Sony and Immersion Litigation Over - Enter Into Business Agreement

It's ****ing $40, dude. We've already spent well over $700 for the system at this point. Another $40 isn't going to cause mass defections.

I feel sad for people who went out and bought PS3 early. Now they have to spend even MORE money for a feature that should have come in the first place.

I can't believe how hyped some people are getting over this. Removing features, and then adding them on later for fanfare is going to become an industry standard, I promise it.

hah!

If you haven't realized yet, the PS3 isn't for poor people. In the words of Drinky "Dirty poors need not apply"

i swear... the hate is soo strong sometimes

come now, it's all in the timing - i'd be interested in hearing why this has settled now (after immersions "We can sort this!" statements prior to launch) rather than before the launch so that a standard feature could be included.

It could well be about wrangling new deals, new rates, etc etc... it could be one of the companies being pigheaded... but hey - great news that its back in - i'll be buying one for sure but somewhat regretting buying 3 extra controllers right now! So you can see why the "sony faithful" might feel a bit pissed off.

But anyways, I don't think any one is upset that rumble has been reincluded, just that this could/should have been handled better and prior to the launch.

Wow...This day is full of suprises.

I leave for work and rumble returns, PSN Live and the BANNED site that told me what a T-Back means...gets hounded then back in Sony's good graces?

Ok, i get it, there were 36,000 copies away from beating the DS in Japan, but damn... they have a long way to go...

(Oh and MS has no choice or deal with both Ninty and Sony if they try any crap with Immersion)

Personally I think its cool for people who were complaining for it, but honestly unless theres like some swap old for new service (very doubtful), or one of my controllers dies or breaks, I doubt I'll find the energy to buy new controllers just for rumble. Maybe if it contained some of that advanced rumble immersion was talking about last year, that is... if it really is advanced. Otherwise I can't see myself doing it. I'd rather spend the money on more games.

... what?

also peoples, it's worth waiting to see what is happening as people have said...

the first rumble controller might be a year away - and it might be actual next gen rumble (whatever that maybe)

that would certainly make this much more acceptable.

This is good news. I sure hope they get the rumble controllers out there soon, as i'd like to buy one by year's end.

I'll buy one for MGS4, but if you come over you are just gonna have to deal with the old rumbless sixaxis sucker!

I am not that worried (I have only bought 1 extra controller so far though) for the PS1 I had the original digital pad, the 1st gen dual analog with the concave sticks and no rumble, then finnaly the dual shock!

updated PS3 controller without BT lag, with better (replacable rechargable) battery life, with next gen rumble and a next gen form factor would be awesome.

Something inbewtween the logitech PS2 second gen controller and E32005 prototype remote would be nice.

concave analog stick tops would be awesome too.

CMON SONY! YOU CAN DOO EET!

WHO CARES?!?! I brought the PS3 on day one. I'll spend $100-$120 on two controllers and I'm still happy.

More realistically, Sony will just include standard dual shock rumble in the SIXAXIS and price it a few dollars more. I'm expecting them to release it sometime during the Summer. Would be nice to get next gen rumble (whatever that is).

Here's some info on Immersion's Touchsense next gen rumble.

"Next gen rumble":

With the new technology, vibrations can be crisper, shorter in duration, more closely spaced, more in sync with onscreen events, simultaneous, and both stronger and more subtle to supply a new level of realism. Shorter, crisper effects allow the feel of machine gun fire to be more staccato-like and also more closely synchronized with the sounds and appearance of realistic gun fire. New levels of strength and variation allow gamers to feel the accelerating surge of powering up a light saber, followed by the transition to a subtle hum, then the jolt of clashing with their opponent's light saber. A more subtle capability allows the springy sensation of hitting a tennis ball or the fast, crisp connective feel of catching a long pass, supplying a far more immersive experience. Multiple, simultaneous game effects can be separately rendered to increase engagement and excitement. For example, distinctly different vehicle vibrations caused by driving over gravel, rocks, and mud could be felt along with the sharp pop of shifting gears or the force of acceleration or deceleration.

Well, those 5 million current PS3 owners out there must be pissed....:D Yes, all 5...err...4 million of them.

Anyways, I'm excited. This has boosted my interest in the PS3. I hope the next R&C uses rumble. That would be stellar!

I uh...actually think you mean 2 million. But I'm sure it'll hit 3 as soon as it launches in Europe.

the one good thing that sony must be applauded for is giving their army of fans who've already said in their numbers that they don't want/use rumble the option - so that those who miss it can pay to get it back and those who don't won't have to.

They should also redesign the triggers. The Dualshock had awesome shoulder buttons but the PS3's shoulder buttons are a mess. Not only is it harder on the Sixaxis to switch between the top and bottom shoulder buttons, the triggers also suck. Apparently, many PS3 developers also think that the Sixaxis's triggers suck as many racing games don't even use them for throttle/brake and Resistance doesn't use them for firing. Luckily, I haven't bought another PS3 controller. I wonder if I didn't buy an extra controller because I didn't have many multiplayer PS3 games or if I subconsciously know that there would be a controller revision.

What do you mean about the button lag though? I have to give credit to the Sixaxis for working really well in VF5.

Actually, I'm expecting it will not be the same as last gens rumble.

I was being sarcastic....

Sorry, the PSN Home thread completely ran the batteries dry on my sarcasm detector. Still waiting for them to charge up again. I knew I should've bought the extra set, but damnit, these ones were on sale.

It's a shame that sony decided to do this months after launch but the new is good for future ps3 games and force feedback in racing games.

My opinion of rumble is the same. It's nice to have, but not a big deal one way or the other.

And for those wondering why Sony didn't settle last year, or why they poo pooed rumble and will now have to backpeddle, it was probably to negotiate better terms with Immersion. By launching without rumble, they showed they were willing to do without it, and probably got a more favorable settlement.

What? :lol

Sony alone decides when litigation ends now?

Good to see Sony back on the path of common sense. I've asked before that if they think rumble is so last-gen (you know, like every PS2 game ever since the PS3 launch and before), why not just have the rumble OFF by default and let the user decide to turn it on? Turning it off works the same way as taking the whole thing out, except without the retarded method of taking the whole thing out *gasp*.

But we all know that everything that could be said about the situation has been said, so hey. At the very least now I know to wait for the more complete controller to come out before purchasing. And it WILL come out or so help me god I will be banned for a week.

Yeah that's right, I just put IT on the line...

Also, I am detecting large quantities of PR backpeddling in this thread, and Sony's PR staff hasn't said anything beyond the initial news yet. All eyez on Phil.

so how is this rumble different from nintendos ans xbox? How did sony get sued but not the others, is the technology relatively different?

Nintendo's is sufficiently different to not be infringing, and Microsoft settled with Immersion years ago and liscenced their technology (as part of the deal they bought part of Immersion and sold it soon after, creating the 'Sony will be paying MS if they settle with Immersion' rumor).

Nintendo has their own rumble tech, Microsoft DID get sued but settled with Immersion, then somehow came out smelling like roses with perpetual low cost implementations.

EDIT - beaten by birds.

From the description, it sound more refined if anything. Maybe something new? Will probably keep it under wraps until its unvieled (assuming Sony even is going to go through with this).

MS was sued.

So they bought out immersion (at least part of them) ... forced a sweetheart license deal ... then sold them :lol

So is this rumble tech similar to what is currently in the 360, or is it the newer rumble tech that they demo'd at E3.

Immersion has the technology. No products has been announced yet.

Immersion obviously felt it was in their best interests to be in the good graces of the $12.5+ billion per year videogame industry's leader. They must feel relieved to have finally put this issue to bed.
