Sonic Colors - E3 Trailer + screens

Sonic Colors was surprisingly good when I played it a couple times at PAX. I played the Tropical Resort and Planet Wisp stages. Planet Wisp was definitely my favorite. Colors basically plays like a sequel to the HD versions of Sonic Unleashed like we've all suspected. The controls felt great (except for the Sonic Drift move), the Wisps were useful and genuinely fun to use and there are quite a few hidden spots in the levels that you'll probably miss the first time through. The build that was on display included three Stages with two Acts each. A nice little touch they've implemented is the ability to run back and forth on a 2D plane when your score for the completed Act is tallied. You can jumped and flip the numbers around which I'd love to see reveal Extra Points ala Sonic 1 in the final build. If you liked Sonic's stages in Unleashed, you will not be disappointed.

IIRC you can destroy bits of the tally screen for 1ups and such.

You said the drift wasn't good, was it mapped to the nunchuck? Because Sega said they changed it to the B button.
The game prompts you to flick the stick in a specific direction and press B simultaneously. Regardless, the drift is ridiculously unwieldy and hard to use. I pulled off a decent drift just once.

Here's a well-written preview from wingdamage.com

Immediately after playing Sonic Colors, I played Sonic 4. I know Sonic 4 is what all of us jaded, grumpy fans of the Genesis games have been asking for, but after having played both games, Sonic Colors turned out to be the much more interesting of the two. I can only hope that the full version of Colors doesn’t bog itself down with unnecessary elements as so many past games have. If it dodges that bullet, we might have a good 3D Sonic game on our hands.

I also played it at PAX (short preview here) and enjoyed it just as much as I did at E3. It's true that there are a lot of on-rails segments, but I never felt it bordered on too many. They were usually short and spaced out enough that it broke-up the action. The pacing really is fantastic in Colors and it's one of my most anticipated games right now.

Uhh, so no ps3 or 360 versions? Why not?
because it's mainly being developed by the black knight / secret rings team and they are used to the Wii. Iizuka actually said in a interview that they aren't comfortable enough to develop on any other platforms.

Don't worry, there's a big 20th anniversary game in the works ;) Just hope Iizuka doesn't mess it up. He said he's got Crush 40 doing the music for it.

To be perfectly honest, if we never saw Crush 40 again, I would not mind in the slightest.

I suppose you could say that their stuff is better than what we're getting for the Sonic Colors theme music, but if Crush 40 being involved means they're trying to go back to other crusty old Sonic ideals in some sort of ploy to tap in to nostalgia for the Dreamcast games, no thanks - four years later, the wounds from the last "Anniversary" game are still fresh.

Iizuka thinks Sonic is only about attitude and speed

that's all you're gonna get until hes gone.

I'm fine with attitude and speed, really.

But I don't want Sonic Adventure 4. I don't want a story mode with a huge cast of characters, all with intersecting plotlines seen from multiple perspectives. I don't want Dr. Eggman to dig up another ancient evil, only to have the monster turn the tables on him at the last second. I don't care about Shadow the Hedgehog's mysterious past, OR his violent future. I'm sick of Rouge the Bat, and her smokey prostitute voice. I don't want them to try something "epic", "deep", or "mature". This is Sonic the fucking Hedgehog, not Mass Effect.

It is not difficult to imagine somebody within Sonic Team is dreaming up a "grand adventure" that will run out of time and run out of money and end up another half-baked, all-shitty attempt at making something that's beyond their scope.

I want Sonic Team to focus what they are actually good at, and not what they think they're good at. I want them to work within their limitations instead of trying to go in too many directions at the same time.

But I know they probably will anyway.

well, iizuka still the person to blame =P Hes the one who came up with the idea of Sonic having a huge story, said he wanted Sonic to have more RPG elements

here is an interview with him, dunno if you seen it yet, it's pretty old.

Yeah, pretty sure I've seen that interview, and I know he's the person to blame. That's why I know that's probably what is going to happen.

And I don't want it.

Hi everyone and welcome to the next Colours related reveal blog! Wow, all I can say is I’m somewhat surprised how big a fanbase Orbot apparently has, the reaction was big! I was interested in the discussion about Sonic’s “Oops, did I fall on him?” comment in Unleashed, which is a fourth wall breaking moment as such… however in my mind anyway it could’ve been very easily been something said to himself that he just happened to be looking at the camera for. This fourth wall breaker is a very deliberate address to the gamer – that’s you – who is playing the game.

Anyway I bring you seven items you may or may not know about Sonic Colours, in some senses you could very well know about them but they’ve certainly not been confirmed, in other senses there are things you may believe that are false! All will be revealed (well, seven things anyway) in the following formulations of words and letters.

1) Orbot’s compatriot is indeed called “Cubot” as some detectives have been able to deduce. He’s a cube shaped robot – ‘Cube-Bot’, much like Orbot is spherical, (quite literally ‘Orb-bot’ and also an anagram of robot if you hadn’t noticed) who is… er… a little defective shall we say.

2) Since you like Orbot so much, here is his character render in high quality PNG format. He has had a bit of a paint job by the looks of things.

3) FOXY FACT: Tails can read binary fluently.

4) Contrary to reports elsewhere, Amy Rose does NOT feature in the story of Sonic Colours Wii. Seriously, unless she’s become an invisible mute post-Unleashed I’ve seen nothing to indicate otherwise.

5) We will see the “consequences” of Sonic destroying a giant robot… in more than one sense. DUN DUN DUUUNNNN!

6) The curly haired Wisp is called Yacker, he is the Wisp Sonic and Tails communicate with to find out what is going on. A silent guide if you like to the world of Wisps.

I officially award kudos points to Umiyuri incidentally who identified the name first, as far as I can see.

7) Oh, okay then here’s Cubot’s character render too.

I will endeavour to do another one in an amount of time that I shall not specify for fear that might be classified as an announcement. :P Oh yes, I’m already trying to find out details and images and things regarding this European “special edition”, don’t worry. Securing the full version of “Reach For The Stars” + lyrics are also a work in progress… they’ve not put songs in mangas yet as far as I’m aware.

or as Mike Hayes said

We’ve got to make games that appeal to the 7-to-12-year-old which is exactly what Colours will do – and then we need to appeal to the core gamer, which is what Sonic 4 is doing.

The name "Yacker" worries me. It sounds like he's gonna be another Chip or Omachao screaming "Press the A button to jump!" "Did you know if you press the A button to jump and press A again while targeting an enemy, you can do the homing attack?!!" YES I DO KNOW!! STFU!!!

Well the next sentence calls him a silent guide, so maybe he's named ironically.

If they want the whole grand adventure thing, just take the Galaxy route, make a really nice opening cutscene, last stage cutscene, and ending cutscene. Lots of stuff inbetween really isnt necessary, except some really great looking stage backgrounds.

"What I felt was that the franchise had become too serious and the story had become very deep, whereas I see Sonic as more of a laid-back, enjoyable and fun experience. I kind of rediscovered that through Mario & Sonic in a way, because that game was very much a 'pick up and play' affair that everyone can jump in and enjoy. I think that's a better direction for the Sonic brand, and that's why Sonic Colours has a much more fun, enjoyable kind of setting." - Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka

Since some people don't like clicking twice, here's a new single-player video of the Sonic Simulator. (Hunh. Guess you don't need an extra player to play these levels.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb9IUiBplNE&feature=player_embedded

What's cool is after the first level is done, you see that it's an old-school arcade cabinet. Which explains the chiptunes. My God!! I love this game more and more with every single new detail!! It's incredible.

Eggman on Sweet Mountain - "I know it may look delicious, but please refain from licking the rides. That would be disgusting." XD

Tails actually sound like a boy now.:lol

They're running out of time to reveal a game ruining feature. :lol

Huh... an on the mark comment from him... Sonic Colors is being developed in a mirror universe, that's the only explanation.

What's even more interesting is the first level in that video mimics a route through GHZ Act 1. It's not exact, but it's there.

The cue balls he pushes to crush enemies even reminds me of the original GHZ rolling ball obstacle, before it was taken out:

I haven't followed this game because I figured it would just be a bad sonic game but after watching some videos and stuff it actually seems really good. The game's coming out soon and no game ruining gimmick has been shown. I think I'm actually going to buy this.
