Sonic Lost World: Color Power Trailer [dated Oct. 18th in EU, Oct. 22nd in NA]

I always see that Mario was longer but Sonic more fun.

Personally I would consider both 3D World and Lost World about on par. That's Sonic bias speaking tough.

There have been some good Sonic games afterwards. Most recently Generations, which was great. But yes, S3&K is definitely the pinnacle of the series, and I doubt that will be changing this year.

I tried Generations, I did as much as I could take of Generations but it just didn't play like a Sonic game. It was a decent game in its own right but it just doesn't feel like Sonic.

So since we're now back on topic.

I wonder what the multiplayer consist of.

I'm hoping for a longer game than Colors and Generations. Unleashed was a nice length, sadly that was because of the Werehog.

removing the werehog and replacing it with the optional and DLC stages made Unleashed still pretty good volume (bigger than Colors I think)

I always forget that Unleashed got a pretty healthy amount of DLC support, at least I think it was Unleashed. I'm not sure if it was longer than Colors, it probably was, I remember beating Colors in one sitting. Unleashed had hub worlds, and inconsistent loading times that added to the games length. Especially when you had to travel back to previous stages or countries.

High-res!

Loads more in the link.

Wait a sec... these are 1080p shots. Are these native or uprezzed? I thought this game was 720p 60fps.

I would say Sonic and Mario were on par back in the SNES vs Genesis days, hell Sonic was better back then. But NSMBU has the best 2D Mario platforming the franchise has seen with very solid level design and challenge and they finally changed up the level graphics. NSMBU and NSLU are absolute must-plays. The NSMB games haven't sacrificed single player for multi, so that's no concern for 3D World. The trailer for 3D World has shown a really good variety of level designs and themes. There is little doubt that 3D World will be the better platformer because Lost World's platforming for the most part appears to control like Sonic Colors, which was not very good for the platforming.

Lost World may appear more exciting because of the gravity stuff, but so far gameplay and level design look far more solid in 3D World imo.

I gave NSMBU an honest shot after really not liking any of the previous entries. It's a slight step up but still suffers from the same basic problems: reliance on old ideas that are stale by now, playing it safe, a lack of interesting mechanics, insanely played visual themes for the levels, plain ugliness, etc. I stopped after fighting the same boss for the fourth time. And I honestly don't find the level design all that spectacular or memorable. DKCR, Rayman Origins, Little Big Planet, Super Meat Boy, and Kirby's Epic Yarn all had more interesting levels IMO.

When you got games like Rayman Legends and Puppeteer coming up that are bursting with creativity and great gameplay, NSMB just comes across as that much more half-assed. I don't have time for it. Sure the basic mechanics are great, but if you aren't doing anything interesting with the base mechanics, the game isn't worth my time.

Its kind of blows my mind when people say stuff like this. Mario has cover SO much ground over to course of 30 years that I can find a Mario level root in most of the bolded games above. If I wanted to be cynical I'd hate on em, complain that after all these years we can't get too far from classic Mario tropes. But I like games, so I enjoy them for whatever unique spin they have to offer to an old idea. NMB included.

Anywho. Might be the first Sonic game I've bought since S&K. Too bad Rayman Legends. You got bumped.

I disagree. I prefer substance over style. A game can look great but if the mechanics aren't there it's wasted potential. Look at LittleBigPlanet: Looks great, plays like ass. People complain about NSMBU, yet SMW continues to get praise despite being one of the easiest Mario games and being much blander visually in terms of level graphics it makes me think people would prefer Mario if it had no graphics at all.

Style isn't bad, though, and should totally be addressed. I personally think, at least with NSMBU, that they've hit a nice style for Mario. The clean look really fits Mario, and they did an especially great job on the level graphics with NSMBU. To me Lost World and 3D World are about equal in style. Sonic is going for a bit more cartoonish style and both are going for the clean look, with 3D World opting for more detailed textures.

And NSMBU does do new things, especially with star coins. One of my favorite moments in NSMBU was a star coin that required you to drop a koopa shell under water, stop it, wait for it to get back up, and then grab it under water to throw it at some urchins blocking access to a star coin. The Bowser Jr. battles are a treat as well. Then there's challenge mode, which is great.

This may be the next Wii U game I buy unless W101 just blows my expectations away.

I'm both thrilled and shocked that W101 and Sonic Lost World have become my most wanted Wii U games this year. Nintendo has always been my reason for owning their consoles but Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong, although I'm getting both, just don't seem as unique or exciting.

Loving these new casino shots.

.

No, he doesn't. The powers are the worst part of every Sonic game ever.

These powers do seem a bit strange, but I'm not against having them if they are well implemented. That's a rather large "if." Also worth noting that in some of these sections where Sonic has a power, out of context I would have no idea it was still a Sonic game.

I was really into it based on the first announcement trailer and the screen shots and the level layout

Then I saw the new trailer. Those powers look fucking awful. all 3 of them. Took this from a day 1 purchase to waiting for reviews + waiting for a price drop/sale somewhere

the sonic parts looked neat and imo they ruined it

Yes, but now you're implying NSMB objectively has more substance than all the other platformers I named, something I very strongly disagree with. Alas! Let's set aside our differences and stop mucking up these good people's Sonic thread with our OT debate.

Sonic looking good, I'm outta here.

My girlfriend is suddenly talking with a guy who is working on this game and has worked on Sonic Xtreme, which was apparently mostly his project.

Apparently he really has to convince SEGA of certain design elements to keep the quality at a level that is decent.

TSS – Was the unreleased Sonic X-Treme any influence on this game?

Iizuka – No. Not at all. Actually, the developers of this game don’t know about Sonic X-Treme so it’s all new.

You realize that a majority of the Wisps have always been optional right? Colors worked pretty good with them, and the ones that were the worst to use seem to have been removed.

Chris Senn? Hirokazu Yasuhara?

What's up with this game and having worlds with levels so far removed from it's main level trope? I don't mind variety at all, but it still seems kind of weird.
That's how I'm feeling right now. Again, one little thing to make it seem a little cohesive would be nice.

Interesting tidbit there in that Gamespot video. I didn't know this before but according to Aaron Webber this game has been in development since Sonic Generations was being made. They've been working on this for longer than I thought.

Sorry about bumping; no new info, but...

Lost World will be out in Japan on October 24th, for those with Japanese Wii Us. Like I said elsewhere, at least they won't have to wait a full month like they did with Generations.

So that makes it:
EU: 18 October 2013
NA: October 22nd, 2013
JP: October 24th, 2013

Dang, haha, I wish we'd gotten it around the same time as the EU guys. I'm rather envious.

The game is gorgeous. Played it three times at Comic-Con but it froze the Wii U every time I hit the baddie canister at the end of Windy Hill. Hope that was just the demo build being stubborn.

Makes sense. This is the Colors team isn't it? That'd been done and out for a while before Generations hit.

I feel so bad right now. A Sonic game is one of my most anticipated games of the year. I think I might be sick.

Hopefully it turns out good.
