And then you'd buy games on Steam right? Strong hypocrisy. This is the only thing that would make me go Wii U/PC only next gen.
Screw this anti-consumer BS.

Something like this is totally deal breaking for me.
What? Is it selfish to buy something for my personal enjoyment? Since when?
And maybe you didn't know, but there are several threads on GAF where we gift and receive free stuff, usually Steam games, but also console games and related merchandise. How's that for our selfish nature?

You talk like used games are the same as grabbing roms or ISOs! Not to mention we had Funcoland back in the 90s and I regularly saw used games at Kmart, so it's not as if this option hasn't been around for a long, long time.@topic: Banning used games will come sooner or later. It's something you cannot change and it's something one has to understand. If I had to easy access to used games when I was little like I have now I would have been drowning in videogames back then and wouldn't have bought a single one new.
We already had these sales on consoles.... Of course not a Steam-level yet but many things can happen once used games sales are a thing of the past.Give me a break.
I'll buy during Steam sales, the likes of which we NEVER see on consoles.
If consoles start having those sales, I'm in. I give the chance of that happening about 2%, though.
ID-tagged gamers own ID-tagged consoles, play ID-tagged games.
Gaming has changed.

cd's aren't exactly here to stay and do people really buy/sell used movies?

The thing is that the picture of the industry has changed radically this generation. Of course you were able to get some cheap used games before as well but certainly not to a level like today. It's riddiculusly easy to get used games on the internet and people sell games all over the place. Also, consider how much you REALLY save at GameStop buying used: something like $5. If you were really being smart about hunting down a bargain you'd be keeping an eye on ads, looking online, and just waiting for that right moment where a game's $10 or even $20 off rather than just $5. Maybe your angle is that you'd just stockpile on older, really cheap games, but either you were specifically looking for those games or just wanted cheap entertainment, and if it's the former then you'd be saying this is an effort by the industry to, at best, keep monetizing those older games, and at worst push you to ONLY check out the newest and hottest. I can't blame them entirely for the former, but given how bad they can be at keeping some stuff available I'd rather keep my options open, and the latter is utterly abhorrent.
I don't buy used, so whatever. If it helps developers I am for it actually. Otherwise I don't see how 60% of devs are going to survive next gen,.
Seriously, why is GAF in uproar over something that will not happen? Jack Tretton said he was against it and I'll take words of SCEA president over this patent.
Usage of this patent is optional, not mandatory and Sony would be insane to go with this tech in PS4. Common sense says that this will never happen so try using it before going into panic mode.

Its fun how huge the defense force here is and how huge the outcry over play limits for WiiU demos was.
Yeah, I'm a bit puzzled by that myself. Many in that thread were saying it was 'anti-consumer' to limit demos.
Well it is (to an extent), I guess more people like to shit on Nintendo than on Sony, heh.
Demos are meant to be limited, hence "demonstration". It's not anti consumer at all, they don't even need to offer you a demo.
Whine all you like, but the first console to crack this will enjoy the most publisher support.
Used sales are far worse for the bottom line of the publishers than piracy ever was.
Other than Steam, give me an example in this industry where this has happened recently.
I mean, the lowest we've seen retail prices was microsoft store on Black Friday, and that was like the deal of the century. It never happens like that during the year.
Yea, pretty much simple as that.If a system prevents me from selling or buying used games, I will not buy that system.
people actually agreeing with this? What the fuck?

.
holy shit, people don't actually buy used games and have already been using a similar system in other platforms? what the fuck?
So this means I can't borrow games from friends? What about renting from Gamefly?
Forget that. I'll go WIIU/PC only then, and yes I know I can't resell Steam content, but I'd rather live off of Steam sales then wait for publishers to throw console gamers a bone.
As a PC gamer first and foremost, used games aren't really something I ever think about. I don't resell games and I don't buy them used. So this wouldn't affect me.
Still, I don't think it would really work to Sony's advantage if they use such a system. If both Sony and MS use it though...
PC
But games are cheaper on PC already.
The other question I have is - what happens twenty years from now? You can buy second-hand Atari 2600 games today, which is great since they're not sold new any more. So, when the games from the coming generation are well out of print and the servers to check your "ownership status" are long shut down - are these completely useless pieces of plastic? That would be rather sad.
Which one?
It's a promotional item, it makes no sense to limit them.
It's like limiting the number of times you can see a trailer to a film.
Let's put it that way :
When I bought the last season of Dr House, I got the 1rst episode of a new show they were trying to push.
It would make no sense to limit the number of views of that episode.

how is steam not the same thing? you buy a game that gets tied to your account and can never be traded. it just sits there, whether you liked or not, regardless of how much you paid for it.
You described yur situation but somehow we missed your explanation why it doesn´t make sense.
