Sonic Colors - E3 Trailer + screens

Sonic Unleashed is better than SA1 and 2 gameplay-wise, just put anyone who has never played a 3D Sonic game to compare. The ho-hum reception mostly has to do with the series being at the top of its red-headed stepchild fame at the time and all the other factors we endlessly read about (seeing it ranking lower than Sonic 2006 at some places was outright hilarious). The Werehog certainly didn't help matters even if those sequences were ok, having Knuckles instead and shorter action stages would have helped a lot with how it was perceived.

Tired discussion though. When is the Colors OT going up? Next week?

Has anyone staked a claim on it yet? I don't recall seeing anyone mention creating an OT earlier in the topic, which would account for there not being one yet.

I'll probably do it if someone doesn't beat me to it. It's always first come first serve.

Technomancer said hed do it if no one else claimed it, but chances are willy will do it since he completely disregards if people claim it to continue his quest of making crummy ots with shitty overly large thread logos.

I've said I've got it for like the last few pages :lol
I've got it all written up and graphics made and everything, although if you've got text made I wouldn't mind seeing it.

This Thursday is one week from the Australian release date, so that's what I was going to go with.

Nobody's gonna care if you post it six days before versus seven days before. =P

Any time between AUS Thursday and US Tuesday will be fine.

It's called an opinion, would you like a dictionary definition?

Besides, I'd rather have my eyeballs drilled out than listen to that appalling battle music ever again.

Roger Craig Smith (the new voice of Soinc) has already gotten death threats from Sonic fans :) he talks about it in this video. He says Sonic fans are "passionate"
I wonder how many of those "fans" still think that the announcer is Sonic's voice?

no one knows it actually controls with the wii fit board
You can still play it with the remote but spike tripes are littered everywhere to compensate

Did you play it in 4:3 or widescreen? 4:3 is more zoomed up than widescreen.
Widescreen. I couldn't find a 4:3 mode but I think PS3 only outputs in widescreen via HDMI. It's interesting that 4:3 mode is more zoomed in though cos maybe the gameplay is quite different to what I experienced.

I never thought, Rings or Black Knight were bad for sonic games, especially when considering sonic has NEVER been about polish. It's alway been about fun more so than function, so I never understood why it was always a shock when a sonic game came out and had glaring flaws(some of which were completely stupid). Even the 2D ones were far from what I would call great execution, regardless of how much fun I had with them.

Really? I mean, opinions and all that, but 2 and 3&K are, IMO, some of the most polished and best playing games of the era.

Rings was okay but Black Knight was absolutely horrible. Controls were awful!

Yes I enjoyed the Riders games, sue me.

A Tier: Sonic Adventure 2
B Tier: Sonic Adventure, Sonic Unleashed
C Tier: Sonic Advance 1, Sonic Advance 2,
D Tier: Sonic Advance 3, Sonic Battle, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Heroes
E Tier: Sonic Chronicles, Sonic and the Black Knight
F Tier: Sonic 2006, Shadow the Hedgehog

Fixed for what I personally feel is correct. Also removed the Riders series because that's like including Mario Kart and Party in a comparison of Mario games.

Tier lists aside, though, I have to say I am really looking forward to this game. I was always a Sonic kid growing up, and if this is what I think it is based on the previews (which is to say, Sonic Unleashed's daytime stages with less speed and more platforming in places), then it might actually be the first 3D Sonic game that is good in which you get to play as Sonic alone.

Also, I guess living in the UK has its benefits sometimes. I wonder why Sonic Colours is being released here before the US. Is it because they need to photoshop out the u on the boxart? :lol

Why did he have to use the word "passionate"?

This drums up the image of Sonic Passions, and if you know what that is you'll shudder as well.

I have no problems with the first, and Free Riders doesn't look like hot shit. But again, out of place on that list.

God Tier:
Sonic 2 - Sonic 3&K
"Aww Yeah" Tier:
Sonic 1 - Sonic CD - SA2 - Sonic Battle (fuck yeah) - Rush - Rush Adventure
"...But No Cigar" Tier:
UnleasHD and UnWiished - Advance 1 (pretty good, but kinda 'meh' to me) - Advance 2
"Couldn't Quite Get There" Tier:
Advance 3 - Adventure/DX
"Damn, Son" Tier:
Heroes - Shadow
"Fuck That Shit" Tier:
Chronicles (music absolutely kills it for me. Only like 5-7 good songs)
"Jesus Christ How Horrifying" Tier:
2006

I think they were certainly more than enough as far as polished mechanics were concerned, but it was their level designs and overall fun factor that really pressed me to play them so much. There weren't many games out like that one that I could remember, and most of the ones that were just weren't better than sonic. The music certainly didn't hurt either :D

Well, analog control has always been my biggest problem with 3D sonic(outside of shit like big the cat). It seems as if every iteration has had some very rustic control implementation. Not all of them are horrible, but all of them are very far from what I would call "good" in this day and age. Secret Rings came along and had a completely different take on it, and after some optimizing, it really meshed pretty well with the overall design of the game. Then unleashed and black knight came back with the analog and sent me back in time. I feel like most Sega games do that though. I can't really think of one that isn't a racer which has a really good analog set up.

Seeing as how this has become some fucked up alternate universe where Sonic games are good and Duke Nukem Forever is coming out, naturally Europe will start getting games first.

Sonic has historically been very popular in Europe, thanks to the massive popularity of the Genesis there (I think it outperformed the SNES for a good long time).

Also, US games hit on Tuesday/Wednesday. Unless you're Nintendo, then it's Sunday or Monday.

Not to mention SEGA Europe is who deals with all of SEGA's retail goods now.

All SEGA America does is digital games.

That's really sad when you consider how important the American side of Sega was in the company's history.

not to go off topic but yeh =P
this is old btw
Sega West President Mike Hayes has told IndustryGamers that the company is currently implementing a major restructuring of its North American and European operations. The human cost will be 73 jobs (36 in San Francisco, 37 in London), which represents about 12 percent of Sega West's workforce. It's worth noting that these figures are separate from the recent shutdown of Sega Studios San Francisco.

Sega's San Francisco office will now focus on digitally delivered products for mobile, consoles and PC while Europe will continue focusing on "traditional package goods." Hayes stressed this is "very much administrative reorganization, because clearly we want to be very successful with digital globally. Likewise, we want to continue to be successful with traditional goods." So, to recap, instead of Sega's American and European operations running in parallel, working on retail games in addition to digital titles, each now has a specific market to focus on. Whether this strategy will result in better products and increased sales for the one-time gaming giant remains to be seen, but at least Sega's not sitting idly by.

I look at it in terms of how much entertainment each game has provided, and Sonic 2006 has provided copious amounts of that with the Let's Play and various YouTube glitch videos.

Heroes meanwhile was quite frankly the worst Sonic game ever created. Ignoring the awful story, voice acting, music, boss battles, team fights, camera, special stages and the ridiculous amount of glitches, the fundamental gameplay was completely broken.

Both the speed and power formations are not just useless, they are completely dangerous. Most of the game is spent crawling around in flight formation to avoid being flung off the stage by the over-exaggerated lurches made by power characters attacking, or the skating on ice controls of the speed characters. Latter stages involve little more than flying between numerous combat sections as the game forces you to eliminate giant helmet wearing, hammer swinging robots on tiny platforms.
If you played it mainly as a flight character, you were doing it horribly wrong. Of course that's no fun at all, because they are slow as fuck and only good for security reasons. Sonic Heroes is best played if you always play as Sonic and just briefly switch to the other characters, when absolutely needed. I had lots of fun this way. I wonder how you can get A ranks with just playing flight characters.

Well, sonic heroes is definitely one horrible game. I can't remember one level in that piece of shit that wasn't glitched to hell. I literally tried to like it, but the breaking point was the level that started off with the grind rails in the sky (right after that fuck fest of a pinball level I believe). If it got better after that, I will never find out .
