Sony accuses Microsoft of 'writing cheques out of insecurity'

I think this year's E3 will be interesting.

After all, both Sony and MS have had plenty of time to develop their response to the Wii. Whether it's a new controller, slew of casual games, decent marketing or more denial.

Well, the PS3 had enough great games to get me to buy one, I think there's some merit in that observation. Surely, no one would be so foolish as to question my gaming tastes?

Aside from that, I do enjoy a good show of corporate mudslinging, so do carry on, gents. MS can afford the cheques, they're gonna keep writing them. Sony can't afford them atm and had a slight miscalculation with exclusive third party support, but their stable is quite solid. Quite solid, indeed.

edit: Also, Doubledex just might be the single worst poster on GAF. I'm not even kidding.

Interesting how none of these people reacted to PSGames list. Carry on soldiers! :)

but some people reacted to it, doesn't matter if they were the same people. all it proves is that there are stupid, crazy, rabid delusional soldiers on both sides. shitty, shitty soldiers fighting a shitty, shitty battle.

ps. your rifle is showing :P

Well, I would be wii60 if it wasn't for games like Resistance, Uncharted, Ratchet etc, never mind the upcoming God of War, Team ICO game etc. Fact is, I love the stuff, but I'm in the minority. Most 'normal' people just want to play Call of Duty or Wii Fit.

So what about that Ears of War everyone here is talking about?
Don't know really but am about to step and grab me a drink before it gets dark. I suggest all three of you sane guys in here do the same.

Are you not 'normal'?

Don't worry Ashley, hide in that dumpster over there, I'll take care of the Ganado's.

WTF! The man has an opinion!

I agree with him, but the game's charm overcomes it all IMO. No interest now I've finished the single-player though, but going for £12.99 on play.com so will get fuck all for it on eBay. What, £12.99 already, for the most hyped game for years? Oh yes.
Lair's still $60 at retail. Does that mean it has better staying power than LBP?

first party games are the one thing Sony can hold over MS

Exactly. Sony spent big money and will reap the rewards for the rest of this gen and well into the next whatever form that will take.

MS can try and use their money hose to remedy the situation but SCE has built a formidable and I would say unequaled portfolio of first and second party studios to genenrate great titles for them over years, not a matter of months.

SCE have built up solid relationships with quality studios such as Insomniac, Suckerpunch and Media Molecule that are based on the time (and money) Sony have given these studios.

But we see smaller studios and new start companies such as Lightbox and Jaffe's East. Sleep. Play. that are also working under the Sony wing. Studios that may be unknown quantities today but could grow to be larger players in the next few years just as Insomniac did.

This isn't based on some fanboy chest beating. This is based on a company that's been willing to invest in talent....in people. Investing in people when it pays (Little Big Planet) and when it doesn't (Lair).

There's a reason that Sony's first party stuff looks so good. It's because Sony give these teams what they need to deliver the goods.

But just remember. Before HALO came out Bungie wasn't exactly the name on everyone's lips. Who knows who the 'next big thing' around the corner will be. But chances are that SCE, in a time when HD gaming seems to be a dirty word, might be the ones to reap the rewards.

Nah. :)

But here: Bungie's last game was in 2007. Turn 10's last game was in 2007. Lionhead's last game was in 2008 (this is good), Rare.. lol (although I love Banjo: N&Bs). This year will probably answer my prayers since we're getting ODST from Bungie, Forza 3 is rumored for this year, but I also want Lionhead's next game this year, as well as Rare's next, big game.

But in 2010? I want the cycle of all these studios releasing big games to repeat. But that's likely not going to happen.
Why wouldnt it happen? Rare is bigger than 2 of Sony first parties put together. Tag teaming each other for 2 developments on the opposite years of release schedules. They just need to get their shit together and stop releasing casual kiddy bullshit no one buys. And the thing about that is the games arnt bad in the least. Its just bullcrap that no one wants to play.

Spawnpoint studios which we have learned is a new MSFT first party. Turn10 could possibly be releasing something this year on the accusation of MSFT's quietness. Lionhead is on the off year with likely just DLC for 2009. Bungie isnt a fp anymore and is likely considred to be the same boat as Epic from now on. So in actuality they dont count anymore. Still 4 fp studios forming a good offensive.

Microsofts "problems" (they are not really problems because every platform has more than enough games for the average gamer and even hardcore types without first party efforts, so the average consumer doesn't really have to care) started when they decided that a good selling game just isn't good enough for them.
I remember an audio interview with Shane Kim from a long time ago, don't know where it was, maybe even Major Nelson's podcast, when he said franchises like Crimson Skies and Mech Assault were games that did good for them and he likes them a lot, but they were aiming for higher sales numbers and they want to try to pursue blockbuster releases and these games just didn't show that potential that last gen, so there probably weren't going to be sequels to those. It seems the only area where they are willing to deviate from that strategy are RPG's and casual games - because those were areas Xbox had lots of room for improvement coming into this generation.

I love Sony more for creative risks they're willing to take, but you got to applaud Microsoft for making really smart choices in some areas. They might not have Flower and the PixelJunk games but they have Peggle and Uno.

wii60: You've really missed a lot if you havent studied the brilliant user created maps that are out there, that and the MGS DLC.

................................slow clap. seriously, that read like a piece on the nightly news. all you needed to add at the end was, "I'm Busty for channel 9 GAF news....Goodnight" and it would have been perfect.

but seriously, i fully expect their first-party efforts to pay off sooner than next-gen. before this generation is out they'll have at least 2 internal games that will show (sales wise) that they were on the right track. especially considering that they'll try to extend the time before PS4 as long as possible i could see a game like GOW was for the PS2 happening. you know, a great selling game that makes you confused as to whether or not you're even ready to upgrade to the competitors new machine.

I hope I'm not late to this, but they're basically saying first party > third party?

Wow. Sony is really the new Nintendo. It's like I'm back in 1999 here.

Gears of War isn't even exclusive.

And neither Mass Effect, Viva Piñata nor Ninja Gaiden II. Regardless of what one might think of the Sony exclusives, they are at the very least the definition of "exclusive."

Can those games you mentioned be played without using Microsoft software? So aren't they Microsoft exclusives? That's like saying Little Big Planet is no longer a Sony exclusive because it's going to be on the PSP.

The list PSGames put up was called "360 Exclusives", but hey, if your reasoning makes you feel better, then thumbs up.
I really don't think referring to the 'de facto' PC OS as a Microsoft platform is relevant in this case

Different game, not a port!

And a PC game is not a 360 exclusive, nuh-uh.

I have played through tons of user-created levels, but not the MGS DLC.

Just feel like I'm wasting my time though, getting to the end of a level doesn't progress you to another.

Seems silly, but I'll proudly admit that I'm a single player campaign whore. I have to aim to get to a 'next level' or to complete the game to give a shit. End of a user-created level doesn't do it for me. All goes back to being a child and getting to the 'next screen' on Monty on the Run :p

Not yet.

And I want my avatar back. Can everyone start a Facebook campaign? After all, I had the best avatar on NeoGAF.

Consoles wars aside, I think the real issue is that the developer/publisher is limiting their audience when they make these deals. Sure the amount of money they receive upfront may replace the sales lost from other consoles/PC, but in the end you should want your game to reach as many gamers as possible. I buy games from developers that I have a good history with, building that relationship should matter to them.

It was lame when exclusives were paid for two generations ago, it was lame last generation and it's still lame now.

What about? The topic at hand?

Yeah, see, a huge first party effort is in effect doubling down on your console's success. If it works then you have a lot of software profits to add to whatever other money you've made and you've built up franchises that will help in the next generation. But if it doesn't, then you are stuck with paying a huge number of people making games for a system that doesn't have the install base to really support what they produce.

It might be different for Nintendo but neither MS or Sony have a business model that can work without spectacular sales.

Was it that Steve Coogan one?

Also, what's up with your current avatar? explanation please.

Here's a better representation. From Gamerankings.com:

Taking the top 5 highest ranked first party titles from the two current gen consoles:
LittleBigPlanet 94.35
Killzone 2 90.81
Uncharted 89.62
MLB 09 The Show 89.30
Ratchet and Clank Future 88.82

Average: 90.58

Halo 3 93.33
Forza 2 89.74
PGR3 88.66
Fable 2 88.38
Viva Pinata 85.47

Average: 89.91

Now let's take the all-time highest ranking from this generation and last:

LittleBigPlanet 94.35
Gran Turismo 3 94.30
God of War 93.44
God of War 2 92.61
Shadow of the Colossus 91.68
Avg: 93.28

Halo 95.44
Halo 2 94.55
Halo 3 93.33
PGR 2 92.97
Forza 2 89.74
Avg: 93.20

Okay, so fairly close. However, notice that MS' is nothing but racers and shooters, while four different genres are represented in Sony's top 5. Spread that to the Top 10 and the stratification gets far worse.

What about sales? Here is, measured in millions, the estimated sales from ******** for the most recent title in each portfolio's most popular franchises, versus the highest-selling titles between this generation and last.

Gran Turismo 9.7/ 14.9
God of War 2.45 /3.2
Ratchet and Clank 1.46 / 2.9
SOCOM 1.5/ 3.4
Resistance 3.6 / 3.6
18.71 / 28 million

Halo 9.5
Fable 2.7
Forza 4
Viva Pinata 1.5
PGR 1.67/ 2.14

19.87 / 20 million
Nice job bringing in the Ps2 era... also you missed several games on Microsoft's side. If LBP/Resistance/Ratchet and Clank count then so do Gears 1&2 and Mass Effect. That should put MS a pretty solid couple % up on Sony. I'm not trying to say Sony's first/2nd party efforts suck but saying Sonys 1st party is god while MS's is nonexistent is insane.

It was up there with the best.. I had no idea who that guy was but the avatar reminded me of pac-man for some reason :lol

What's the difference between buying studios so they become first party and buying exclusive content/games? It's just different strategies, being in last place has driven Sony to being entirely desperate for attention.
