SONY ANNOUNCED NEW PSP!!! (more changes than you thought)

To the guys who will use the TV-out, where will you use it? I just can't imagine it looking any good on a decent-sized flat-screen, and it won't work in hotel rooms where I'd need it most because of the component/prog scan requirement. Or will you use it on your PC monitors or something?

Not improved enough for me to bother double dipping. I'll stick with my old PSP model. :)

I think loading times is enough of a reason to get PSP 1.1

The TV out and the slimmer design is just a bonus.

Component out? Sold.

Ghosting on the PSP sucks, but if I can hook it up to my CRT via component and play Dracula X on my TV... sold.

Ideally it wouldn't BREAK existing games, in those cases, it'd just be dead, or maybe echo input as if it were the buttons or the left stick itself?

Games would have to be designed for 1 stick and 2 stick options, yes, but it would be nice to HAVE the option there when possible.

I was holding off for a redesigned PSP, but... I'm pretty underwhelmed. I know rumors get carried away, but I guess I got too excited with what had been heard, which had a lot of truth to it, but not to the degree we saw. There IS internal memory for caching games, but it's only 64 MB, not 8 GB. The battery life is better, but we're not clear by just how much yet. It's lighter, but the overall shape is still the same, and some inherent problems remain. And the "wishlists" generally went unanswered. It's better, but it's hard not to want something more.

I was under the impression that the "caching" option was to the STICK, not to the internal memory. That 64 megs is likely there for something else entirely.

I bought a PSP around christmas, the shitty 250$ entertainment bundle, which got stolen a few months later back at school. I've been wanting a new one ever since and this pretty much justifies it for me, I'm guessing this will be a holiday release? I'll be picking up the silver one since I always wanted daxter anyhow.

Things of note:

-Face buttons are visibly raised and easier to hit.
-Memory Card slot has changed somewhat.
-Wifi switch is now on top, presumably the wifi unit is behind the screen now. Helpful since the old unit would heat up your hands after heavy use!
-Battery is now 1200maH, a 1000 less than the older unit. Sony are promising better battery life?
-PSP can now accept power charge directly through the USB port.
-Battery cover features a new mechanism to open it.
-Infrared port removed.
-Hold switch is on the left side, seperated from the power switch

I saw that in another picture too.

Unless they SIGNIFICANTLY improved power consumption (which I doubt they did) that's a whole 600mAH than the current standard one.

WTF? What's stopping them from putting better cells in their freaking batteries? Some NiMH AA batteries are already sporting 2500+mAH, so...

The memory is what allows the less loading and longer battery life, it's not exactly hard to figure out.

I MUST KNOW how faster UMD loading is, and if the "copy UMD data" thing is going to be applicable to the PSPhat.

I wanted clamshell :(

Less umd spinning = both better battery life and faster loads.

It's obvious this thread and a few others have folks who are still around due to the softer modding stance announced just before E3... because the hate is completely f'n retarded in almost every E3 announced related thread that I've seen, it's really ridiculous and makes reading these threads pretty jarring.

Personally I don't have a need for this update, but what the hell... lighter, slimmer, loads faster?

I'm there.

When they say longer battery life I doubt its 1+ hours on top of the default time, the whole memory storing some UMD media for easier loading probably saves the battery a little and gives a little longer life compared to the regular psp.

It's not fair to just compare mAh ratings; they reflect the total energy capacity, but not the amount of power they can deliver at any one moment.

i'm still hoping for stealth updates to the screen and the d-pad...but actually i think i'll buy one just to use the tv-out and dedicate my old psp to homebrew

Not improving the analog nipple is a gotdamn insult. It offers current PSP owners zero incentive to upgrade.

WTF Sony.

a better question is where is the cable going to come from? looking at those pictures from engadget, there doesn't seem to be a conspicuous 'video out" port.

though I could be blind.

My phone does video-out over composite via its 3.5mm headphone jack, when I plug the AV cable in it asks what I've plugged in. The PSP might be the same although a 3.5mm jack to component + stereo RCA sounds a bit full on.

Meh.

I said meh.

A mediocre update to a system with no games.

Man, I was getting worried for a minute there. Too much positivity going on this thread! It needed some dumb troll-like comments!

I suppose you'd have to be one of those PSP owners who has trouble with the analog numb (in the types of games you play) to be concerned about this.

I've long heard about this analog nub problem and the ghosting issue, but I've never had either issue myself. It's probably my old eyes and old man reaction times causing me to not notice these problems.

The silver is as good as mine. I may consider getting the white if it's dramatic different from the Ceramic white of Japan which I already have.

I have purchased and sold back the PSP twice already, and I am currently borrowing a friends', but I will definitely be picking up this model. It addresses a lot of my complaints about the original and looks really sleek. Combine that with the steady stream of awesome games that will be coming out and the deal is sealed.

Doesn't it seem kind of stupid for them to announce this model 2 months or more in advance, though? Sales of the normal PSP will certainly slow down after this announcement. When is the Japanese release date?

Just noticed that the box seems to be like the GBmicro boxes (the original ones)...
You can see the unit inside thorugh the plastic in the front...

I was just thinking the same thing.

rondo.png

But Rondo is like 256x224 resolution. You can play it at that, or (apparently badly) scale it up to the PSP's 480x272. And then the TV is like 640x480 (accessible with UMD movies, but not PSP games).

It'd be nice if IGA could hook up a last minute fix and output an evenly doubled 512x448 for anyone with a PS PeePee. But it's probably much too late for that, and probably beyond IGA's ability.

I think the best to hope for is that you can play Rondo in it's original rez, and zoom it up to double size using your TV's options, if it's capable of doing that (mine isn't, nor is it pro-scan, but it does have component inputs). Or just play it in it's original rez, and be happy that using half (1/4) of your TV is bigger/better than using the PSP's screen.

I know change it yourself is never a solution anyone wants to hear, but you can find all kinds of replacement nubs/sticks for the PSP. I use the original, as I don't seem to have any issues.

i plan to use it on my car tv. I just need a bigger MS to hold my movies.

Reply to me please!

So when they mentioned in the conference that the PSP would be able to access your PS3's HDD & media over the Internet from anywhere, they didn't tie the statement directly to the redesign. To me it sounded like a firmware update.

Getting a PS3 pretty soon... have an old 1.5 PSP. I really hope this feature is coming via a firmware update, because being able to get at my H.264 library at home while on business trips would be glorious.

Anyone have any info on whether old PSPs will have the functionality?

It's firmware based.
You can already do that.
movies, picutres, music. parts of a game too i believe (Mainichi Isshao).

There's a way to access media in ur PC through PS3 with ur PSP too.

Is it trivially easy to set up?

I only keep Macs running, so I wonder how the PC<->PS3 tunnel works.

Faster loading times would be appealing but I load my psp collection via ISO on the memory stick so it has little to no loading times to begin with :p

The new UMD slot is so cool. There are no "rails" guiding the disc inside. You just toss it in and close the lid.

Max ext.video output res supported is 640x480 for movies. 480(?)x272 for games.
Gotta double check the LCD quality tomorrow. Been busy playing LBP :P

back to the hotel now.

edit: forgot to add I met Dylan Jobe. Had a good chat about the improvements in warhawk. played the latest version with him. LOTS of improvements both gameplay and graphics wise. Hi Dylan :)
