Sony Exec: "Team ICO working on 'the sequel' " - OPM UK

Considering how tenuously connected the two originals are, I wouldn't be surprised if by "the sequel" they meant "new game in same world with a reference to the other games at some point". Not an actual continuation of something.

SotC sold pretty darn well from what I recall.

I'd rather have a new game than a sequel. Both Ico and SotC were pretty conclusive.

Same here. I just hope it's not 2 years we have to wait before it's released.

I want to see a mix of Ico, SotC, and even another level of it.

basically smaller scale stuff and fighting from Ico, boss battle types from SotC, and whatever else they think of.

and maybe they can get it running at a good frame rate this time, SotC was pretty bad at times.

I'd much rather have the 'unrelated game with similar art style in same world' than an actual sequel to either Ico or SotC. Give me something new and exciting, a sequel would be a serious disappointment.

I bet four SPE's will be dedicated to bloom. Then one dedicated for rendering brown, then another for rendering gray.

Then for the framerate, they'll dedicate hey wait a second.
BAN HIM
I'm being really honest when I say this...I really didn't even notice the slowdown, I think I may have seen it as a visuall effect when I first played through it. I was so engulfed into the beauty and music of the game, and sheer fun of taking the bosses down that it never crossed my mind.

SotC and ICO spoilers:

It is almost certain that it will be a prequel to SotC. The whole story closed with ICO's ending. It's obvious from SotC that they were hinting at more and didn't answer these new questions. For example, when Dormin speaks you can hear a female voice on top of the male voice, but as the game progresses you hear the female voice less and less. In ICO Yorda is a female. Well in SotC everytime you kill a colossis light escapes from the idols. So we can presume that Dormin was trapped by the power of light (him being shadows) and that "light" force is female. In ICO you use some funky light sword to defeat the Shadow Queen and free Light Girl Yorda.

So my guess is the timeline will go: PS3Game - SotC - ICO.

They better just mean that in the sense of ico > sotc > new hotness. If it turns out to be ico or sotc 2 I will fucking ragepost and murderrape someone.

As far as team ICO working on a game in the same world, duh!

are you some kind of insider? cause you claimed that this was incorrect and i'd like to know how YOU know that this information is wrong.

It is unfortunate, but I am unable to disclose "how I know" I was simply asking a question, not condemning the thread.

Well, it could be something set in between the two games as well. I agree though, ICO pretty much ends it as far as we know. SotC pretty much explains that the Queen's shadow power (she used both light and dark IIRC) is taken from the remains of Dormin via the horn children or something like that, but we still don't know where she came from exactly or what her deal is.

-------

Why don't we talk about gameplay? Both of the Team ICO games have been about taking a very few game mechanics (dungeon/escort mission, then overworld/boss battle) and focusing on them very tightly to the exclusion of just about all else. So, what else is left for them to experiment with? Combat and item-based puzzles sounds like it'd be pretty generic.

Personally, I'd love to see the next game be about a giant abandoned GTA-esque stone city, vast in the same sense that the buildings in the previous games or the SotC world map were. Make it open and explorable, give us puzzles to make transportation faster and open up new areas of the city, and hopefully have a companion as memorable as Yorda and Agro.

I actually like hearing that they're making a sequel. This only means their next game won't be a complete deviation from their previous ones in terms of style. I would love to see either Ico's or SotC's art direction done on the current gen systems.

I hope it's ICO 2. Something about ICO was just so beautiful... I just prefered it over SotC. As much as I wanted to, I just couldn't get into the moving levels thing. It frustrated me more than anything, but not in a challenging way. More just in a trial and error way as it was hard to plan ahead.

Anyway, ICO was just so incredible and a next-gen sequel to that would be incredible.

this thread is not complete without any of Crushed's many stupid pics....

i gotta love the ones you made from Batman Begins

I just don't know how to respond to this news, so I'll just post this and call it a night.

Thank you for having great taste.

SotC is the most profound action platformer I believe has ever been made, but ICO has something more. That said, SotC was in a hollywood movie. They are working on SotC 2.

I disagree, the ending to Ico is pretty damn open-ended and ambiguous. There could be plenty of story to tell there.

Also, I think the lack of color in both games was a deliberate and successful choice. No vibrancy really drove home the feeling of solace and isolation in both games, which was an integral part of the atmosphere. It also served to make those rare moments of bright color (the grass courtyard/garden in the Ico castle comes to mind) stand out all the more.

Microsoft must have been desperate for a Bungie replacement.

Wonder how they'll handle Halo 4.

Team ICO will have it running at 640X360.

Not sure if this means anything, but:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85861&highlight=fumito

Shadow OF the Colossus developers speaks about next project 13.02.06 - The Famitsu spoke the Colossus with the developers of Shadow OF about its next project. Fumito Ueda says that it will not be directly a successor to Shadow OF the Colossus. Rather it would like to try something new out, because that was its appointment. The work on the new project did not begin yet, however Ueda has already a few plans and drafts.

I'm tempted to bring up my ICO = AntAttack prequel conspiracies again :D, so this would be Fueda AntAttack remake (seriously, look at the damn box arts, it's like, right there... ahem...)

Ok on more serious note, does anyone wonder if they might bring the SOTC/ICO-ish world setting online...?

If true, it doesn't matter if its a sequel to either games, I'll buy it and love it. I hope its SotC2 though, just because that with some co-op would be the bomb.

Shadow of the Colossus

Actual non-boss adventure-based combat

PS3 graphical capabilities

Sony the winner of the past, present, future, and all dimensions. You CANNOT GET MORE WIN THAN THAT.

Aren't Shadow of the Colossus and ICO related, if not by some crazy roundabout way? I can see it being a sequel to both.

How the hell do you go from
one of the other execs present blurted out. "I'm pretty sure they're doing the sequel."
to
Sony Exec: "Team ICO working on 'the sequel' "
and not feel utter shame burning inside?
