Sony and Immersion Litigation Over - Enter Into Business Agreement

i dont own a single sony product...

Actually, you probably do, you just don't know it. There are probably Sony-manufactured components in one thing or another that you own, even if it isn't a branded-Sony product.

Digital cameras would be a good example of this. Sony makes sensors for a number of other companies. Laptop batteries(lol) are another example.

As a PS3 owner, I can't see how this can be interepreted as anything but good news. As a fan of rumble, I will definitely be interested in the new controller. What this announcement and the HOME "announcement" have done has made the future playing field between Sony and MS even more balanced and to some degree, the balance could tilt towards Sony as far as multiplatform games. With rumble and a more robust online experience in place, the multiplatform games will now be differentiated in other ways, if at all. It could come down to whether or not the online service is free, or if the game runs better at higher resolutions.

You read my mind.

While it may be the supposed 'next gen' rumble, it might also just be Immersion's variation of rumble for use with SixAxis.
They would be crazy not to use that next gen rumble tech, as it was already demonstrated in practical use last year. The only obstacle I could see if the mechanism used for it is just impractically heavy or power consuming.

With the upcoming firmware updates, PS-Home speculation, and rumble making a comeback on PS3... did I make a mistake purchasing a 360 so soon.. ?!

F*CK YES!!!! that's exactly what happened. quick, sell it before you have fun with it!

in other news, Sony did the right thing and should be applauded. if you bought a non-rumble controller equipped console then i'm sorry that happened to you but as a business move it's good for Sony to be doing this now instead of later. you might have to sting a few of the early adopters but a lot of people wanted rumble (including Sony) so it's better to slide it in there when there's a few million consoles out there rather than when there's 20+ million out there. sure it could have happened before the launch but.....shit happens i guess. the big news is that these corporations are listening to gamers! with the internet being so huge right now even non-hardcore gamers are getting a little gaming news online and the big 3 hears the complaints of gamers basicly overnight. it was happening last gen too but i think the scale is a bit larger now.

I'm not applauding them for the simple fact that this should've happened before launch. Plus they basically lied on record as far as the reason why rumble was not incorporated. Couple that w/ having to buy additional controllers...

Lesser of two evils I guess, as I'd prefer getting rumble in some form, than to have to do w/ out it for the duration of the PS3 life cycle.

What about the whole "You've already paid $500-600 for the console, now buy this new controller" thing? I thought it was dirty when Sony did this with the PSOne analog and when Microsoft did this with "the duke" and the controller S. I'm all for added functionality, but for the love of god, get your crap together at launch. It hasn't been 6 months yet and they're pulling this.

Also, peripherals that aren't included at launch are typically doomed because nobody wants to cater to a splintered market. This case may be different because of the continued use of rumble in other systems, but it's still a stupid stunt.

Final Note: A current Sixaxis without rumble costs around $50. That's the price of a game. Personally, after dropping $500-600, I would want to avoid spending needless amounts of money on crap that should have been in the initial package. They're crapping on early adopters, is all.

No. Sony was just a bit tardy in bringing these features to us, the consumers. Better late than never though, right?

It seems it didn't affect the PS1 success and i doubt the Xbox would have performed better with the controller S at launch. All in all, buying a new controller = big deal.
But you have the right to cry if you want. Don't be an early adopter next time. (if you are one)

Sell the new controller with a lightweight game, like Nintendo did with Wii play, and maybe it will help lower the amount of complaints from early adopters... maybe :D

EDIT: Better idea, trade in your Emotion Engine for rumble.

Holy shit, a controller with tilt AND rumble! How'd they fit that, i thought they said it was impossible!!!

I'm completely an idiot on this matter, but did Immersion sue Nintendo too? They had rumble on N64 and GC.
Nintendo has always used a different method. Sony and MS used a dual motor system.

I'm not all that interested in this, though. If they could do it without adding much weight to the controller, perhaps I'd be fine with it, but I much prefer having an ultra light controller to a controller with rumble.

I see a number of people have moved on to complaining about how much the price will be inflated, much like I predicted yesterday.

If sony is going to release a new controller, it shouldn't just be SIXAXIS with rumble. They should bring on the next gen force feed. Take things a step further than what MS and Ninty already have.

Yeah, I have to agree with this. I really like the super light controller. I don't even feel it when I'm playing - awesome.

Rumble will also drain the batteries faster, which means more frequent charging, which means battery death will come faster. When that happens, the controller has to be chucked and a new one bought - not good.

Well didn't Immersion trumpet a bit back that they'd added some new wrinkles to rumble? Maybe that tech'll end up in a PS3 controller.

They previewed their next generation rumble tech some time ago, but nobody picked it up. Hopefully Sony will now.

indeed... if they put the new tech in their controllers then this whole mess may have been worth it as a result. fingers crossed. they save a bit of face that way as well, because they wouldn't be using the implementation of rumble that they claimed didn't work in a motion sensing controller.

I personally experienced Immersion's new rumbling technology yesterday, and I have to say that it's a major, major step in the right direction.

Not only are the rumbles stronger, they feel more detailed and crisp. A nearby explosion sends powerful shockwaves rippling through your hands; wielding a lightsaber produces a pleasant "humming" sensation; and machinegun fire feels downright violent. It's ten times better than the rumbling on the PS2 or Xbox 360.

In short, this is excellent tech. Microsoft and Sony need to sign on ASAP.

He sounds excited.

Alright I know this will sound dumb as hell, but what if this was Sony's plan all along. Maybe they have been working with Immersion with the new rumble tech and just couldn't get it in the controller in time. *shurgs*

They need to slap a speaker on the bitch while they're at it. That was a good decision on Nintendo's part.

Is that possible or will patents or some other legal hurdle prevent this?

That wasn't a bad idea, but Nintendo did a terrible job with it. The Wii-mote speaker is incredibly bad sounding. On each Wii I've used, I've also found that it often cuts out/acts strange during use.

Its usage in Wario Ware was nifty, but most games really don't benefit due to the poor sound.

I hope they make the "handles" a tad bit longer cos when I have to pull those R2/L2 triggers (while having both thumbs on the sticks) the controller kinda slides out of my hands.

enlighten me... not sure what you're getting at.
Just that I've said the same a few times throughout this saga. Not that many people cared for it at those times, so we'll see how it pans out this time.

Bring back the batarang but with small adjustments like triggers on the back + obvious next gen rumble and a good speaker. Color should be black black black.

They better be talking to someone about a more robust battery then. The battery life is good now. If they started adding all this stuff and use the same one, I'll have to charge my controller every day.

Meh.. As long as I get force feedback in the steering wheel Im good.

If rumble in SS2 works like in DS2 I will switch it off. Battery life > rumble IMO.

I'm sure they still work.

I still haven't bought a second PS3 controller. You can chalk that up to online multiplayer. Cannot wait to see what the new and improved PS3 controller will be like. Please patch Resistance with rumble as well. :) !!!!!

From the Gamepro article

Immersion's new force-feedback technology is lighter and smaller,

It also uses one motor rather than two, so you can take away that power consuming thing too ;)
