Sonic Rush - Too Fast, Too Strong

My understanding is that most of the work for SFV, and the ongoing development support, was and is being handled by Capcom. Ono said in an interview that they need to do it that way to meet the deadlines for upcoming features and DLC characters. I wish I had the interview link saved so I could post it (I'd like to read it again myself).

Well, you can check the credits here:

Sonic Rush was amazing, an old school Sonic adventure with a fresh spin, not without its issues (most of the bosses were boring and a step down from the previous games, at least they had better presentation than SRA)

Im not sure what to think about the sequel, however, some things were a bit better while others felt like a step down with uneccessary padding and worse music/presentation.

This game started out as a DS tech demo called Sonic DS....creative name :l. Anyway, it was a 3D on-rails title that was demoed in 2004 to show off Sonic on the DS and it was impressive, Sonic running in 3D. It looks to be using Heroes' Seaside Hill Zone as a base.....

It wasn't much but it was still impressive.

I don't have anything of value to contribute as far as Sonic Rush goes other than I really liked it but that part is a nice trip down memory lane. I don't know if Sonic Rush and that tech demo have any relation but what I do remember is that speed was gained by furiously rubbing the touch screen and eventually Sonic would enter a higher level of speed.

Really liked this and Adventure; still have them in my collection.

I bought Colors DS based on this enjoyment but ended up returning it to GameStop after a few days. After Rush 1+2, it felt weird and awkward.

Colors DS levels were too long IMO. It's the Rush game I disliked the most.

I really wish Colors DS got an early 3DS port for launch. That felt like money left on the table. But yeah Dimps had barely enough time to do Gens 3DS, but surely the people responsible for the art assets and programming could've done a quick port?

Rush and Rush Adventure are two of my favorite games in the entire Sonic Series, that I think were hampered by the dual screen aspect of the DS. I just didn't like looking up and down between the screens because I had to focus on whatever one sonic was on.

But mmmm the tricks and other speed keeping methods are what really made this game shine. Do it right and it looks like the sickest, most baller stage you've ever run.

Yes this game was the tits. And the sequel was even better.

Such a shame that Dimps had such a mastery for what were, if not on the same level as Genesis Sonic, great games in the GBA/DS era that utilize the character well. Before somehow totally blowing it with the 3DS games and Sonic 4.

I liked to imagine the Advance-Rush games running as sort of a parallel timeline to the Dreamcast/GameCube era games, similar to the Game Gear games having their own stories separate from the Genesis series.

Not only too long, but just like... unnecessarily complex for no reason? And by that I mean... levels in video games, including Sonic games, kind of have "landmarks." Like you know where you are in a level because the area looks and feels unique and separate from other parts.

Sonic Colors DS doesn't have that. A lot of its levels feel very cluttered and everywhere looks the same as everywhere else.

I didn't feel like Rush and Rush Adventure particularly had many landmarks, either. In fact, I think Colours DS has more of what you're describing.

See, I don't think so. I think of a level like Sweet Mountain in Colors DS and all I remember is a giant maze where any given section looks identical to every other part of the level.

I dunno, maybe I'm just making up weird bullshit to justify why Colors DS completely failed to be memorable to me much past the first month. Because, I mean, technically Colors DS is competent enough. I can't really cite much about it that's bad or wrong

But I am a Sonic fan, and in general, I tend to go back to Sonic games a lot and replay my favorite levels for faster times or to explore them in greater detail. I have put what is likely hundreds of hours in to Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure, but rarely do I ever feel like touching Sonic Colors DS.

Something about it feels... flat and "off" in a way that's super difficult for me to pinpoint.

Fantastic game. One of the best in the series without question, and easily the best handheld Sonic game. Other than maybe Rush Adventure. One of my favourite DS games too. This was the very first DS game I got.

Some embarrassing early memories of the game though. When I first moved from the top to he bottom screen it took me a good minute to figure out where the hell Sonic went. Seriously. I was just looking at the top screen and I thought Sonic disappearing was a glitch or something. Took a good while before I saw him right there on the second screen.

Hmm, sweet mountain is actually the level I play the least in Colours DS (orange is a boring colour and sweet and savoury food in the same place is just off-putting) so maybe that one's just especially bad. But I can remember loads of wisp-specific areas and landmarks in the other stages. It's actually the only Sonic game where I like the wisps and don't find them intrusive. I've put a lot of time into Rush, Rush Adventure and Colours DS, but maybe I'll try replaying them all back to back to try and see what you mean.

I really enjoyed Rush (and Rush Adventure)

i feel like it kind of married Sonic and NiGHTS a bit, with the emphasis on speed and tricks and score, and since beating my own high score is as much a goal for me as finishing the level.

The soundtrack is amazing. Rush Adventure is a better game but I prefer Rush simply for the soundtrack.

Rush Adventure also has one of my favorite Sonic bosses, the one with the three balls (no not those) attached to chains that you have to hit back into the boss with enough momentum.

I wish they kept up with the Rush spinoff formula. It's not a replacement for classic Sonic, but a new one every couple of years alongside of the "real" Sonic games would be great.

I should pick up Colors DS sometime.

Definitely one of the better post-Genesis releases of the franchise. Even though there are some janky elements (bottomless pits galore, too much 'Sonic is about speed' auto-run and not enough clever platforming, rooms that trap you until you defeat all the enemies), the game still managed to be a lot of fun. That soundtrack is absolutely fantastic and it was nice to have the Sonic 2 special stages back and do a decent job of utilizing the DS gimmickry.

Didn't know the "too black, too strong" was from a Malcolm X speech, the sample was also in Jungle Brothers "I'll House You", which is where I thought it was taken from :P

Was the second Sonic Rush any good? Never played that one.

It was enjoyable and here is a link to my thoughts on that in the retrospective :).

I personally think the second Sonic Rush is overall a better game than the first one. The difficulty curve is a lot smoother and there are fewer levels dragged down by weird/dumb gimmicks like the rolling platform at the end of the pyramid level.

But Rush Adventure also features traversal minigames that don't sit well with everyone, a lot more (totally skippable!) cutscenes, and occasional moments where you have to go back to old levels in order to grind out resources to progress forward. That leaves a sour taste in the mouth of some.

I love both games, and Sonic Rush's higher difficulty makes it more fun to go back to and "master," but as an overall package I like Sonic Rush Adventure WAY more.
