The PS2 didn't have any 3D games though did it?

So let me get this straight. Sony, who continues to lose money hand over fist as a corporation, spends serious R&D and development money to develop something completely worthless to the vast majority of consumers.

Makes perfect sense.

It's pretty clear they are going to ride this 3D train straight to hell despite the fact that movie goers and home entertainment consumers have soundly rejected 3D.

If I was a Sony shareholder I would be livid right now.

Who said it's just for the consumer market?

My brother used to have one of these. I hooked it up and played some Metro Prime and felt super-sick after about 5 minutes. Was a cheap crappy model from some no-name company though so maybe this Sony thing has a bit more substance.

Hopefully we can get some hands on impressions soon? The price isn't that high if you ask me, I'll probably buy one if you don't get a headache.

3d and head mounted. I will buy this. I'm actually a huge lover of 3d. Especially playing games in 3d. Sure I can only play at one hour intervals but it's not like I'm a kid anymore. I don't actually have time to play more than an hour or so at a time. It adds a lot to the gameplay in my opinion.

But shouldn't you judge it as 720p across a .7inch screen?
why would you ignore the pixel count? at the end of the day, you're being asked to look at and enjoy a 750" virtual screen that appears to sit 65 feet away. It's perfectly reasonable to ask what the experience is like at that resolution given the size and distance.

Yeah, it's cool, but I don't see myself using something that alienates me from my surroundings.
I've always thought that if you were buying one of these and the purpose wasn't almost exclusively for travel, you are ForeverAlone.

I am not saying you are wrong or whatever, but try it out if you ever get a chance someday, I'm sure the experience is much different than watching a 720p video source like a 2D monitor

Uh? Why would you use them only for travel? Aren't they advertised as a mean to watch movies as in a giant 3D screen, or using them for gaming?
Also, there could be 2-3 people in the same room using them, like in that picture...

I remember those back in Disney World almost 20 years ago. Flew around on Alladin's carpet. Was a pretty sweet experience back then, I'm sure it's impressive nowadays.

Looks like the kind of virtual reality headset games i played back in the late 90s.

Also, what about people using glasses like me? A big "Sucks to be you"?

I was actually wondering this. I wear glasses for distance, but can see fine up close. Theoretically, I should be able to use this without my glasses (I also wear contacts) because the image is actually inches from my face, right?

Or, they serve as a second TV for couples... I just don't see this logic at all. I want one because my gf has no interest in a 3DTV. I could use these while she watches TV and we could both be on the couch together.

Yes, this set is for home. Most of these kinds of items are sold as travel devices and connected to a portable video player of some sort.

Also, lol @ you suggesting what you see in that picture is something that happens in real life. I can't imagine many scenarios where I'd rather slap this thing on (headphone quality is another huge question mark) than simply flip on my bigass HDTV. Especially not if other people you know are around. It *completely* removes you from the social environment. Who does that?

I can see it begin cool for idunno...massage parlors or something where people will be in the same room but not associated with each other. Otherwise...lol @ that picture.

I expect it to be like watching 720p on a projector. It's fine, but I don't expect it to be as sharp as my HDTV.

that's cool. I just don't see it as practical because it isolates all your relevant senses from everyone else in your house. I can't see the wifey happy with that...but do you. I'm sure it'll be fun...

...for you.

I just want glasses with a HUD

How close to are we to glasses that grab a face, search my contacts, and display the name

I suck at names, the future can't come here quick enough

WTF are you talking about? Why would my gf be unhappy with me spending time that would usually be spent in separate rooms being more easily accessible for conversation? Most couples don't spend every waking second with eachother. Far from it.

i'd buy one for 500.

if bundled with uncharted 3.

Hari Seldon said:
I'd take that in my PS4.
even better. if these things got cheap enough, they could bundle 2 w/ every ps4.

i'd be cool with that.

Duh, I'm not suggesting that... it's a comic and it's made for laughs, to exaggerate a rather boring alternative where one is at home, with or without other people, and won't hear or see what's happening around him.

It would be 100x cool if it had detachable headphones...

HD OLED Head Mounted Display "Personal 3D Viewer"「HMZ-T1」

Sony Global - News Releases - Introducing World's First*1 3D Compatible Head Mounted Display Equipped With High Definition OLED Panel
http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201108/11-097E/index.html

Seeing these translated and localized video and press release from Sony Global site, something that normally doesn't happens for their products exclusive to determined regions, it is very plausible this product will be commercialized worldwide.

Man, I can't believe they still research and manufacture these personal home theater glasses. I've always been curious of the visual fidelity and whether it accurately represents the experience of a giant screen though.

As has been said, it's like the 90s all over again. People didn't want these then, people aren't going to blow $800 on one now. And this setup isn't even portable.

But I'm not mad at them at all for doing it. Hopefully the tech can be translated to something that can help them actually make money.

I'm honestly thinking i'd buy one for my dorm in the military. No space for a huge tv, and headphones meaning it wouldn't bug a room mate.

That's "Dr." dofry to you.
I will test these out if they are on store shelves on 11th of November. And if they are good, I will buy them. Of course expect a review for GAF either way.

Edit: Impressions from Gizmodo (yeah, I know, but because of this, I am hopeful)
Personal TVs are uniformly dorky. I've tried several, and all—I mean all of them—are the kind of horrible experience that makes you think the future is a very asinine place. To date, other than watching hard core pornography on an airplane, I've not yet seen a compelling use case for wearable televisions. And then I tried on the HMZ-T1.

Not only did this sell me on the concept of wearable TV, it was one of my better experiences with 3DTV which I've likewise been skeptical of

This really is the beginning of something huge. I've always imagined in my mind that we'll eventually have sunglasses you can watch TV on that give you a movie theater sized screen... just regular sunglasses that cover the peripheral vision as well, like a pair of stylish Oakley's. This visor is the first step. The first iteration of new tech like this is always big and bulky. Look at Zach Morris' cell phone from Saved by the Bell and look at phones today. We are in the midst of something incredible.

Sounds like japan is getting it first. But looking forward to that review...

That's not a problem as I will be there anyway. Maybe some Sony center in Japan has these for display even now. I remember Tokyo at least having some Sony demo building of some sorts.

Well I'll be looking out for it. Especially if you can try it out on ps3 titles.

This is most likely going to have by far better quality of 3D picture compared to any 3DTV or movie theater. That's where its strength is. I imagine it will be like a huge 3D OLED screen with incredibly vibrant colors and no color dimming associated with typical 3DTV glasses. Personally, I'd rather buy this than the 3D TV in their current incarnations. I know I'd have to use it at night when everyone else is asleep, because otherwise it'd be stupid as you remarked, but I'd be fine using it every once in a while under those conditions. I imagine playing something like a Wipeout or Superstardust in 3D using this could be mindblowing.

Then again it could suck. I'll know when I try it, but it is very intriguing for that reason alone.
