Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Wii/PS3/360; downloadable episodic release - [Update: $15?]

You say that, but it was brought up several times earlier by people who were not Huelen, regarding Sonic's facial expression in the logo...

What's crazier, one guy noticing Sonic's smirk while running, or a hundred complaint posts about green eyes?

Ok so I was just playing Sonic 2 and I noticed something, Sonic got to the ribbon part and I dashed acrossed it, I had both my feet moving in a circle, but when I crossed in Sonic moved in the exact same way he did in the sonic 4 trailer. Seriously go back and try it, you may be shocked at what you discover.

Yes Internet fanboys Sega actually does know Sonic better than you...

I don't know, I think it definitely fits with the tone of the series to the point that it's using the exact same drum beats as the classic Sonic title music. It just isn't very good. It feels like it's missing something. EDIT: Ten-Song put it best - it feels soulless.

I'll never understand the whole "SONIC SHOULD NOT ROCK" movement. Part of what has always been great about the series is that it's been so musically varied. Sonic has always been a series, I feel, where you could juxtapose something with a disco tinge with something funky with balls out effin' rocking with dancey house music with something more orchestral and it all works. It's part of why I think Sonic Adventure 2's soundtrack is so great - it has plenty of lows (any Knuckles song, for example), but it's so incredibly varied and out there and every single character has their own unique sound that it's something really special. If anything, I'd love to see a new Sonic game take all these disparate elements of Sonic music and bring them all together to create the most insanely varied soundtrack of all time. Also because I want Sega to release Naganuma from whatever closet they have him locked in. :(

Yeah, the one aspect I've always enjoyed (at least mostly) to the Sonic series has been the soundtracks for each respective game. There are some bad things in there to consider... such as ANY time vocals are introduced, but for the most part, the game's have each had their own distinct and cool sounds.

It's also the thing I worry about most with Sonic 4. I'm worried too much of the "Hah, Mega Man 9!" mentality has slipped into their heads, and they'll just try to recreate things that sound vaguely old school. If the title jingle is any indication, this is a horrible idea, as it tries to recapture that sound, and fails pretty badly. Instead of being something all to itself and new and cool, it's just a hollow husk that reminds me of something that's far better than what I'm currently presented with.

Another aspect I don't like about it, is it doesn't match the visuals, either. If they're going to make the soundtrack faux-retro, then why doesn't the game look faux-retro as well?

What I'm really trying to say is... get Naganuma to make the damn soundtrack, Sega!

Touché.

Though I think what was sticking out in my head was more along the lines of the main themes for Sonic Heroes and Sonic 2K6.
Great, now I have that Zebrahead nonsense stuck in my head. God, the only thing worse than that was that stupid AKON remix of the Sonic 2 ending theme. What were they thinking? :(

Kind of like All Hail Shadow, though, much as it makes me a bad person.

I don't know that either is crazy. I think everybody is getting antsy because Sega's being a tease. It would all stop and everybody would calm down if we'd actually get a good, long look at the game.

But we're not, because this is exactly what Sega wants. They want to whip the internet in to a frothing, rabid frenzy. It's effecting everyone differently, but the net result is still the same: a million worker drones buzzing in the hive.

If it makes you feel any better, I like the Crush 40 version of "Seven Rings in Hand"

That entire soundtrack needs to go to hell. I cannot think of a single Sonic game whose soundtrack I am more apathetic towards than Secret Rings (well, Shadow, but that's because I don't remember a single thing from it because I've blocked out every memory I have of it). That Dino Jungle song almost drove me to insanity.

Let the Speed Mend It is okay, I guess.

drakesfortune is a major reason as to why I am scared to post in PoliGAF. Fuckwit is another.

A lot of the Secret Rings music is good in an ironic, cheesy way. Let the Speed Mend It and The Palace That Was Found are fun to listen to.

It's just, for me, the guilty pleasure of guilty pleasures regarding Secret Rings OST is this.

I don't know if "buzzing" is a good way to describe my participation in this nonsense. Think "smoldering" would be more apt.

drakesfortune is pretty harmless. Actually, if one thing scares me about him, it's his claim that he's a father of three children being true. Not sure who Fuckwit is, or... was, at least.

Anyone ever notice how SEGA is like the only company that would make original vocal type soundtracks for their games? I can't think of any other company that has done it as many times as SEGA. From Sonic R, Jet Set Radio, Sonic 3's Launch Base Zone, NiGHTS, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure games, etc. I'm sure there are more examples, but I really appreciate that output from them.

That is true, I blocked those fucking starfish out of my mind. :(

Yeah, you know what? I'm totally willing to change my vote to Metropolis.

Metropolis would've been OK hadn't it been for those goddamn exploding starfish, the crabs with extendable claws, those praying mantises (sp?) and a boss that took me 15 years to defeat. FUCK THEM ALL FOR RAPING MY CHILDHOOD.

Those are what made the zone difficult, though. You had to be a real dudebro to survive.

The boss wasn't that hard >__>

pansies, Metropolis was where you were truly tested in Sonic2, everything else is a cake walk compared to it.

I fucking hate the crabs in metro though. Their hitboxes are fucked up and a lot of them have, like, one way for you to kill them without losing rings. it's bananas.

You gotta be able to see the zeroes and the ones to kill those crabs. They're the Agent Smith of Sonic 2.

Well get ready to hate them some more... IN 3D!!

As much as I agree (and I'd erase this entire Green-Eyed Sonic Dark Age from history if I could), there is an exception:

Sonic 3D Blast (Sega Saturn) - Special Stage music. GODLY. Very NiGHTS.

I agree, while I actually had fun with Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Rush I would obliterate both from the face of the Earth easily for a proper Sonic 4 (that its not what we are getting)...
But despite the vocals I really liked this music:

The music from Sonic Rush does not offend my senses. Its the best of a bad era, but I can see effort went into it and I appreciate that.

if there was one good vocal track in Sonic 06, it would have to be Dreams of an Absolution.
but I adore the Lee Brotherton vs Jun Seonue mix

I hated that level.

The first half actually gave credit to the insane theory of hold right to win, and the second half with the rising water made it incredibly frustrating, much harder than later levels.

Heh, I have an eerie love for Sonic R's soundtrack. God, the lyrics in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKeTuZ-zoeA&feature=related are terrible, but I can't help singing along to them. I swear, what the hell kind of city are they living in, though? And... god was that game ever a terrible mess.
I also have a strange love for the final songs on the 3D games, IE Open Your Heart, Live and Learn, and What I'm Made of. Actually, not having bothered with the 3D games after the glitchfest known as Heroes, so I have no idea what the rest of those sound like (wouldn't terribly mind links :)) (Oh, and that I AM THE EGGMAN song is so hilariously bad. God, the 3d soundtracks.)
But yeah, classic Sonic is definitely where it's at, soundtrack wise. Really love Spring Yard Zone http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDd_GlynA6A amongst so many others.

Yeah, same. .....I really don't know why, but the Sonic R soundtrack was just really good. Sonic Adventure 2.....eh, it wasn't that it was too "hard rock", it's more that it didn't seem like it was good hard rock. Except for City Escape. Awesome track.
