support the PC users in a huge way, and that's why we are releaseing it on May 15th, alongside the console versions.

From my side, on a personal level, I would only ask, for those of you who did get the early Beta 8, try not to post too much stuff if you can. There is a huge group of awesome fans eagerly awaiting this game, and I don't want to spoil the surprises that Episode II has in store. It's kind of like someone telling you spoilers to a film you have been hyped to see. There are sites our there that you can do that in if thats what you choose, but try not to spoil it for our awesome Sonic community here.

Thanks again everyone!

Ken

The Genesis games were excellent, as was Sonic Generations.

I'm pretty sure this whole "Sonic was never good in the first place!" meme is just pieces of shit like Heroes and Sonic 06 making the rest of the series look bad by comparison.

Sonic 4 meanwhile is in its own category of suck. It doesn't rise to the level of the Genesis games, it's not as bad as the worst of the franchise, it's just a little package of mediocrity wrapped in nostalgia paper for a quick buck.

It's a mashup of Wing Fortress and Death Egg. It uses one of the worst Sonic gimmicks of all time: the Death Egg ring teleporter things :(

Also, not every level has to have loops, Dimps, let alone 3 in a row.

Yeah, I hate those teleporter things.

Those three loops were absolutely pointless. One would have been fine.

Well Generations HD ( See here and here ) and Colors are both well made and really fun/great to look at games with exceptional soundtracks. So honestly it's just Sega going backwards a few steps, outsourcing projects like this to Dimps. Looking at the last two major console releases, Sega does have a good idea of how to handle modernized Sonic gameplay, and a bit of classic as well...however, they just need to stick with that and improve upon it. Not pull a Capcom and let others mess with core franchises...although Dimps wasnt too bad when it came to SFIV and DBZ Budokai 3, they cant be a jack of all trades.

EDIT: Ok, i'll admit that Airship stage got me, teleports aside, that actually wasnt bad at all. Music and graphics included...although the theme does seem abit repetitive.
