PlayStation Home Console shipments have now exceeded 370* million units across PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 since 1994. The milestone will have been hit in the final quarter of FY2014/15, the results of which are due to be released by Sony at the end of this month. Sony's Portable console shipments have now exceeded 90 million units giving the PlayStation family a total of 460 million hardware sales LTD

The below is some data I've had on my PC for a while and thought I'd share, it contains Sony Home console Production/unit shipments from 1994-2014.

Please take a look-

Sony PlayStation 4 Hardware Unit sales (Millions of units)

Sony PlayStation 3 Hardware unit sales (Millions of units)

Sony PlayStation 2 Hardware/Production unit sales (Millions of units)

Sony PlayStation Production unit sales (Millions of units)

Would anyone be able to help with PS1 shipments from 1994-1997?

*Based on Sony's FY2014/15 forecast for PS3/PS4

That number both impresses, and saddens me lol. Amazing how fast mobile phone adoption rate proceeded. Still! Very different needs and markets, so I can rest assured on that :p Good job playstation, I've owned every one of you.

Well Mobile and Console are very different. Not directly comparable.

But I know what you mean.

Am I off the maths or that means 90 millions Ps3 shipped?
Between 86-90 million shipped.

My estimates put it over 87 million as of December 31st 2014.

How many home consoles has Nintendo and MS shipped so far? If someone with latest official data could chime in it would be great.

Such a shame we never got a final update on PS2 shipments :-/ I wonder how high it got. Maybe we'll get final PS3 shipments and then extrapolate.

Do people seriously think PS5 won't be a console?
the success of the PS4 pretty much guaranteed another generation of consoles.. the day all three companies sell at WiiU level consistently is the day any doubt would be legitimate.

Maybe if it wasnt for vr. Hi fidelity, low latency vr will need an easy to use local processing solution. Ps5 is coming.

Otherwise, ps could maaaaybe transition to a game streaming service. And thats a big maybe.

Too early for that. One more gen minimum before that is a viable solution for gamers.

When showed in this context it really put things into perspective.

Nevermind Microsoft who only joined two generations ago, Nintendo was one of the old guards that survived to this day!

I think there will be a PS5. I think that if Project Morpheus becomes a commercial success, the second edition of Project Morpheus will definitely require local compute hardware as well for optimal Virtual Reality gameplay experiences where low latency is of high importance.

I can definitely see PlayStation becoming more and more of a cross-platform brand and distribution service rather than just plastic consoles for under the TV. So mobile, PlayStation consoles and maybe even PC endeavours. They're already more or less doing that with a few SCE-published mobile games and PS Now. I think it's a good strategy as a whole, but I'm not sure about PS Now.

But like Yoshida has said, the brand will likely remain centered around consoles for the foreseeable future, so there'll likely be a PS5. (and if they do make a PS5, hopefully it'll be backwards compatible, because that's a big disadvantage with PS4 and XB1 compared to PC. Consoles need to start building up their catalog from scratch again and discard a rich history of games)

Crazy part is Nintendo had about a 100 million lead when PlayStation started

I worry more about PS Vita successor than PS5 actually.
I think the PS Vita catalog games will last a decade or something at the rate of which I play and complete games at the moment, so I'm not worried. Especially if PS Now comes to Europe. I'm not too interested in game streaming as a whole, but the idea of playing PS3 games in portable format on PS Vita sounds appealing to me.

I would like a spiritual PS Vita successor in the vein of an Xperia + PlayStation branded smartphone with some features dedicated for playing games on it, and ideally with official emulation for PSP, PS Vita, PS1 games and access to the Google Play Store of course.

lol, yeah, that's not happening. I wouldn't be surprised if they just try to push PSNow to their Xperia line instead
That will definitely happen, but I think PS Now is planned to be released eventually on every Android / iOS device.

If it's going to be a staggered release on mobile, it's definitely coming first to Xperias.

I was seriously skeptical before this generation launched, but seeing how the PS4 has done now, I think Sony found a good business and hardware model to work with next gen. They just have to hope AMD is still around making x86 parts by then.

I worry more about PS Vita successor than PS5 actually.
In addition to others' notes, I'm skeptical we'll even get a third version of the Vita, let alone a whole new dedicated handheld.

Ugh what a shame! I really want a new Playstation handheld to come out. Screw you smartphones for killing handheld gaming! :(

I would be absolutely shocked if there is a vita successor.

There is no way in hell Sony continues with another handheld. No fucking way,
As I said, maybe an Xperia + PlayStation branded handset that will replace PlayStation handhelds? I think the mobile gaming market has grown enough significantly the Xperia Play that in the present-day of 2015, there would likely be a sizeable audience for a smartphone tailored for games that such a device could be a moderate success. Likely more so than another PlayStation handheld in the vein of PSP and PS Vita. Because even among enthusiast, 'core' gamers I think there's much more interest in mobile gaming.

It would be great to have such a device that ideally could emulate PSP, PS Vita, PS1 games with an officially supported emulator. And it would have PS Now, PS4 Remote Play, Google Play (so Nintendo games as well! Assuming Nintendo will distribute their mobile games through the Play Store on Android of course).

Crazy how much further ahead sony is than Nintendo considering how much longer Nintendo has been in the run for.

Though I guess it might be reversed if you included both sides portables.

As has been mentioned above, I don't think we'll ever see a dedicated portable console again from Sony.

Portable console shipments for 3DS and Vita only reached 11.2 million units last year where as PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Wii U shipments totalled 34.8 million units. More than 3x as much, it used to be that dedicated handhelds would exceed home console sales, e.g DS, Gameboy etc...

Return of Cell!

Sony and MS must be thinking of the possibility they really do fold though.
Things will get a lot more interesting if Intel opens up their fabs to third parties with high volume (they just do low volume parts like FPGAs now).

I hope one of these days Sony will share the split info for FY 2012/2013 because that's always irritated me

Certainly, once you include portable sales then we see Nintendo Home + Portable shipments at 681 million and Sony Home + Portable shipments at 460 million.

The DS, 3DS, Gameboy and Gameboy Advance on their own exceed 400 million

Thanks!

I hope we get splits too. We can safely say that PS2 must have been lower than 4m and likely was around 2-3m units. Therefore PS3 LTD can be around 87-88m.

But as you know these are all guesses.

Yup, PS1 and PS2 production totalled 29.3 million units. What you may be surprised to know is that for FY2002, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sega sold in more than 42 million home consoles.

Shame because its the best portable console hardware and design wise by far.

Would that be in their best interests?

APU's are a great fit for current consoles to reap the benefits on size and cost reduction factors, with AMD being in a weak position and all to take advantage of. Still, I'd kind of like to see what kind of hybrid monster Sony would have to think up if AMD is out next round.
