Sony reportedly shifting First Party development focus onto PS5

Sony is apparently having its first-party studios focus on PlayStation 5 game development, but we may not see the fruits of that labor for some time.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad – who has previously reported inside information ahead of official confirmation – took to ResetEra to explain that, "in general, most of the focus for Sony [first party studios] is on PS5 right now.
It is still early to talk about next gen but I imagine we'll hear some whispers come out of GDC."

He added that "PS5 dev kits are out there and I've heard positive things about it."

Sony has already officially confirmed that work's begun on creating a PS5, and several third-party publishers, including Square Enix, Bethesda and Activision are openly working on next-gen games.
In fact, a reported 18% of developers are actively developing for the next console generation, and it's no surprise that Sony's studios would be a part of that.

It seems as though we shouldn't expect much in the way of news this year, however.
Ahmad explains that 2019 will be another successful year for Sony's current console, and that the company still has "a couple of unannounced games (already existing IP) with PS4 in mind".

So... no shit Sherlock? Cancelling PSX 2018 and E3 2019 didn't clue you in already?

I want to be an analyst too. I'd like to get paid for stating the obvious.

Good. Sure no new AAA games are going to get announced for ps4. But its been a great gen of exclusives.

Gotta get those PS4 BC games upgraded baby.
Improved resolutions, filterings, textures, LODs and frame rates.
I want to login in the PS5 and play my PS4 games Sony don't fuck everything up.

The interesting tidbits to me personally is in that GDC file, couldn't be arsed when I read Zhuge's post on another site.
But combined it is news worthy, so read the file and get a better idea what developers are up to and other interesting stuff.

DF made a video about those info cautions.
That's about the 24/32Gb of RAM and 12-16TF GPU's and shit that will bring up the price by x2 +-.
Basically overly enthusiastic leaks/wishlists which from a financial standpoint wouldn't be sell-able.

This article isn't from a Hellpoint dev. So it's probably not true. I'll rather wait for Hellpoint dev to confirm this

But why? Shouldn't Sony be more worried about achieving an active online leadership?

There is a lot of talk about next gen already and it seems like its still a long time until those consoles hit.

I have a feeling we'll be getting a legitimate article from a source like DF soon after GDC with rumored specs.

That's what I expect, once dev do their thing at GDC and Richard or John gets to talk to them they might let go of some devkit info.
But after watching this I kinda expect a 2013 situation but with Ryzen replacing Jaguar (which is great on the CPU side of things).

If Sony is shifting team to ps5 now we are probably looking at 2021 to 2022 giving games 2 to 3 year development cycle for AAA games.

Nov 2012 was when Devs got PS4 Dev kits console came out a year later

PS5 should be coming late 2019/early 2020 with some of these games coming a bit later

If the PS4 keeps selling well into 2020, why not wait until 1H 2021 for release?

I would rather see PS4 Pro Slim with price cut this year and have a PS5 come out later with a huge launch library of exclusives. This would also allow Sony to make the PS5 more powerful with component costs being cheaper.

I can't wait to see what the ps5 is. IMO they can't just create a 'more powerful!' system and sell it. An upgrade to the ps4 pro can't possibly be enough (few care about the xbox one X afterall) and no one is going to buy a VR machine. I'm ready to be impressed though.. somehow..

This is so true. I own every single Playstation console but if they pull a please understand and have no backwards compatibility I'm not buying this shit.

Sounds about right. A game like Knack 3 takes time.
Haha Japan studio has been silent for a while so we know what's up now :p

What's the situation with PS4 does it have BC like XBox (systematically enhanced) or anything that's on par or is that something we'll see with PS5?
Don't have any system, so don't know jackshit about what system got what, only tidbits I pick up.

It doesn't. It could probably have decent BC to PS2/PS1 via software emulation - whether a market exists for that or not, I cannot say.

But (short of having dedicated hardware for it) it doesn't support BC to PS3. There's a perfectly good reason for that. Check out RPCS3 - and then, check out the system requirements for it. The Cell was/is an odd beast - whether it was the right call for a game console (IMHO it was not), getting games to run at even 30fps-ish requires some serious generic PC hardware. Because it's just so different. If there's a lesson to be learned here, it's don't give your engineers too much acid.

(and for the record, I quite like the Cell, in that it's so alien - it doesn't mean it's practical or preferable for the vast majority of tasks)

Going forward though, both the next Playstation and Xbox will by all accounts go with AMD APUs, so BC should be pretty much a no-brainer.

Shocking news ! the moment Sony pulled out of E3 2019 it was obvious that every studio than finished PS4 title has been moved to work for PS5.

Im going to laugh my ass off if there isn't any PS4 Support for those games

Why? If a game is designed to take advantage of new hardware, why would you be for it being held back? Sony already has publicly known first party content from now until - 2020 for the PS4.

If that is the case, then when do you expect they will formally announce the PS5? They've already stated they're skipping E3 this year.

I want to stab my ear holes when I hear Richard speak.

donald trump will have been out of office for a long time when PS5 launches. btw he leaves office in 2020.

PS5 is not going to launch any time soon :(

Haha. I'd say with the ridiculousness of the left on display, Trump retaining office is more likely than backward compatibility on the PS5.

My opinion. Consoles will follow a shorter cycle 5-6 years with a mid cycle refresh. This could even be shorter.

Consoles always had a 4 to 5 year cycle, the outlier was gen 7 with the 360/PS3 due to the economy and where tech was at the time.

This one seems to be about 6 or 7 years due to waiting on tech/fabbing. Wow, 6 years already. Feels like yesterday I lurked for over a year and registered in the beginning of this gen.

The mid-gen refresh seemed to be due to them knowing it would be another slightly longer gen (due to the fab roadmaps). I'm much more okay with it this go round perosnally, compared to the last.

Didn't realize that. With that in mind, I feel like we can expect the PS5 on November of this year.
