Curious wording there Panda, compared to
" Sony did not alter its previous forecast that it will sell 13.5 million PlayStation 4s in fiscal year 2019, which runs from April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020."
I didn't word anything differently. It's a copy and paste of what benji Sales said on twitter.

I know, i don't the follow the guy, but i do get my news from Gematsu which i quote in my post who said Sony wasn't disappointed or changed their sales forecast, which makes sense only a fool doesn't see such a drop in sales coming especially during a generation's twilight year/s.

I don't know why the OP is so negative including Benji guy, this was PlayStation best second year and it is in the final year of its life

Apart from the Switch. This gen is dying for both Xbox and Playstation. We need PS5/XSX ASAP!
Is not like PS5/XSX comes out we gonna get some amazing games from get go, in fact most of the time we get games that are shallow in gameplay and just there to show off the new graphics. I'm gonna buy PS5 at launch or down the line but I honestly waaay more excited for upcoming games coming out on PS4 and Switch more than next gen systems.

Indeed, you'd think it was on lifesupport going by the mood in here. Y'all do realize FY2018 was an absolute monster for them, right? Numbers are down relative to that yet are still amazing.

Oh. Sony is fucking doomed if PS5 is not a huge success. Unlike Microsoft, for Sony the gaming business is much much more important. They HAVE to make money otherwise Sony could actually go bankrupt very easily.
For MS it's not like that, they have so much money, doesn't really matter if they don't make much money with Xbox. They can justify the costs easily and it wouldn't really hurt the company.
Sony on the other hand is doomed. These numbers are really REALLY bad. Way worse than I expected. Wow.

I'd say expected, but they were - by definition - "below expectations."

Very telling, however, that the market is and has been prepared to move on. The sales lifecycle is obviously setting but I'm more intrigued to extrapolate what the data tells us about the size of the purported consumer base for consoles moving forward.

Sarcasm?

Cause the 2nd best year ever only to their previous year does not equal doom.

For actual breakdown, the thread on REE has far more information.

LTD sales are at 108.9m, with 6.1m shipped last quarter. PS4 is tracking ahead of PS2 still.
Software digital ratio went up by 12%, from 37% in 2018 to 49% in 2019.
PS+ Subscribers up to 38.8m.
PSN generated $12.48B in 2019, which dwarfs entire Xbox revenue for 2019 which stands at $10.3B.

I don't why the OP is so negative including Benji guy, this was PlayStation best second year and it is in the final year of its life

Look at who the OP is, that should answer it.

I love how CyberPanda CyberPanda slapped this thread so fast just to concentrate on the bad news only and brushing the facts that PS4 has sold 109m units and had its second best ever year sales wise while yet to get any other significant price drop . 🤣

On topic: very impressive performance, 6.1m in one quarter might be higher than Xbox whole year sales and that without any major price reductions.

yep we are going to get the same games were getting right now for the next 3-4 years + a bunch of remasters ill go out and say people are going to regret buying the ps5 and XSX as soon as the 1st to 2nd month passses

Lets just discuss the figures posted by the OP. His only comment was "New consoles cant come fast enough" which does not mean he is posting doom and gloom. Stahp.

The OP should have done more work putting a better thread for us to discuss. instead of going to Sony's financial posted , he chose to post "opinions" of a twitter account that talks about sales.

Just look a the difference of quality of this thread here and on Era (as much as I hate that place) but Reee OP has done a great job putting the numbers out there for discussion while Currypanda just posted whatever.

Sony's forecasts hasn't been lowered, so the "below expectations" comment is basically Benji being dramatic and not assessing the situation properly. And since Currypanda decided to start his OP with this "opinion" for some reason, the conversation now is about Sony having doom and gloom despite having their 2nd best year saleswise this gen.

You mean 2018 right? chances were slim, but again ps4 sold out quick at 199$. if they dropped price 199$ WW maybe had a chance.
They thought
Shipment this year 2020 will be higher than 2019 because of FF7R, TLOU2, and CCP77.

Next Gen buzz will kill the interest of owning PS4 and XB1.

Should be added to the OP. I agree the OP did a very poor job. PS4 made bank, and it seemed like it was doom and gloom based on a opinion off a guy from twitter.

I see your point but feel free to make your own thread. I really dont get involved in console wars so its hard for me to see the difference with facts and opinions here. I dont think the OP should be blamed for reproducing these tweets, maybe discuss the person behind the tweets then.

PlayStation had the 2nd best year in their entire history and this is the thread you made ? 3rd best quarter ever as well. I really hope you don't make more ps threads as you clearly are only interested in your agenda

Here: all credit goes to ArmGunar from Reee, just trying to save this trainwreck of a thread:

Note: pictures doesn't seem to appear, if someone can fix it and repost this, we can have a discussion

As mentioned in the poll, spending on PS Store include Games & Add-on content (DLC/MTX/etc...) but no Services (as PS+/PS Now)

- 25.7% of Sony total Sales/Revenue (vs 32.9% - Q3 FY2018)

PS4 shipped : 6.1m (vs 8.1m - Q3 FY2018)
PS4 LTD : 108.9m

  • During this quarter, more than 10.20 games have been sold each second worldwide (= 881 000 games sold each day)
  • More than 431 000 digital games have been sold-through each day on average on the PlayStation Store during Q3
    • doesn't include "download only software titles"
  • 103 million players each spent ~ $27.21 on average on the PlayStation Store between Oct-Dec 2019
PS+ Members : 38.8m (up from 36.3m - Q3 FY2018)
  • All-time high number of PS+ subscribers

Even with Q4 not counted, PS4 is still tracked ahead of PS2 for now

Here is below the PS4 software sales since FY2015, including the quarterly physical/digital split from FY2016 onward
(doesn't include "download only software titles" ; no data before FY15 because it was not provided)

Now you can take a look below at the evolution of PS Plus subscribers and Software digital ratio over years

Here is now the Quarterly Physical Software Sales on PS4 since FY2016 (from April 2016 onward)
And the interesting stat : Sony's average gross margin per physical copy sold

For a $60 retail game, publishers have to pay about $7-10 to Sony as a license fee (publisher's gross margin ~ $33)
For its own first-party games, Sony's gross margin will be as high as ~ $40
When Sony's average gross margin is higher than $7-10, that's because it's inflated by the performance of its exclusives
  • Q1 FY16 (Apr-June 2016) : Uncharted 4 release
  • Q4 FY16 (Jan-Mar 2017) : Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Q1 FY18 (Apr-June 2018) : God of War & Detroit
  • Q1 FY19 (Apr-June 2019) : Days Gone
Q2 FY18 (July-Sept 2018) with Spider-Man didn't go higher (despite good performance), probably because of huge sales of annual sport titles (Madden/NBA 2K/FIFA) which lowered Sony's average gross margin

Some stats of PlayStation in 2019 (calendar year) including data of previous years to contextualize
*Sell-in numbers (sold to retailers + digital sales) come from Sony's quarterly reports and don't include "download only software titles"
**Sell-through numbers (sold to customers via retail stores or PS Store) include "download only software titles" (unless otherwise specified)

This is the PlayStation Yearly Revenue & Operating Profit
I added Revenue in USD to give you an idea of what Revenue in JPY mean (therefore if Revenue USD don't follow the same growth than Revenue JPY, it's because of exchange rates)
  • 2019 is the 2nd biggest year ever for PlayStation with over $18.72B in Revenue and $2.35B in Op. Profit

Here is below the PS4 Yearly Hardware & Software Sell-in by Calendar Year (same graph with Sell-through numbers is also available)
  • More than 257 million games have been sold-through in 2019 (including "download only software titles")
    • 704 000 games sold to consumers each day on average (= 8.15 games sold-through each second)
    • 2nd highest yearly software sales (sell-through) for any platform in video game history
  • Over 109 million digital games were sold-through on PS Store in 2019 (doesn't include "download only software titles")

]

With over 240m software sold-in last year, PS4 2019 entered the Top 10 Highest Yearly Software Sales (Sell-in) at #4
Below are the Top 10 and Top 15 Highest Yearly Software Sales :

]

PlayStation Network generated over $12.48B in 2019 thanks to :
  • PlayStation Store ($9.28B) through Games and Add-on content (MTX, DLC, etc...) purchases
  • PS Services ($3.20B) with PS+ and PS Now
2019 is the 2nd highest revenue ever generated by PlayStation Network (#2 for PS Store ; #1 for Services) and during that year :
  • 103 million players each spent ~ $90.14 on average on the PlayStation Store*
  • about 40m PS+/PS Now subscribers spent ~ $6.66/month on average ($79.92/year)**
*calculated by the following formula : "Yearly Total Spending on PS Store" / "MAU at the end of the year"
**calculated by the following formula : "Yearly Network Services Revenue" / "Amount of PS+ & PS Now subscribers at the end of the year"

And to finish, the PS4 Hardware sell-through with a Breakdown by Region, one with raw numbers, the other one in %

New thread guys : (don't post in currypanda Xbox agenda driven thread)

You need to chill 😅

The title of this thread is fine, I'm not sure another one is needed.

CyberPanda CyberPanda just needs to update the OP with further information instead of running with opinions in a tweet from an "analyst" who is focused on the US only with limited data.

I mean he's right. if you wanna bring back neogaf to former glory, this is crucial, especially for a earning report. when i came into this thread i thought PS4 had a terrible quarter.
Imagine having the 2 nd best year ever in history of PS and this shit is the thread someone decided to make . Based on deleted tweets lol cause the original poster understood he fucked up and deleted all the tweets

At least they provide all the other numbers we could ever want though right?

Imagine wanting to hide things so much that you don't even provide hardware numbers.
TBF, Sony combined PSP and PSV numbers together, only Nintendo is man enough to show WiiU figure.

Looks like Benji want to overblown everything with no reason. Sony did really well. Or just Benji is salty because his domestic corp sold way less
