Sonic Lost World: Color Power Trailer [dated Oct. 18th in EU, Oct. 22nd in NA]

I can't believe this looks better than Super Mario 3D World. The level design looks more interesting.

So far it looks like 3D World will have better level design and gameplay. 3D World levels look like they will have more going on and require more skill, Sonic is still focusing heavily on homing attacks, speedboosters, and springs. The past 3 Sonic games have had very platforming that, while improved over past 3D Sonics, was very inferior to Mario; and that doesn't look like it's changing here. They'll both be great games, but Mario is pretty much guaranteed to be the better game.

Sonic's always had powerups. That is essentially what color powers are.

Its like dissing Mario 64 because Mario never got powers from hats, or dissing Sunshine because you got upgrades to FLUDD.

Always? Sonic 3 was the first Sonic game to feature powerups that augmented how Sonic played. Sonic 1 and 2 had shields that just let you take a hit without losing rings, speed shoes, and temporary invincibility, 2 had Super Sonic, which was unlockable. Sonic 3's shields only augmented how Sonic already controlled, complimented the platforming, and weren't required.

The problem I have with colors powers is that they radically change the gameplay and are often required to be used.

Why must you taunt classic fans, Sega? :P

I actually feel legitimate excitement for this title. Not fake Sonic hype I try to trick myself into, but the real deal.

Fuck yeah.

The difference between the shields and the Wisps is that the shields actually accentuate the platforming, but with most of the wisps you let you skip the platforming.

The stuff I've seen from Lost world so far has impressed me more then 3D world. It's just a general feeling. There seems to be more variety in Lost world. The graphics look spectacular. The game is also fast as usual. I'm confident that the Mario game will be good too but right now, with what we've seen of both games, Lost world to me looks more promising.

it seems that putting the game on a failing console after two good sonics have calmed things down was the way to go to make a sonic game seem interesting from the get-go again.

You know what? Why doesn't Sonic Team use the carnival trope anymore? It doesn't even need to have the music from CNZ either, I just really liked that trope in Sonic 3.

Guys, I am a fan of the wisp powers in Colors and I'm excited for their return but are you really going to seriously compare them to shield power ups as a defense? Come on...

All we know right now is that we have three Wisp Powers (three returning, three new) and two shields (regular shield and magnetic shield). I'm all for variety, and I love how they seem to be designing stages a lot more with variety design in mind. So many different paths, abilities... options are nice, variety is nice, and I welcome it, especially if it adds rather than takes away, which so far from what I've seen, seems to be the case here. Level design looks improved rather than taken away due both to powers and creative liberties.

Ugh. It annoys me to no end when people equate homing attacks or speedboosters with a lack of required skill. Go play Jungle Joyride in Unleashed and get back to me.

Honestly? I think Sega are going to look at sales of Knack very closely. Im not convinced a graphically demanding Sonic game will be made this generation, least not for years. Why bother when the bulk of sales come from Nintendo platforms anyway?

I think Lost world is a step too far. You could take the detail of unleashed/generations down a notch without throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I think the artstyle of Unleashed worked against in some ways. I mean look at this lighting model

Im not a big graphics guy but damn...Unleashed was too gorgeous a game to throw all that away. The hedgehog engine is still amazing.

Oh btw...Naughty dog and solid framerate don't deserve to be in the same sentence.

SEGA probably has no idea what Knack is, LOL.

More screens here, courtesy of TSS (thanks PhantomOfTheKnight). I'll post them in when Abload's done uploading them for me.

Wow, this game is fucking gorgeous. That will look glorious in 60fps.

Love the "crafty" art design. Some of the levels look like they could've been hand made. Especially that jungle themed one, reminds me a little of Tear Away.

Much more imaginative artstyle than Colors, and Generations from what I've seen so far. Not that those games didn't look great.

Pretty clean rip of music for the first level ^^^^^^

Sounds good, looking forward to the rest of the soundtrack.

The sand level didn't appeal to me much, added to the fact that the tube design is aparently the one for all 3d levels, it was a bit worrying.
The jungle and casino are great though, bright colors and a bit more stuffs on screen.
Right now overall, some things here and there could be more detailed and it's sometimes a bit loose, like sand stage but there's enough work in stylizing forms to make it stand out.

I'm loving the art style in this pic. So clean and crisp and the lighting is actually decent here. Can't wait to see the ice stage.

The game looks superb, almost Mario Galaxy quality - but having made that comparison, I can't help but feel that like Mario Galaxy, it would be made truly special with an orchestrated soundtrack. This summer techno is not doing the game any favours.

Well, the main theme of the game will be orchstrated.

And orchestra doesn't fit Sonic exactly imo, he needs more punky music. Mario has all the classy stuff.

So how the stages will play out so far, each of the worlds has 6 acts

Windy Hill:
Standard first one
Night one
At Sunset one
Ruins one with the stealth owls
Jungle
???

Desert Ruins:
The actual desert
Inside the ruins
Candy stage
Honeycombs
???
???

I don't think the Casio fits in any of the Zones we know of

Well after watching that trailer I'm firmly into the "More screens and info on new Sonic game" stage of the Sonic Cycle.

Am I the only one who thinks this series peaked nineteen years ago with S3&K?

While i still think 3d world will be a much better game (not doubting ead tokyo's game making ability) Sonic loos so much better and i love the artstyle

The more I see of this game, the more my fears of it sucking are laid to rest. It's like they seriously went inside my head and made the 3D Sonic game I've always wanted. Between this, Rayman, DKC: Tropical Freeze and 3D World, I'll be in a platformer fan's paradise this holiday.

.................

Sometimes I think people say shit like this to be on the safe side, or just haven't really analyzed these games.

I don't know what 3 games you've been playing but the past 3 has been pretty skill heavy, very at full speed. It's brutal as fuck to get that perfect run in Generations. Not to mention, as much as I love 3D Marios AND even looking forward to 3D World more that Lost World, I don't get the adrenaline rush from Mario I get from Sonic.

Also Homing attacks does not equal less skill, Knowing how to use it can get you into some surprising places at times, and speed boosters and springs been a part of the series since the beginning, and is nowhere as heavy as they were in the Classic Games, in Lost Worlds, and CD.

I didn't say they weren't skill heavy, just less than Mario. They've been adding platforming, but Sonic's jumps have been really lackluster since he doesn't carry momentum. While improved in Generations, the 2D platforming sections in Colors have level design that's very level-creatorish; which looks to be the case with that candy level and 2D desert ruins level in Lost World.

Speed boosters were only in a few levels in the classic games and level specific; Sonic 1 didn't even have any. Springs are in like every level, but you have to jump on most of them and they generally aren't used to make levels play themselves like modern games use them. Both are way more common in the modern games. The last few games have cut back significantly on springs at least, so that's good. The homing attack takes away skill from having to jump on enemies, which Mario still has to do even in 3D.

As I said, both games look great, but Mario will most likely have the most cohesive design and much better platforming. Some levels like that 2D desert ruins level on the 3DS version look more like a chore than fun due to how Sonic controls and the level design.

CASINO!!!

Someone at SSMB found them.

Gotta repost this for a new page. Sweet Holy Moly that looks amazing! I mean all the screenshots are amazing, but damn that casino stage looks exceptionally hot.

Edit: I kinda wished the Egg Pawns were dressed up in little casino bunny/card dealer garb. :(

There have been some good Sonic games afterwards. Most recently Generations, which was great. But yes, S3&K is definitely the pinnacle of the series, and I doubt that will be changing this year.

3d world will still be the better platformer most likely.

As a single player game? I wouldn't be so sure.

I know Mario games have basically always stomped Sonic in the "which series has better platforming" category, but Nintendo's focus on accessibility and multiplayer could possibly do the same damage to their 3D formula as NSMB did to their 2D formula. Sure it's technically sound, but otherwise it's boring as shit.

Time will tell! As for this moment in time, I'm pretty excited for Lost World and couldn't care less about 3D World.

I would say Sonic and Mario were on par back in the SNES vs Genesis days, hell Sonic was better back then. But NSMBU has the best 2D Mario platforming the franchise has seen with very solid level design and challenge and they finally changed up the level graphics. NSMBU and NSLU are absolute must-plays. The NSMB games haven't sacrificed single player for multi, so that's no concern for 3D World. The trailer for 3D World has shown a really good variety of level designs and themes. There is little doubt that 3D World will be the better platformer because Lost World's platforming for the most part appears to control like Sonic Colors, which was not very good for the platforming.

Lost World may appear more exciting because of the gravity stuff, but so far gameplay and level design look far more solid in 3D World imo.
