Only if the game is free for the user. In a payed game? No way.Acceptable...
But not in the middle of gameplay.
using the racing game example, I'm happy to watch an ad AFTER the race, or if I go into the pits. not DURING it!

Unless its offered in a free to play knack version I wouldn't mind, that's when it's acceptable
The PS4 has SPUs?
Just tweeted @yosp about this being unacceptable in any form.
[EDIT] wtf at this necro-bump
wow an entire chip dedicated to advertising. crazy/sad times we live in.
I second this, as mentioned before companies patent shit all the time! So this thread is pointless and we already have the PS4 on the market for 2 years now, no such thing is present and Sony will commit suicide if they do it!
Horrible idea , why would I want to watch an ad in the middle of my game, I've already got limited time to play these days.
I imagine it'd be like castlevania : Simons quest where it pops up in a square and plays
I know it's a patent X not true but who knows man, anything can happen.

It's not for the person playing the game it's for the people watching you play the games.
Live From PlayStation is interactive & already has ads. it's already happening.
When I saw posts referencing the Vita, it clued me in that this is an old threadI miss 2012. Back then I thought Sony were serious about supporting the Vita. Good times.
Would it qualify as a gamer themed avatar now?
Didn't Sony basically make the same patent about 5 years or so ago? I honestly can't see it coming to much personally.
Summer Lesson with Pepsi ads. Sounds legit.
I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt, and assume they're patenting it so no one else has it...for the future.
However, if this became a reality, you can guarantee I'm dumping my PS4 instantly.
You're in the middle of playing Dark Souls 3 and encountering one of the hardest boss in the game. You've managed to roll around and wound him time after time, again and again. But you didn't do it unschated. You've only got 20% of your health left. You managed to dodge roll one of his attack and you're ready to get the killer blow and suddenly...
MOUNTAIN DEW! ALL HAIL DORITO POPE!
And Then it goes back to your game and you found that...
YOU DIED
You can put this with the rest of the patents that wont get to see the light of day.
#outrage lol
This is great, how have I never seen this before?
Trying to sell a console for $600 was arguably stupid, too.Lots of companies have lots of patents. Worry about it when it comes to fruition, which it won't because it's stupid.
oh fuck, I didn't even look at the fucking date.Holy zombie thread. I was thinking "isn't this really old?" when I saw the thread title, and yep.
I'm surprised this can even be patented, it is all over F2P games. If this ever happened in a purchased game I would be mad about it.
If I'm understanding that claim right, it was filed in 2006? like ten years ago when the PS3 first came out? Very weird patent, and it would be terrible if it came to actual paid games, but I'm assuming the fact that it hasn't been done in ten years(again, if I'm reading it right), may mean they probably think it wouldn't go over well either.
