Sony, we need unlimited online save storage

Outside the free* games you get PSN+ and the PSN is a joke. It's down several times a month, games like COD don't even use dedicated servers, we have debacles like Driveclub still not working, PSN gets DDOS attacks that bring the PSN to its knees, still no automatically trophy syncing and shit like this cloud storage having a petty limit.

* = Not really free.

Driveclub issues have nothing to do with PSN, let alone ps+. The problem is with Driveclub.

DDOS attacks can happen to any network.

Not to mention you're making the issues sound way bigger than they actually are. I game online all the time and pretty much have never had issues. As long as I get online before maintenance, I can even game during that.

Dropbox syncing or the like seems like it'll never happen for security reasons. But 1GB is pathetic, especially given that every file is at least 11MB and many games have multiple. Should be unlimited. As far as I know there's no way to check how much space you're actually using either which is painful.

And in the meantime we definitely need better options for managing saves. Unless I'm missing something you currently have to upload/download/copy saves one game at a time. If we could backup/restore all saves to/from USB with one click the inadequate cloud save would be less crippling.

I'm particularly concerned since my PS4 has had a corrupted hard drive 3 times. Cloud save saved me those times. But since then I've gone well past the 1GB limited so if it happens again there will be real data loss.

Though most of the game's in the main post includes different types of saves, which add to the..bloated size.

For example, LBP3 includes 15MB of the adventure. So, you can upload only that just in case.

Plus at least there's USB too. In the end, no need for unlimited but maybe a bigger size. 5GB? At the moment is 1GB per main PlayStation.

Should be telling that to Steam.

"Back up Witcher 2 save files to Steam Cloud."
"Not enough space. Upload canceled."

Seriously.
We need more cloud storage, or allowing us to download files from our SEN account onto the computer so we can use Google/Dropbox.

I think on PS4 it is free but on PS3 it is tied to PS+.

Nope - tied to PS+

Also one of the few features that doesn't get given to other users sharing a primary console - so my kids don't get any online storage even though I'm a PS+ subscriber

If you are a PS+ subscriber, you get 1GB of online storage for your save games. Great, right? Wrong.

On the PS4, the minimum size of a save game appears to be 10MB, and many are much larger.
- littlebigplanet 3 is 500MB on its own - that's half your storage gone
- my Driveclub save is 115MB
- FIFA14 was 75MB.

I have already run out of available online storage space and so new games will no longer auto backup saves. Because PS4 does this in the background you really have no idea whether it is working or not without manually checking. The whole point of auto uploading is that it happens quietly in the background and you want reassurance that your saves are backed up.

Sony need to improve this and offer us 'unlimited' online storage. Realistically this won't actually be unlimited, it will vary from user to user based on how many games you have bought, and how big each save game is.

This seems reasonable to me because we aren't in control of how big save games are - that is the developers. And we only need more space because we are buying more games - each of which is making money for Sony.

hey mrklaw

did you happen to have a fuckton of previous LittleBigPlanet DLC? is that why it's 500 MB?

I have a lot of games and I haven't run into the saved game cloud limit yet so I wonder if that one in particular is a bit of an outlier.

I just ran into this problem too. I kept getting Evil Within upload errors on my notifications and thought my network was having problems uploading. Then I discovered I hit the cap, which is crazy cause when it was just PS3 I was never even close.

Just came across this myself last night. I had to delete some stuff because my Far Cry 4 save kept failing.

With that said, it seemed to me that some games use 20 MB, as it is one save file and one configuration file, but I swore any games that were over 20 MB were because it was a game that let you do multiple saves no? So in that case I just manually deleted the save files I no longer needed.

For example, my largest game was Sniper Elite 3 at 110 MB. I had 10 save files total and one Profile/Configuration file. Once I deleted 9 of my save files, it was only 20 MB.

My point being is I would be really surprised if that 500 MB on save files for LBP was just 1 or 2 files.

With that said, sure, unlimited anything is preferred.

Evil Within was one of my larger ones too, since it lets you create multiple saves.

You can do a 'select all' when deleting or copying. I don't think they tell you how much you are using - it tells you the size of each file but I was adding up in my head as there is no total.

I agree that 1GB isn't enough on PS4. I'm constantly managing the space and deleting files to get my currently played games to upload.

And holy shit at the LBP3 file size!

But don't we get 1GB per Sony console (Vita, PS3 & PS4)? Or is 1GB shared across all consoles?

Always having issues with this on the PS4 but I'm yet to have any issues at all on the other two consoles. Would much prefer to have a central shared memory bank between the three systems as Vita & PS3 game saves are often tiny in comparison so a 3GB shared bank makes far more sense to me than having 1GB for each system.

That's kind of a dumb reason not to buy a game, but OK.

Can you turn off save uploading for a single game? I would consider it then.

My upload bandwidth is at a premium, as is my bandwidth cap. I don't want to take a 500MB hit to my cap every day I play the game.

Not to mention axing half of my online storage.

If Sony are too damn cheap to expand online storage for its users, they should really give us the option to backup to third party cloud services like Google Drive and Dropbox. 1GB is laughable in 2014.

Yep, that is the real problem here. 500mb is insane.

More importantly they should not limit the space per account, but per account/game.
Currently they make it worse the more games you play.
Having 100 to 200mb per game would be great. I don't want my important old saves overitten by some not so great new Game that I might be playing, just because i didn't realize it will take so much space.

I know you can do a "select all" to select all files for a particular game. But I was sure you couldn't "select all" or even multi-select games. Or was that something added with 2.0 that I've failed to notice?

On my PS4.

LBP3 save file is 15MB, the profile is 536MB
Driveclub save file is 10.49MB, Ghost data is 105MB

2K games are huge save files though.

Sorry, I shouldn't have made a statement like that without having more information. That is a shitty situation, I guess I'm blessed with never having to worry about bandwidth or caps.

And to be honest I don't know if you can turn off uploads for individual games, I know on PS3 is used to prompt you per game if you wanted to turn it on but I don't ever recall seeing that on PS4. Seems like it would be a good feature to include.

You can, it's just sort of hidden in comparison to how it works on PS3.

System > Application Saved Data Management > Saved Data in System Storage > Upload to Online Storage > find the game > Auto-Upload > Off

Hmm, so my ps4 uploaded 15 mb for LBP so I wonder if it is smart enough to back up just the save if extra data is too big?

So is there a notification now or not? Last time I ran out of space I only found out because all my uploads started failing.

I don't know, mine hasn't uploaded the profile or ghosts on it's own. I uploaded the LBP3 profile because I was worried about corruption and didn't have a USB drive sitting right next to me.

There HAS to be something broken on LBP3. Can someone explain to me exactly what that game is saving to warrant 500MB of space?

ran in to this a couple weeks ago. I didn't realize there even was a cap. Needless to say now I'm trying to decide what I need and what I don't and what I can risk being local and what I can't.

Why have game saves gotten so big? I get why games themselves use much more space with stuff like more detailed textures, but I'm having trouble understanding how that translates into huge game saves.
Same, it's a mystery.
Something's wrong with PS4 save file sizes on a fundamental level, that's for sure.
No one can tell me a FIFA save actually contains 70MB of relevant data.

If they're sparse files they shouldn't take up all that space in online storage. At least compress them.

The size it takes up in storage isn't the same as what it takes up on your disk. A 5MB file on the PS4 ends up at something like a 30MB file in the cloud. It's bugged as Fuck.

Curious. Does the Xbox have online save storage still? I remember it on the 360. But I don't think I've ever clicked a menu telling games to save in the cloud on Xbone. If so, does that have a limit?

I think it saves it in the cloud automatically and it's unlimited. It's handled very well from what I can tell.
